THE GULF CAPITAL ABU DHABI FESTIVAL VISUAL ARTS AWARD 2016

ABOUT THE ABU DHABI FESTIVAL Patron: H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation Established in 2004, the Festival is the largest celebration of arts and culture in the region. Through new commissions as well as international and regional premieres, it pushes the boundaries of artistic excellence and creative innovation and seeks to raise the awareness and understanding of contemporary artistic practice. With over 100 events spanning several artforms in many venues across the UAE, it welcomes 29,000 visitors each year. While most of the Festival is free, the main programme of concerts and performances is ticketed. The Festival has staged a major exhibition as part of it s main programme since 2008: Nja Mahdaoui (2008); Dia Al Azzawi (2009); Parviz Tanavoli & Adam Henein (2010); Rachid Koraïchi (2011); Hassan Massoudy (2012); 25 Years of Arab Creativity in partnership with Institut du Monde Arabe (2013); Bill Fontana Acoustical Visions & Desert Soundings (2014); View From Inside in partnership with FotoFest and Emirati Insights (2015). Access to the exhibition is free of charge and is accompanied by a major publication as well as guided tours and talks. ABOUT ADMAF Patron: H.E. Shamsa received her award from ADMAF Patron HE Sheikh Nahyan Mabarak Al Nahyan. This page, below: 2014 Abu Dhabi Festival Visual Arts Award winner, Moza Obeid Khamis Al Suwaidi, a fashion design student from HCT Sharjah, looks on as HE Sheikh Nahyan Mabarak Al Nahyan experiences The Power of the Palm sound installation featuring a burqa handcrafted in palm leaves. The Gulf Capital Abu Dhabi Festival Visual Arts Award was launched in 2013 and is an annual prize offering 10,000AED to the Emirati emerging artist or undergraduate student who demonstrates outstanding creativity in an original artwork inspired by the Abu Dhabi Festival exhibition. Applications from students from universities that have a strategic partnership with ADMAF are especially welcome. These include New York University Abu Dhabi, the Higher Colleges of Technology, Zayed University, University of Sharjah and UAE University. Previous winners of this award have been: 2015 Shamsa Al Dhaheri, NYU Abu Dhabi, for the photography series Untitled. 2014 Moza Al Suwaidi, HCT Sharjah, for the sound installation The Power of The Palm. 2013 Shakhbout Al Kaabi, NYU Abu Dhabi, for the photograph An Overthrown Throne.

Divided in seven thematic areas, the exhibition explores topics of Nation & Unity, Geography & Nature, Architecture & Urbanism, Portraiture & Identity, Religion & Spirituality, Language & Calligraphy, and Tradition & Heritage. From large-scale indoor and outdoor sculptures to paintings, drawings, photographs, collages, videos and installations, Portrait of a Nation captures the ever changing face of the visual arts in the UAE today. Meet Sarah Al Agroobi, Aisha Juma and Hind bin Demaithan and learn how these exceptional artists have created their works. Discover how Al Agroobi travelled the seven Emirates to create her sculpture The Desert Rose. HOW TO APPLY FOR THE 2016 AWARD I encourage everyone to take the initiative and apply for this award, so that we may all contribute to advancing the visual arts of our beloved nation! Shakhbout Al Kaabi, Abu Dhabi Festival Visual Arts Winner 2013 Admission Criteria Emirati emerging artists aged between 18 and 35 years old are eligible to apply Register anytime until 10 May. The best time to do this is on Sunday 10 April at 6.30pm where you will receive a special presentation plus the chance to attend the exhibition s VIP opening! Registered applicants will then be requested to submit a completed form together with an original artwork in any of the following fields: - Video / Film/ Animation - Photography - Visual Arts (painting, sculpture, installation, etc.) A jury selects the winner. They will be looking for the following attributes in the submissions: - Evidence of how the work was inspired by the Abu Dhabi Festival 2016 exhibition - Artistic Merit - Evidence of original and creative thinking - Personal application of technical skills - Emotional Impact The winner will be notified in June 2016 and will receive a cash prize of AED 10,000 How to Enter STEP 1: Visit the Abu Dhabi Festival 2016 exhibition Portrait of a Nation at The Emirates Palace Gallery and register for the Award at the information desk by 10 May. Admission to the exhibition is free. To attend, email education@admaf.org STEP 2: Create an artwork in any of the above mediums that is inspired by one or more of the works in Portrait of a Nation. The maximum size of the work should be 200 x 200 cm. STEP 3: Download the submission form from the ADMAF website: http://www.admaf.org/ en/article/programs-projects/awards. Complete it in full and send it by email to education@ admaf.org. Undergraduate students can also ask faculty member at their university for entry details. Terms & Conditions The competition is open to Emirati emerging artists aged between 18 and 35 years The competition is free to enter Each applicant may submit up to three entries Entries may be submitted in Arabic or English Only completed entries will be accepted The author/creator of the entry confirms that he/she has not been paid for their work Applicants will not receive payment for their entries In entering the Award, applicant warrant that their entry is completely original under his/her own creation, all content therein is accurate and lawful, and does not contain material that is harmful, libelous or defamatory to, or material that may infringe the right of, any person or entity in any nature. The applicant will be obliged to indemnify any damage ADMAF may suffer as a result of any inconsistency to the foregoing Applicants will retain ownership of copyright for their entry All artworks will be returned to applicants After submission to the competition, ADMAF will automatically obtain the right to use the submitted work in connection with the competition. ADMAF has the right to copy, edit, display, publish and make available all nominated work in any format (whether online or in print or otherwise) in connection with the competition There is one winner and the jury s decision is final No correspondence shall be entered into concerning the selection The winner must claim the prize within 12 months of receipt The winner agrees to attend the Award ceremony The winner agrees to appear in all photography, film and media appearances associated with ADMAF Creativity Award The winner agrees to join the ADMAF Alumni and contribute to the promotion of future editions of The Gulf Capital Abu Dhabi Festival Visual Arts Award. The applicant s contact details will be added to the ADMAF database in order to receive future updates from the Foundation SAVE THE DATES! 10 April 2016: Exhibition begins. Registration opens. 10 May 2016: Exhibition ends. Registration closes. 29 May 2016: Deadline for submissions. June 2016: Winner is notified. STEP 4: Submit your original artwork with your name and the title of the artwork clearly written to ADMAF, Floor 3, Makeen Tower (Ajman Bank Building), opposite Abu Dhabi Mall.
