A PwerPint presentatin was prvided, which highlighted sme f the prgrams and achievements thrughut the first year f Streetrich Hip Hp Sciety (Streetrich) and the Ryal Canadian Theatre Cmpany (RCTC). Mattias Bn prvided a shrt vide t demnstrate sme f the grwing talent develped thrugh Streetrich. Cmments were as fllws: Having a physical space has becme an imprtant additin fr Hip Hp culture in Surrey and thrughut the Lwer Mainland; cnnecting peple thrugh the Hip Hp arts and prviding a platfrm fr yuth and peple f all backgrunds t develp their creative ptential thrugh the artistic elements f Hip Hp culture. With a vast netwrk f prfessinals, Streetrich is able t ffer a variety f affrdable prgrams and drp-in classes n a weekly basis as well as wrkshp ptins t suit the needs f the cmmunity. Affrdable drp-in breakdance and DJ lessns are available n Wednesday evenings ($3.00 fr 3 hurs), prviding individuals with the pprtunity t try their interest first. This is especially beneficial fr thse wh have an interest in becming a DJ as they have access t the equipment befre purchasing their wn equipment. In additin t the varius intrductry drp-in classes, prgrams and wrkshp ptins available include: Spken Wrd, Rap and Sngwriting: A high energy, interactive apprach fr explring creative writing, petry and the technical aspects f "hw t rap". Cmbining elements f basic music thery and rhyme, it is designed fr peple at any skill level t have fun imprvising with wrds. Breakdance, Lcking and Ppping: Teaching the fundamentals and histry f breakdancing; designed t make peple cmfrtable mving t music, and learning hw t cypher. A typical class will have 8-10 students wh cme frm all ver the Lwer Mainland and Fraser Valley. Aersl Arts: "Legal graffiti" participants learn t develp technical hand styles, typgraphy and create murals; bringing visual arts frm the street t the classrm, engaging in discussins arund traditinal and mdern art. Hip Hp Histry and Culture: This wrkshp explres the rigins and rts f Hip Hp culture, tracing back a variety f cultural influences and struggles, t its beginnings in the Brnx, New Yrk City. The aim is t share this knwledge, reclaiming the fundamental values f peace, lve, unity and having fun. With the increased ppularity f DJ skills, ne n ne classes are als available fr thse already pursuing that interest. B. McMurray jined the meeting at 2:47 pm. With the aim t have prgrams accessible fr everyne, the fees are kept affrdable at $15.00 fr 1.5 hur classes with the majrity f the fee paid t the instructr(s); classes are currently limited t 8-10 students. Whenever pssible, lcal and internatinal artists (when in twn) have cme t the studi t supprt new talent and ffer a class, drawing interest and participants frm Vancuver t Chilliwack; always very well attended. Participatin in cmmunity and special events prvides an pprtunity fr artists t shwcase their talent and gain expsure as well as inspire yuth t tap int their artistic abilities. These pprtunities can als prvide the netwrking needed t gain recgnitin and have resulted in paid gigs fr many perfrmers, including DJ services fr the City f Surrey. A shwcase cmpetitin between tw internatinally recgnized breakdance crews was held at the studi with verwhelming interest and attendance. Wrking with a lcal 'fun band', a grup f 16 year-0ld yuth that practice clse t the studi, has resulted in a great cllabratin t shwcase talent and supprt events. Anther pprtunity als includes participatin in the upcming Open Huse at Chuck Bailey Recreatin Centre n June 9, Majrity f participants range in age frm years. Lking int setting up a 'buddy system' (given the lcatin), t make the studi mre accessible fr yunger participants (8-10 years). Lking t the future, Streetrich has hired a cnsultant t assist in develping utreach criteria t create a strnger team and ffer mre levels f prgrams as interest and talent cntinues t grw. On behalf f the RCTC, Ellie King expressed sincere appreciatin fr the dedicated studi and shp space, which has been a 'game changer' in prviding the RCTC an pprtunity t grw, develp prgrams and cnnect with the cmmunity. Additinal cmments were as fllws: The RCTC mandate is t: Prvide a nn-discriminatry, safe, respectful, creative envirnment fr theatre artists at all stages f their develpment; Keep ticket prices affrdable, making live theatre accessible fr all (tickets als given t rganizatins, particularly thse invlved with children and yuth); Offer free mentrship t cmmunity members f all ages, backgrunds and cultures with a special emphasis n yuth; Present prfessinal and semi-prfessinal theatre; Create a new, riginal wrk annually; Make careful prgramming chices and keep high prductin values; Attract new theatre gers as well as prviding fr the mre experienced patrn; Be gd members f the cmmunity, giving back, and cllabrating with ther rganizatins. Except fr mentrship students, artists are paid fr the wrk they d as a mark f respect. The first event t take place in the new RCTC hme was a prfessinally-led, free f charge wrkshp in March Spnsred by Clverdale Paint, a full day was spent n scenic art, and received a strng respnse and interest frm a wide age range f participants. 'The Hund f the Baskervilles' was the first prductin t be develped in the City Parkway Studi and Shp, including prductin develpment, set building/painting and rehearsals. It was a fully prfessinal shw and first in the 2017/2018 Series. 4 Culture Develpment Advisry Cmmittee Minutes April 17, 2018 Having the fully functinal shp and space t put up scenery fr the cast t rehearse has immeasurable benefits, particularly as when wrking with yunger peple wh are new t theatre. A genuine British Pant is prduced every year as part f the free RCTC Yuth Mentrship Prgramme, which runs frm September thrugh January. Sinbad, the Pirates and the Dinsaur was presented at the Surrey Arts Centre in December The mentrship prgram expses students t all aspects f prductin (cstume making, scenery cnstructin and n-stage perfrmance) prviding a brad range f benefits. In additin t teaching gd theatrical practice, literal skills, acting, dancing and singing, the prgram engages yuth, increasing their creative develpment and instilling a sense f cnnectin and cmmunity. Partnerships/cmmunity utreach: Currently in discussins t partner with an imprv cmpany in Vancuver. Hping t rll ut bth drp-in and bked classes fr imprv fr all ages beginning in May, with yuth taking pririty. Als talking with Simn Fraser University t bring dance pprtunities int the studi. T supprt summer camps there will be tw summer intern students cming n bard in July. Summer camps will be ffered fr tw age grups: 8 12 years and years. Camp attendees will create their wn theatre prductin and present at the end f the curse. Financial supprt is being sught in rder t ffer the camps free f charge r at a lw cst. T supprt emerging artists, RCTC is inviting the cmmunity fr submissins fr the 'One Act Play Festival' (either riginal r previusly prduced), which will run fr three Saturdays including a Francphne evening. Free t the cmmunity, RCTC will prvide the space, technical and frnt f huse supprt, marketing supprt and if wanted, dramaturgy. Next fr RCTC: 2018/2019 seasn with three prductins: Arsenic and Old Lace (Octber); Hansel, Gretel and the Strlling Players (December); and A Bedfull f Freigners (March 2019); Yuth Theatre Cmpany, launching September 2018; free/lw cst prgram led by a Bachelr f Perfrming Arts emerging artist. Weekly sessins fr ages years, culminating in a public perfrmance f the student s wrk in the Studi; and New prgramming pprtunities: With rehearsals fr the 2018/2019 seasn t take place n Saturdays and Sundays, the remainder f the week is available fr ther prgramming. C. Thrnley jined the meeting at 3:15 pm and the Cmmittee attained qurum. 2. Kent Gallie, Perfrming Arts Manager, and Mary Rukavina, Special Events and Filming Manager Kent Gallie, Perfrming Arts Manager, and Mary Rukavina, Special Events and Filming Manager, prvided a presentatin n Surrey Special Events A PwerPint presentatin, prviding an verview f City signature events, including marketing and spnsrship, was prvided. Mary Rukavina prvided the fllwing cmments: The City f Surrey has taken the initiative t prduce quality events that are ffered free f charge. With the assistance f large crprate partners and generus media spnsrs, the City puts n five majr signature events each year: 1. Party fr the Planet: On April 14th the City's Earth Day celebratin celebrated its 8th year. Chief Harley Chapel prvided a welcme during the pening ceremny, in additin t the Semiahm First Natins children's perfrmance. The City welcmed ver 10,000 participants thrughut the day (10 am 6 pm) at Civic Plaza. Outdr perfrmances and activities were enjyed. 2. Canada Day: Surrey Canada Day is ne f the cuntry s largest Canada Day celebratins and the largest in Western Canada. Hsted at the Bill Reid Millennium Amphitheatre in Clverdale frm 10:00 am 10:30 pm, the full day f festivities has smething fr everyne. The evening ends with a spectacular firewrks display. 3. Fusin Festival: On July 21st and 22nd, frm 11 am 10 pm each day, the City will be celebrating the 11th Surrey Fusin Festival at Hlland Park. Grwing frm ne stage and 22 pavilins in 2008, there will be six stages f internatinal, natinal and lcal perfrmers and 50 cultural pavilins (the heartbeat f the festival). 100,000 attendees are anticipated ver the tw days t experience the entire wrld with representatin frm every cntinent. A big part f fusin festival is the fd, prviding an amazing culinary experience. 4. Tree Lighting Festival: One f the last signature events f the year is the ever ppular Surrey Tree Lighting Festival, held at City Hall. This year the event takes place n Nvember 24th with the anticipated attendance f 20,000 thrughut the day (12:00 pm 7:00 pm). Kent Gallie presented n the fifth majr signature event, as fllws: 5. Surrey Internatinal Children's Festival, May 24 26, 2018: The 14th annual Surrey Internatinal Children s Festival will include perfrmances frm the Netherlands, U.K., Quebec and B.C. Children will be able t take part in mre than 25 different art making activities n site, all lead by prfessinal artists and educatrs, and will als learn mre abut their heritage, lcal French and Indigenus cultures and take in free perfrmances n the Cmmunity Spirit Stage. There will be a daily Traditinal Welcme t the Territry and acknwledgements at all shws. Germaine Langan, a lcal Indigenus event planner, is crdinating the Indigenus elements f the Festival. The Festival cntinues t run prgramming thrughut the year, including: Cirque Surrey, a free circus mentrship prgram fr less advantaged yuth ages years; runs January t May. Break it Dwn, a 17-week yuth mentrship prgram fr underserved yuth in Newtn that cnnects yuth t their cmmunity thrugh electrnic music and hip hp dance. Identity Creatin Curtyard, will take place during the Festival at Surrey Art Centre curtyard. Indigenus prgram facilitatr, Germaine Langan, will present wrkshps n family histries and rigins. Make a Memry spnsrship prgram, educatinal and ticketaccess prgram. Gives students frm under-served schls the pprtunity t experience live perfrming arts. In 2017, principle prgram spnsr TD, alng with 19 ther Surrey-based small businesses, prvided 1,600 tickets, that sent ver 50 classes t the Festival. The Children's Festival hsts the largest vlunteer prgram fr the City. In 2017, ver 325 vlunteers (majrity 14 t 19 years) cntributed ver 3,100 hurs. Over the past number f years the Festival has increased the number f yuth mentrship and grup vlunteering pprtunities. Nw in its 14th year, yuth that attended the Festival as children are cming back t vlunteer as art activity leaders, giving back t the cmmunity.
