Figurative language As well as using adjectives and adverbs, good descriptive writing uses figurative language, such as metaphors, idioms and personification. Metaphors Metaphors compare one object with another without using the words as or like, eg the sea was a heaving cloth of grey. 1 Circle the metaphors in this passage. I slumped onto my refuge, my warm bed, and sighed. A blanket of leaves lay outside. What a sanctuary, safe from the demands of my beast of a brother! That boy has a heart of stone.
