On Sunday, April 17, 2016 at 3:00pm, we will present Court and Country, our annual (mostly) Baroque program. The program includes great chamber works and arias by Bach, Corelli, Handel, Vivaldi, Rameau, and Purcell that emerged under differing circumstances such as court patronage, public performance, and integration of both high-brow and low-brow musical styles. The artists include Allegra De Vita, mezzo-soprano making her DSE debut, and DSE core artists Mimi Stillman, flute, Yiying Julia Li, violin, Nathan Vickery, cello, and guest artist Matthew Glandorf, harpsichord. Allegra De Vita, a resident artist at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia, has just joined the roster of the Washington National Opera Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program. Dolce Suono Ensemble formed a partnership with the program at the invitation of Plácido Domingo in 2009. The DSE core artists on the program are all graduates of the Curtis Institute of Music. They include internationally acclaimed soloist and DSE founder and Artistic Director Mimi Stillman, flutist; Yiying Julia Li, a member of the first violin section of The Philadelphia Orchestra; and cellist Nathan Vickery is a member of the New York Philharmonic. This is the third season of DSE s Knight Arts Challenge award-winning project Música en tus Manos, and the second season of The Americas Project, also made possible by grants from the William Penn Foundation and National Endowment for the Arts. Gabriel Globus-Hoenich, DSE percussionist, serves as co-curator alongside Artistic Director and flutist Mimi Stillman, as he creates new arrangements of Latin American popular music from Mexico, Brazil, and Cuba. This 2015-2016 season, our co-curators have included Charles Abramovic, Roberto Díaz, and Jennifer Higdon, as part of a season-long focus on collaborative programming. The ensemble presents critically acclaimed chamber music concerts on its home series in Philadelphia, performs on tour, commissions important new works, makes recordings, and engages in community engagement partnerships. Dolce Suono Ensemble was Chamber Music America s featured American Ensemble and has been highly praised by The New York Times as an adventurous ensemble. Dolce Suono Ensemble presents dynamic and innovative programming of repertoire that spans Baroque to new music. Its curatorial vision sets the music in its broadest cultural context with programs built organically on a theme, for example, the celebrated Mahler 100 - Schoenberg 60, Debussy in Our Midst: A Celebration of the 150 th Anniversary of Claude Debussy (1862-1918), Samuel

Barber at 100: The Composer and His World, A Place and a Name: Remembering the Holocaust, and Tribute to Julius Baker. The ensemble s Música en tus Manos project, its initiative with the Latino community, won the Knight Arts Challenge. Dolce Suono Ensemble has performed recently at venues including Symphony Space, Southern Exposure New Music Series (SC), Brooklyn s Roulette, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Princeton University, Bard College, and Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, and served as ensemble-inresidence at Cornell University, Kingston Chamber Music Festival, and Lake George Music Festival. The ensemble enjoys a partnership with the Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program of Washington National Opera at the invitation of Plácido Domingo and a co-presenting collaboration with the Arthur Ross Gallery at the University of Pennsylvania. Dolce Suono Ensemble s active commissioning program, with 44 world premieres in 11 seasons, has been a major force in building the repertoire. The ensemble has commissioned some of today s most eminent composers, including Shulamit Ran, Steven Stucky, Richard Danielpour, Jennifer Higdon, Steven Mackey, David Ludwig, Jeremy Gill, Zhou Tian, Benjamin C.S. Boyle, and Fang Man, as well as outstanding emerging composers through its Young Composers Competition. The ensemble s recordings include the much lauded Odyssey: 11 American Premieres (Innova) with Mimi Stillman, flute and Charles Abramovic, piano, and the recently released Freedom with Mimi Stillman, flute and Charles Abramovic, piano, joined by Yumi Kendall, cello, in premiere recordings by Mieczyslaw Weinberg, Richard Danielpour, and David Finko. Dolce Suono Ensemble concerts and recordings are regularly broadcast by WWFM, (Mimi Stillman co-host), Performance Today, WRTI, WNYC, WHYY TV, Kol HaMusica (Israel), and by other radio stations on four continents. www.dolcesuono.com About Mimi Stillman Mimi Stillman, one of the most celebrated and innovative flutists of her generation, has been hailed by The New York Times as a consummate and charismatic performer and the coolest flute player by Philadelphia Magazine. Critically acclaimed for her dazzling artistry and communicative powers, she has performed as soloist with orchestras including The Philadelphia Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfónica de Yucatán, Bach Collegium Stuttgart, and as recitalist and chamber musician at venues including Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center, Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, Southern Exposure New Music Series, Symphony Space, La Jolla Chamber Music Society, Princeton University, Bard College, National Sawdust, Verbier Festival, and Israeli radio Kol HaMusica. At age 12, Mimi Stillman was the youngest wind player ever admitted to the Curtis Institute of Music, where she studied with Julius Baker and Jeffrey Khaner. She was won many competitions and awards including the Young Concert Artists International Auditions and the Bärenreiter Prize for Best Historical Performance for Winds. Ms. Stillman can be heard on several CDs for EMI, Innova, and other labels. Her recordings Freedom

(Innova) and Odyssey: 11 American Premieres for Flute and Piano (Innova), both with duo pianist Charles Abramovic, have received rave reviews on four continents. A wide-ranging artist, she is highly regarded for expanding the flute repertoire through her arrangements and commissions. Ms. Stillman holds an MA in history from the University of Pennsylvania and is a published author on music and history, integrating scholarship with her artistic vision in projects with her hallmark, thought-provoking depth. A Yamaha Performing Artist and Clinician and sought-after educator, she has taught flute masterclasses at institutions including Eastman School of Music, University of California, Cornell University, National Flute Association, and Texas Flute Society. She is on faculty at Curtis Institute of Music Summerfest and Music For All National Festival.
