READING 2 (Items 5 10) Read the text. For each question, shade in the bubble under the correct option. [6 marks] Garbage is all the things we throw away. It is a big problem that most of the societies talk about nowadays. They are worried about the amount of the garbage which is thrown away every day across the world. In the United States, each person throws away about four pounds or two kilogrammes of garbage every day. In the whole country, that equals 180 million tons of garbage every day. People believe that plastic is the most long-lasting form of garbage. Although paper forms the largest percentage of the content of landfills, many people believe that it is not as dangerous as plastic. This is because paper biodegrades and returns to earth, while plastic, they think, will remain forever in the landfill. Landfills are big holes used to bury garbage. In fact, there are many incorrect ideas about landfills. They are seen by some people as places where garbage is broken down by bacteria and puts goodness back into the earth. Others believe they produce dangerous chemicals which pollute the environment. In fact, although landfills produce some poisonous gases, there is less biodegradation taking place than people think. A well-managed landfill seems to preserve its contents rather than degrade them. For about 15 years after a landfill has been closed, it produces toxic gases like methane but after the first 15 years, it produces a very small amount. Then after this, the landfill will not change very much. 7
