ABOUT THE MUSICAL Based on Disney's epic animated musical adventure and Edgar Rice Burrough's Tarzan of the Apes, Tarzan features heart-pumping music by rock legend, Phil Collins, and a book by Tony Award-winning playwright, David Henry Hwang. High-flying excitement and hits, like the Academy Award winning "You'll Be in My Heart," as well as "Son of Man" and "Two Worlds," make Tarzan an unforgettable theatrical experience. Washed up on the shores of West Africa, an infant boy is taken in and raised by gorillas who name him Tarzan. Apart from striving for acceptance from his ape father, Tarzan's life is mostly monkey business until a human expedition treks into his tribe's territory, and he encounters creatures like himself for the first time. Tarzan struggles to navigate a jungle, thick with emotion, as he discovers his animal upbringing clashing with his human instincts. Tarzan is the perfect family-friendly musical. THE CREATIVE TEAM Directors: Luke Bovenizer and Matt Wolfe Musical Director: Amy Rucker Choreographer: Miss Cindy/Generations PAC Orchestra Director: John Vermeulen Technical Director: Jamie Schwanekamp Movement Coach: James Sargent Production Manager: Derrick McPeak Costume Designer: Jude Berger Lighting Designer: Derryck Menard A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTORS, MUSIC DIRECTOR, & CHOREOGRAPHER Westerville Parks and Recreation Civic Theatre prides itself on bringing top notch theatre to the community, using residents and friends of Westerville to assemble the cast, crew and orchestra. Our 6th season is sure to please, and we are looking forward to bringing a title to life that hasn t been done around town. Tarzan is a beloved Disney title with nostalgia for all ages, featuring Phil Collins rocking soundtrack, lovable and memorable characters, and, of course, Tarzan and his friends! As is our trademark, Westerville Civic will tell this story through an ensemble cast of characters. Tarzan is set in the jungle, where realistic and committed animal-like movement will play a large part in grounding our story. If called back, our movement coach will work with actors to explore this physical aspect of the musical. We are looking for fearless actors! Tarzan is a tale of adventure and mystery that crosses the species, but it is also about the power of unconditional love and what makes a family. In theatre, we become a family during the run of the show, and this summer will be no different. For the audition, we ask that you sing a song that you are confident and comfortable with. Young singers should use their most pure tone voice in auditions. This is a pop rock musical. Choose music that reflects that. If you need a song, pick the song from this packet that best fits your voice and HAVE FUN WITH IT! 2
