As the nation s first Faculty of Music in a public institution, the faculty is on a path that will see it emerge as a strong force in music in higher education. The faculty is devoted to the advancement of music and scholarship in Malaysia through academic excellence and high performance standards. Our mission is to prepare students to become professional musicians and music educators in a holistic manner through creative teaching-learning strategies and research. We strive to create a nurturing and supportive environment while challenging students to develop their talents to the fullest. With a student population of over 530 students, the relatively small size of the faculty provides a conducive and productive atmosphere for ensuring individual attention for students in their music studies. We place an importance in maintaining a balanced emphasis on both performance and scholarship while presenting students with the training necessary to excel within their chosen field. The UiTM Faculty of Music is thrilled to continue its 2015 Music Series with exciting events in the last quarter of the year including Classical Guitar masterclasses, lessons, workshops and concert with Andrew Zohn (USA), The International Cak Lempong & Gamelan Festival, Piano masterclass & recital by Marcella Fiorillo (Argentina), Composer Dr. Michael Smetanin's (Australia) masterclasses, open rehearsals, seminar & concert as well as the 5th UiTM-klpac Malaysian Composers Concert Series, and the Borealis Brass (USA) workshops, masterclass & concerts. We sincerely hope that you can join us in these events Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ramona Mohd Tahir Dean UiTM Faculty of Music Calendar of Events 1

Guide to composing for percussion instruments by Maximilian Riefer Despite their age-old existence and appearances in all cultures and civilizations all around the globe, the percussion instrument s role in contemporary classical music is relatively young compared to say string or wind instruments. Their strengths the sheer variety of instruments, sounds, and tone colours, their links to diverse cultures, and the ability to interpret their base functions - have attracted many contemporary composers. At the same time, inadequate thought processes and research or weakly defined objectives lead to banal superficiality and may result in what composer Pierre Boulez describes as an exotic primitive display, creating merely the surprises and delights of a walk in a crowded bazaar. How can composers avoid falling into that trap? How do you notate non-pitched music? How to choose from this endlessly seeming choice of percussion instruments? Percussionist Max Riefer, Chair of Percussion Studies and Creative Scholar at the UiTM Faculty of Music will present examples, issues and work on their solutions. Date : September 23rd, 2015 Venue : Orchestra Hall, Faculty of Music UiTM Time : 10.30am 12.30pm For further information, please contact Mohd Adam Masumi at 019-5536541 or email: adammasumi@gmail.com 9
