This season, we are presenting an icon of the Canadian music scene, harpist Judy Loman. We are showcasing Jacques Forestier, one of the most gifted young violinists to emerge in recent years. You ll find concerts by a wide range of internationally trained artists from here and from afar, with Edmonton connections of all sorts! The Prochazka Tribute Recital will feature international award winning Prochazka alumnus, cellist David Eggert. Our Music Among Friends concerts highlight rarely heard masterpieces. The November 11 th In Remembrance concert features the haunting Shostakovich Piano Trio no. 2, written during the Second World War. Judy Loman harp with special guests Sunday, September 23, 7:30 pm Muttart Hall, MacEwan Conservatory of Music Season Recital 1 Judy Loman is a Juno award winning artist who was appointed a member of the Order of Canada in 2015 for her service to the arts community as one of Canada s renowned harpists. A student of the legendary Carlos Salzedo, she was the principal harpist for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra for more than four decades and continues to be an active soloist and recording artist. Ms. Loman is on faculty at the Curtis Institute, the Royal Conservatory of Music and the University of Toronto. Joining Ms. Loman on stage will be several guest artists including former student and ESO principal harpist Nora Bumanis. Season Recital 2 Ivan Zenaty violin Dmitri Vorobiev piano Sunday, October 28, 7:30 pm Muttart Hall, MacEwan Conservatory of Music Ivan Zenaty has an exceptional wealth of repertoire including more than 50 violin concertos, and is a favoured guest artist with orchestras around the world. An international prizewinner, most notably the Tchaikovsky International Violin Competition, he has recorded much of the major violin repertoire on over 40 CDs. He has shared the stage with some of the world s greatest artists including Yehudi Menuhin, Yo-Yo Ma, Valery Gergiev and Neville Marriner. An acclaimed teacher, he is on faculty at the Cleveland Institute of Music. Dmitri Vorobiev is a native of Moscow who began his piano studies at the age of five. He earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Piano Performance from the University of Michigan School of Music, working with Arthur Greene. Dmitri has appeared as a soloist with orchestras including the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra, Pretoria Chamber Orchestra, Durban Symphony, Manhattan School of Music Symphony and the Winston-Salem Symphony. Currently he is an Associate Professor of Piano at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. This recital is sponsored by The Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences of Alberta, and the Wirth Institute, University of Alberta. MUSIC AMONG FRIENDS: IN REMEMBRANCE* Laura Veeze violin Rafael Hoekman cello Sarah Ho piano Sunday, November 11, 7:30 pm Laura Veeze has performed throughout Europe as a soloist, recitalist and chamber player. A versatile ensemble player, Ms. Veeze has performed with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Sinfonietta Amsterdam, the Holland Symfonia and the European Union Chamber Orchestra. Laura is a member of the first violin section of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and Principal Second Violin of the Alberta Baroque Ensemble. Rafael Hoekman was recently appointed Principal Cellist of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. He is founding member of the Tokai String Quartet, was a prize winner at the 2007 Banff International String Quartet Competition, and his chamber music performances have often been featured on national broadcasts. Sarah Ho has performed internationally as a soloist and ensemble player. In 2016, she became one of the first Canadians to perform at the Harbin Summer Music Festival in China. Sarah has performed with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, the Kitchener-Waterloo Chamber Orchestra and the National Arts Centre Orchestra. *ADMISSION BY DONATION FEATURED WORKS: Ravel- Sonate Posthume for violin & piano, Shostakovich- Piano Trio Opus 67

MUSIC AMONG FRIENDS: WINTER JOURNEY* Jihwan Cho baritone Viktoria Reiswich-Dapp piano Sunday, January 20, 2:00 pm Jihwan Cho was born in Korea and came to Canada in 2006. He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in vocal performance at the University of Alberta with Professor John Tessier. Notable performances include singing as bass soloist with Canada s Luminous Voices and performing in the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra s Verdi and Wagner Bicentennial Concert. Jihwan instructs voice at The King s University, and is conductor of the Edmonton Korean-Canadian Choir. Viktoria Reiswich-Dapp is a soloist and collaborative pianist with a passion for art song. Honing her skills at the University of Music-Karlsruhe, and the University of Music- Frankfurt, Viktoria received a Doctor of Music degree from the University of Alberta. She was the first and only performer awarded the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship. At the Franz-Schubert Institute, she studied with art song masters Elly Ameling, Barbara Bonney, Julius Drake and Helmut Deutsch. *ADMISSION BY DONATION FEATURED WORKS: Schubert- Die Winterreise

PROCHAZKA TRIBUTE RECITAL David Eggert cello Janet Scott Hoyt piano Sunday, February10, 7:30 pm Muttart Hall, MacEwan Conservatory of Music David Eggert is an international prize-winning cellist, who began playing at age three. After studying with Tanya Prochazka for 13 years, he went on to the New England Conservatory, McGill University, the Mozarteum and the Music Academy in Basel mentored by artists such as Clemens Hagen, Matt Haimovitz, Heinrich Schiff, Rainer Schmidt and Anner Bylsma. Since 2015, he has taught cello, chamber music and interpretation of contemporary music as a professor at the University of the Arts in Bern, Switzerland and is a member of the Lassus String Quartet. Season Recital 3 Janet Scott Hoyt is an Alberta-born pianist with a wealth of experience on the concert stage and in the teaching studio. Active as a chamber musician and collaborative pianist, performances have taken her across North America and Europe, including three decades with The Banff Centre, where she performed each summer with many of the world s finest musicians. Janet Scott Hoyt was named to the piano faculty at the University of Alberta in 1998 and retired in 2014. FEATURED WORKS: Bach- Unaccompanied Suite, Mendelssohn- Variations Opus 17

Season Recital 4 Clayton Leung viola Lisa Tahara piano Sunday, March 3, 7:30 pm Muttart Hall, MacEwan Conservatory of Music Clayton Leung was raised in the Vancouver area and studied at the University of Victoria and the Cleveland Institute. After joining the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in 2013, he has immersed himself in the local arts scene, making his ESO and Alberta Baroque Ensemble solo debut in 2016. He is on faculty at the MacEwan University Conservatory of Music. Lisa Tahara is a many-faceted musician; a soloist, chamber musician, collaborative pianist and teacher. She has appeared in concert throughout North America and Europe and with orchestras including the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestre Symphonique de Québec. Lisa has won numerous prizes at the national level including Edmonton s own Shean Competition. She is a founding member of the Amarok Ensemble, which has appeared at the Stanford International Showcase and the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival. Robert Spady clarinet Sarah Ho piano with guest Whitney Sloan soprano Sunday, March 24, 7:30 pm Muttart Hall, MacEwan Conservatory of Music Season Recital 5 Robert Spady is a clarinetist who is currently a member of the Royal Canadian Artillery Band. Born and raised in Edmonton Robert studied under clarinetist Don Ross before attending the University of Toronto and Indiana University (Bloomington), where he completed his Doctor of Music degree in 2011. Robert is a member of the WindRose Trio, one of the first Canadian groups to perform at the Harbin Summer Music Festival in China. He regularly performs with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and teaches clarinet for the YONA Sistema program. Sarah Ho has performed internationally as a soloist and ensemble player. In 2016, she became one of the first Canadians to perform at the Harbin Summer Music Festival in China. Sarah has performed with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, the Kitchener-Waterloo Chamber Orchestra and he National Arts Centre Orchestra. Emerging Artist EMERGING ARTIST* Jacques Forestier violin Susanne Ruberg-Gordon piano Sunday, May 5, 2:00 pm Jacques Forestier was born into a family of musicians. Now thirteen years old, Jacques began playing the violin at age two and has since delighted audiences across Canada with his passion for music and love of performing. He studies with William Vander Sloot at Mount Royal University in Calgary. A frequent prizewinner, Jacques has performed at Carnegie Hall, and has been featured as soloist with the ESO and the Alberta Baroque Ensemble. In April 2018, Jacques travelled to Geneva to compete in the Menuhin Violin Competition, the only Canadian to qualify. Susanne Ruberg-Gordon is Swedish-born and a highly regarded chamber-musician and collaborative pianist. She has shared the stage with artists such as James Campbell, Desmond Hoebig, Jens Lindemann and Dame Evelyn Glennie. She is pianist and core member of the Juno nominated Land s End Ensemble in Calgary. Suzanne has been on faculty at the Mount Royal University Conservatory since 1991, where she teaches chamber music and is Collaborative Pianist Coordinator. She has been the pianist for the acclaimed Morningside Music Bridge program in Canada, China and Poland since 2001. *ADMISSION BY DONATION
