PROFESSIONAL ACTING FOUNDATION COURSE PROSPECTUS 2017-18 AFFORDABLE ONE YEAR PART-TIME I genuinely believe it s one of the best experiences I ve ever had! Adnan MUSTAFA FORMER STUDENT

A SOLID FOUNDATION nisations who help to keep its classes and courses at the cheapest possible level. The course offers a solid foundation in stagecraft at Industry Standard, but also helps build self-confidence as a by-product of the modules. All classes take place at our community theatre in Islington, home to over 650 young actors who attend classes in the evenings and weekends. Come along five mornings per week for 36 weeks for an inspiring and substantial 36 weeks of professional education and training. Artistic Director - Andrew Harries Since 1972, in one form or another, we have been running after-school and weekend classes. Therefore, it was a natural fit to introduce a foundation course, in-line with the YATI ethos of inclusive, professional and creative teaching. Our students tell us, that our course, now in its second year, offers one of the most affordable and high quality programmes available, and we believe them. Our part-time foundation course is aimed primarily at 18-24 year olds for whom training full time would be unaffordable. YATI believes, that the arts can benefit everyone, and that money should not be a barrier to participation and training. YATI is supported by like-minded individuals and orga- Andy Serkis, internationally renowned actor and director, orginally trained at the theatre as a young man, he is now the President of YATI. Andy Serkis was influential in the development of the Foundation Course. There s still a huge gulf between people who can afford to go to drama school and those who can t. We help address the need for affordable drama training in London and provide a realistic view of what it s like to start out and develop a career in the industry.

PROFESSIONAL ACTING FOUNDATION Young Actors Theatre Islington offers a Professional Acting Foundation Course that will enable you to develop an essential performance vocabulary through training in acting, movement, and voice. The course will prepare you for whatever your chosen next steps may be, whether it s a full time drama school course or exploring a career in the performing arts. The course consists of: 3 x 12 week terms Two classes a day - one technical, one acting Monday to Friday - 10:00am-1:30pm The various modules will equip you with a solid foundation in a variety of performance skills and a deeper understanding of the realities of full time training and what it means to be a professional performer. YATI offers individual support for audition preparation and enjoys links with London drama schools such as: Guildhall School of Music and Drama and Mountview Academy. YATI gives you the opportunity to work with respected professionals including: Ex-LAMDA teacher Yvonne Morley, Steve Brownlie from RADA, and Andrew Harries, YATI Artistic Director who is an internationally experienced and award winning director and acting teacher. While the course has been designed to allow students to work part time It does require a high level of energy and commitment and it should only be undertaken on the understanding that work does not interfere with course commitments.

COURSE ELEMENTS Students are taught acting skills such as improvisation, character voice, singing, dance and stage combat. They also work on classical and modern plays and learn a variety of techniques for rehearsal and performance. The approaches and theories of key acting practitioners are core parts of the syllabus as well as audition technique. You will also explore what is involved in being a working actor and how the industry functions. Acting Training: Scene Study and Text Analysis Method Work Sight Reading Improvisation Acting for Screen Shakespeare & Classical Texts Creating a Character Theatre History Clowning Skills Training: Movement including Laban Dance including Period, Hip-hop & Jazz Singing including harmonies & auditions Audition preparation & technique Working with agents & casting directors The life of a working actor Understanding the industry Essential personal knowledge including tax & fundraising Performance Training: A full scale public performance Opportunities to show work in class Auditioning Theatre visits Agency Representation Students will also be considered for repre sentation by our in house agency but note that this is in no way guaranteed.

IN THIER OWN WORDS You really broadened my view of Acting and Theatre and I cannot explain how grateful I am for that. You made me look for the truth rather than just pretend. Eileen, 19 This theatre really pushes you to fulfil your dreams, everyone is behind you and I feel like it s almost home here Ruby, 18 There s a sense of community here. We support each other in whatever we do. I made very good friends here. Carmen, 21 I feel like you can be yourself here, you can make mistakes and it s ok. We have so much fun here and it really improved my confidence. Sarah, 20 It really helped me with auditions, to be more natural and less anxious. It might sound a bit cheesy but it does change your life. You can be yourself here. Adnan, 20 Training at YATI really pushes you to fulfil your dreams, everyone is behind you and I feel like it s almost home here Ruby, 18 The purpose of a foundation course is to explore the subject in more detail and to determine if this is the career you want to pursue or if there is another path for you. Whichever way you go, it is a fantastic outcome to know what you want to do with your future and have readily transferable skills.

FULL SCALE PRODUCTION The foundation year culminates in a full scale show which is open to the public and industry guests. Students are involved in every aspect from production; fundraising and ticket promotion alongside six weeks of preparation, rehearsals and development. the performances are a great opportunity for students to demonstrate all the skills they ve gained through the course and to provide a showcase to casting directors and agents. Summer 2016 saw our Foundation students perform Loveplay by Moira Buffini. Loveplay is an incisive, funny and sharply observed piece of theatre about changing social, economic and sexual mores first performed by the RSC in 2001. Foundation students rehearsed and performed the piece to an exceptionally high standard. The project provided the group with experience in promoting and raising the funds to put on a show. For this performance more than 230 tickets were sold over three nights.
