THE COMPOSER Andre Boysen, r is resently a roessor in the music deartment at the niversity o Ne Hamshire, here he conducts the ind symhony and teaches conducting and comosition nder his leadershi, the NH ind symhony has released six recordings and een invited to erorm at regional conventions o the College Band Directors National Association and National Association or Music Education Previously, Boysen taught at Indiana State niversity and Cary-Grove (IL) High School, and as the music director and conductor o the Deerield Community Concert Band He remains active as a guest conductor and clinician, aearing ith high school, university and estival ensemles across the nited States, Great Britain, and Australia Boysen earned his Doctor o Musical Arts degree in ind conducting at the Eastman School o Music, here he served as conductor o the Eastman Wind Orchestra and assistant conductor o the Eastman Wind Ensemle He received his Master o Music degree in ind conducting rom Northestern niversity in 99 and his Bachelor o Music degree in music education and music comosition rom the niversity o Ioa in 99 He maintains an active schedule as a comoser, receiving commissions rom estival, university, and high school concert ands across the nited States Boysen on the International Horn Society Comosition Contest in 000, the niversity o Ioa Honors Comosition Prize in 99 and has tice on the Claude T Smith Memorial Band Comosition Contest, in 99 and 99 Boysen has several ulished orks ith the Neil A Kos Music Comany, Wingert-ones Music, Alred Music, Masters Music, and C Alan Pulications, including ieces or and, orchestra, clarinet and iano, and rass choir Recordings o his music aear on the Sony, R-Kal, Mark, St Ola and El laels THE COMPOSITION Bright Sunny Days as commissioned y Kimerly Conklin and the T Lamert Intermediate School th and th Grade Band in East Stroudsurg, Pennsylvania The genesis or the iece came rom mini-essays that Ms Conklin assigned to her and memers, asking them What ould you like our commission to e aout Although the resonses ere incredily varied, some ideas recurred ith regularity These ideas included riting a iece that as oth ast and un to lay and one that celerated the end o the school year and the eginning o summer The resultant iece, then, egins ith the clock ticking toard the end o the inal day o school The inds are laying rising diminished chords (gradually increasing excitement) and the chimes are laying an augmented version o the traditional Westminster Chimes This itch material ecomes the melodic asis or much o the rest o the iece Ater a short introduction, Bright Sunny Days is simly a oyul celeration o summer, set in quasi-rondo orm and eaturing a comlex metric structure WB9
