1 Happy New Year!!! UiTM Faculty of Music Music Series January 2017 As the nation s first Faculty of Music in a public institution, the faculty is on a path that will see it emerge as a strong force in music in higher education. The faculty is devoted to the advancement of music and scholarship in Malaysia through academic excellence and high performance standards. Our mission is to prepare students to become professional musicians and music educators in a holistic manner through creative teaching-learning strategies and research. We strive to create a nurturing and supportive environment while challenging students to develop their talents to the fullest. With a student population of over 500 students, the relatively small size of the faculty provides a conducive and productive atmosphere for ensuring individual attention for students in their music studies. We place an importance in maintaining a balanced emphasis on both performance and scholarship while presenting students with the training necessary to excel within their chosen field. The UiTM Facutly of Music is thrilled to continue its 2017 Music Series which promises to be just as full and exciting as previous years. Highlights of this year s exciting events include the Asia Pacific Symposium for Music Education Research (APSMER 2017) in UNESCO World Heritage site, Melaka; Composition workshop and piano masterclass by Maestro Gilbert de Greeve (Belgium); Baroque Transcription for Marimba and violin masterclass by Saori Nakazawa (Japan); workshop and Joint Concert by the UiTM Percussion Ensemble and the Mannheimer Schlagwerk (Germany); and the 8 th UiTM-klpac Malaysian Composer Concerts Series We sincerely hope that you can join us in some if not all of these events! Have a wonderful 2017 and please support UiTM Faculty of Music! Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ramona Mohd Tahir, Dean 1
2 Composition Portfolio Showcase EXIT STAGE LEFT EXIT STAGE LEFT is the title of this semester s composition portfolio showcase. The showcase is the culminating activity of the Bachelor in Music Composition (Hons) program where graduating students showcase a final portfolio of their compositions through a concert. Besides serving as a platform for the final assessment of the students compositions, the showcase also provides the students with the opportunity to present their works of creative ideas and diverse styles/genres of music in front of a live audience. Each student selects his or her best compositions composed throughout his/her studies and premiers them live during the showcase. This year s showcase will begin with the performance of the students orchestral works which will be conducted by Mr. Michael Maximillian Riefer followed by each student presenting three (3) other works consisting of original works for ensemble/choir, experimental and a work with at least one traditional instrument. All are welcome to attend! Details of the showcase are as follows: Date : January 7, 2017 Venue : UiTM Faculty of Music Orchestra Hall, INTEC Campus Section 17, Shah Alam. Time : am 4.00 pm For further information, please contact Mr. Adam Masumi at or adam9345@salam.uitm.edu.my 2

The aim of the Camp is to create a forum for intercultural exchange in the fields of music, dance and drama. The focus for GLOMUS 2017 will be on inclusion, community outreach and transcultural collaboration. Main activities include small and large group sessions, regional presentations, leadership forum and a new concept Oficina. 4 "SPACE GAMBUS EXPERIMENT" Talk and Performance by Kamal Sabran Space Gambus Experiment (SGE) is an open-source musical project and performing group led by Mr. Kamal Sabran, an alumni of UiTM Faculty of Music. Their music typically centers around the gambus (short-necked lute), whereby its unique sound and strong cultural and historical significance becomes a catalyst for experimental sound-making. SGE has produced three full-length albums and worked on two soundtracks for local films namely, "Jagat" and "Lebuhraya Ke Neraka". Join us to hear Mr. Kamal Sabran share his ideas and inspiration on his music-making journey and watch his demonstration and performance on the gambus.
