Season of Stories 2014-2015
October: A brilliant young Afro-Polish violinist, Beethoven s lunatic mullato, premiered the Kreutzer Sonata, but its dedicatee declared the sonata impossible and never played it. Tolstoy s torrid novella about dangerous sexuality, The Kreutzer Sonata, inspired Janáček. December: Winter Dreams is back by popular demand. Described as stunning by the LA Classical Music Examiner, this holiday concert revealed an understanding of the human condition that was emotional, far from ordinary brought new meaning to what holiday music can sound like. January: The shocking 1974 LA premiere of Vesalii Icones will be revived to celebrate the 80th birthday of Peter Maxwell Davies. The concert opens with the exceptional early music of Ireland s Gerald Barry, and the LA premiere of powerful vignettes by his close friend Thomas Adès. February: The Roaring Twenties roared because electricity suddenly lit up the night. This travelogue explores the intoxicating nightlife of clubs and salons across Europe. Our Jazz Age itinerary starts and ends in Berlin, goes Parisian, and cruises to Rio de Janeiro.
Stunningly beautiful, utterly serene and full of charm. It made aggressive bowing into raw theater and space-age glissandos something felt in your stomach. Mark Swed, LA Times March: Darker sounding bowed strings and bright sparkling plucked strings. Since the pre-baroque, cellists and double bass players have embraced their instruments evolving together. Rediscovered, the harpsichord now gives us a tingling charge of alternating current. April: As Russia redefines its place in the international order, timeless aspects of the Russian character, and themes that connect Stalin to Putin, captivate us again. Four modest heroes tell an epic story of how the eloquence of music was feared, and affirm that art ultimately survives politics.
