Appedix 1 Quarterwave Stub Surge Arrestors Quarterwave Stub Surge Arrestors Cosideratios ad Selectio Quarterwave Stub (QWS) Surge Arrestor Techology A uderstadig of the key cocepts of quarterwave stub techology ad its relatioship to lightig trasiets ca be of great beefit to trasmissio lie system desigers ad operators. With this uderstadig, system desigers ad operators ca more fully utilize lightig protectio systems that use QWS techology as well as uderstad the critical role multistrike ability plays i lightig protectio systems. Arrestor Plus T-series surge arrestors from Adrew Corporatio employ QWS techology, a uique desig that allows microwave sigals to pass uatteuated while shutig the lower frequecies associated with lightig-iduced trasiets to groud. This prove QWS techology is utilized i APT Arrestor Plus Surge Arrestors. To uderstad QWS techology, oe eeds to uderstad lightig. The lightig trasiet is characterized by a curret waveform with a 8-microsecod rise time (time to reach 90% of the peak value) ad a 20-microsecod decay time (time to decay to 50% of the peak value). Peak currets ca reach excessive values, but 50% of all strikes will reach values of oly 18 ka. It is importat to remember that this is oly a laboratory characterizatio of the lightig trasiet, but it facilitates stadardized testig techiques for the idustry. Figure 1 depicts a actual laboratory-geerated 8/20 µsec waveform that was used to evaluate Adrew surge arrestors. For more detailed iformatio regardig laboratory geerated surge waveforms, see IEC 60-2, ANSI-IEEE Std 4-1978, ad ANSI C62.1-1984. The substatial eergy associated with lightig trasiets has frequecy compoets ear dc with compoets of decreasig value of eergy extedig through 160 khz. The effectiveess of surge arrestors is characterized by the throughput eergy ad the ability to withstad multiple surges. These characteristics are readily measurable i a laboratory equipped with the appropriate test equipmet. Throughput eergy is a measure of the amout of eergy passed through the output of the device whe the iput of the device is subjected to a lightig trasiet waveform. The throughput eergy ca be calculated from the residual voltage waveform usig the relatioship: Figure 2 shows the residual output voltage preset whe a APT Series Surge Arrestor was subjected to a actual 8/20 µsec waveform with a peak curret of 20 ka. I this case, the residual voltage was recorded across a 50 ohm load. The resultig throughput eergy was 72 microjoules. The objective of the surge arrestor is to miimize the throughput eergy to a maageable level. Most microwave trasmitters ad receivers used i today s wireless systems are capable of withstadig throughput eergy levels of 10 millijoules or less. Residual output voltage of a APT quarterwave stub surge arrestor whe subjected to a 8 x 20 µsec curret surge with peak curret of 20,000 amperes. Laboratory geerated 8 x 20 µsec lightig surge curret waveform. Peak curret: 21 kiloamperes Time (microsecods) Figure 2 Time (microsecods) Figure 1 The ability to withstad multiple strikes is also a importat measure of surge arrestor merit. Multistrike ability is measured by subjectig the QWS surge arrestors to repeated surges ad observig if the arrestors cotiue to properly fuctio or show 40

Appedix 1 Quarterwave Stub Surge Arrestors sigs of degradatio. No evidece of failure or degradatio was observed after subjectig the Adrew Arrestor Plus surge arrestors to over 100 strikes at 50 ka peak curret usig a 8/20 µsec waveform. This level of reliability is essetial i protectig today s telecommuicatios systems from the potetial of damagig lightig trasiets. Arrestor Plus QWS surge arrestors are carefully desiged ad tested to provide a low impedace path to groud for ay lightig iduced trasiet eergy preset o the ceter coductor of the trasmissio lie. These surge arrestors are desiged to withstad multiple strikes of the most severe surges. The uique attributes of QWS surge arrestors are made possible by careful desig ad selectio of the geometry ad cross-sectioal area of the coductors that make up the shortig stub. QWS desigs result i extremely low throughput eergy devices with true multistrike ability. Whe selectig a surge arrestor, the RF performace must be cosidered. Characteristics that describe RF performace are operatig badwidth, VSWR (retur loss), isertio loss, maximum average power, ad passive itermodulatio distortio. The operatig badwidth of quarterwave shorted stubs is limited, but Adrew Arrestor Plus QWS surge arrestors are desiged to accommodate the operatig badwidth requiremets of today s wireless telecommuicatios systems. Quarterwave shorted stubs ca be desiged to accommodate up to 20% badwidth. The badwidth characteristics of the surge arrestors is similar to that of a badpass filter: RF sigals at the ceter of the bad pass uatteuated, while out-of-bad sigals (such as lightig trasiets) are diverted harmlessly to groud. Figure 3 shows the measured widebad S11 (retur loss) of a QWS surge arrestor. Note that i the bad of iterest, the S11 levels are typically -30 db. S11 vs Frequecy for a QWS surge arrestor It is key to ote that dc sigals caot be passed through the device. Whe dc passig is required, as is ofte the case for tower top active electroics, the it is strogly recommeded to use Adrew APG gas tube series surge arrestors. For more iformatio o APG gas tube series arrestors, see Appedix 2. The lowest ceter frequecy of operatio is limited to approximately 400 MHz, while the highest ceter frequecy is limited by the cutoff frequecy of the coaxial cable beig used. Figure 4 shows a cross-sectioal view of a QWS surge arrestor. The lower operatig frequecy is limited due to the physical size of the shortig stub. Whe the shortig stub reaches too log of a physical legth, the stub appears as a iductive load, resultig i excessive residual voltages. Quarterwave shorted stubs ca be desiged to accommodate systems operatig as high as 12 GHz. Figure 4 I the operatig badwidth of the Arrestor Plus QWS surge arrestors, the RF performace characteristics are optimal. At the operatig frequecies of the Arrestor Plus, the isertio loss is less tha 0.1 db, o more tha addig a coector to the trasmissio lie path. Figure 5 shows the measured S21 (isertio loss) performace of a APM type QWS surge arrestor. Note that i the bad of iterest, the S21 levels are better tha -0.05 db. The maximum average operatig power of the Arrestor Plus QWS surge arrestor is limited by the coector iterface. The suggested maximum average operatig power for Type N coectors is 600 watts at 900 MHz. The suggested maximum average operatig power for 7-16 DIN coectors is 3000 watts at 900 MHz. Exceedig these values ca result i excessive temperature rise ad permaet damage to the device. Itermodulatio distortio (IMD) is a major cocer i today s PCS, cellular, ESMR, ad other wireless systems. IMD is caused by oliear effects withi a device. For coectors, these oliear effects ca be caused by poor cotact betwee iteral surfaces, platig with ferrous materials, such as ickel, or by oxide build up betwee cotact surfaces. Frequecy (MHz) Figure 3 41

Appedix 1 Quarterwave Stub Surge Arrestors S21 vs Frequecy for a QWS surge arrestor Frequecy (MHz) Figure 5 Arrestor Plus surge arrestors are desiged with high pressure cotacts, premium platigs, ad are compesated to offer the best possible IMD performace. The fuctioality of Arrestor Plus QWS surge arrestors ca be readily evaluated by usig ordiary RF field test equipmet. If there is o degradatio of the VSWR or isertio loss of the arrestor, the the surge arrestor is reassurigly fuctioig as a trasiet lightig protectio device. VSWR ad isertio loss measuremets ca be made by usig vector or scalar etwork aalyzers as well as a variety of other readily available field test equipmet. No other maiteace is required. As obvious as it may seem, surge arrestors should ever be istalled or tested whe a storm is occurrig or approachig. System requiremets ofte dictate outdoor istallatio of surge arrestors. Arrestor Plus surge arrestors are ideal for these applicatios ad desiged to withstad the harshest eviromets ad are extesively tested to meet idustry stadard specificatios for waterproofig, vibratio, thermal cyclig, mechaical shock, salt spray, fugus, ad moisture resistace. QWS surge arrestors are excellet choices for wireless base statio applicatios where superior RF performace is required to esure call quality ad whe protectio agaist multiple lightig strikes is of primary importace. 42

Appedix 2 Gas Tube Surge Arrestors Gas Tube Surge Arrestors Cosideratios ad Selectio Gas Tube Surge Arrestor Techology To simplify selectig the appropriate gas tube surge arrestor for your system plots, maximum average power vs. VSWR have bee compiled. Figures 1 ad 2 show plots of maximum average power vs. VSWR for 90 ad 350 volt gas tubes. Each graph shows differet values of commoly used dc bias voltages. These graphs were established from extesive laboratory testig ad iclude the appropriate safety factors to esure proper gas tube selectio. Usig these graphs for selectig a gas tube will optimize the level of protectio required for your system. Gas tube elemets are offered i various spark-over voltages. Adrew Corporatio simplifies the selectio process by limitig the choice to two optios, 90 volt for GPS applicatios ad 350 volt for may other wireless applicatios requirig a dc bias. Plots of maximum average power vs. VSWR have bee compiled for the 90 ad 350 volt gas tubes from extesive laboratory testig ad have built-i safety factors to esure proper selectio. See figures 3 ad 4. Each graph shows several differet values of commoly used dc bias voltages. Usig these graphs for selectig a gas tube will optimize the level of protectio required for your system. Whe workig i today s eviromet of diplexed sigals, overlaid etworks, tower mouted amplifiers, ad multiple carriers, it is ecessary to verify that a system s maximum average power does ot exceed that ratig for the gas tube. The followig example illustrates the process of usig the voltage deratig curves that follow. Usig the Maximum Average Power Deratig Curves GSM Radio Operatig Coditios: 1. Number of carriers = 2 2. Power of each carrier (dbm) = +42 dbm carriers at the output of a hybrid combier (+45 dbm at combier iput) 3. VSWR = 1.25:1 4. dc Bias = 15 V 5. Nomial Impedace = 50 Ω 1. Calculate the peak istataeous voltage of a sigle +42 dbm carrier for a 50 ohm based system Average Power (average power per carrier i dbm/10) per Carrier (watts)= 10 1000 V rms per carrier (volts): = average power per carrier (watts) Impedace (ohms) V rms per carrier (volts) = 28.284 V peak per carrier (volts):= 2 V rms per carrier (volts) V peak per carrier (volts) = 40 Therefore, the peak istataeous voltage of a sigle +42 dbm carrier is 40 volts. 2. Calculate the peak istataeous voltage of a two, +42 dbm carrier, 50 ohm based system Peak istataeous voltage (volts):= V peak per carrier (volts) umber of carriers (N) Peak istataeous voltage (volts) = 80 Therefore, the peak istataeous voltage of a two +42 dbm carriers is 80 volts. 3. Calculate the peak istataeous power of two, +42 dbm carrier, 50 ohm based system Peak istataeous power (watts):= (Peak istataeous voltage (volts)) 2 Impedace (ohms) Peak istataeous power (watts) = 128 Peak istataeous power (dbm):= 10 log Peak istataeous power (watts) 0.001 Peak istataeous power (dbm) = 51.072 Therefore, the peak istataeous voltage of two, +42 dbm carriers is 128 watts (+51 dbm). 4. The gas tube selectio curves are specified as Maximum Average Power vs. VSWR. Therefore, it is required to calculate a estimate of the average (RMS) power from the peak istataeous power. A reasoable calculatio of this estimate is show below: Peak istataeous voltage (volts) = 80 RMS equivalet (volts): = RMS equivalet (volts) = 56.569 RMS equal power (watts):= RMS equal power (watts) = 64 Peak istataeous voltage (volts) 2 (RMS equivalet (volts))2 Impedace (ohms) Therefore, to utilize the gas tube selectio curves, a approximate value of 64 watts average power would provide a reasoable estimate. Note that for this calculatio, the dc bias voltage was ot specified ad the VSWR was ot specified. The gas tube selectio curves provide a deratig for both the VSWR ad dc bias voltage. 5. Apply calculated iformatio to the deratig curves. 43

Appedix 2 Gas Tube Surge Arrestors Adrew Arrestor Plus gas tube surge arrestors allow field replacemet of gas tube elemets. Gas tubes ca be replaced by simply removig the ut ad replacig the elemet. A gas tube elemet may ot always show outward sigs of failure or degradatio, therefore, routie maiteace ad ispectio is suggested. If the umber of storms i a area is high, gas tube elemets should be replaced more frequetly. Gas tube degradatio is depedet o the umber as well as the itesity of the lightig strikes. As obvious as it may seem, gas tube elemets should ever be replaced whe a storm is occurrig or approachig. Whe selectig a surge arrestor, the RF performace must be cosidered. Characteristics that describe RF performace are operatig badwidth, VSWR (retur loss), isertio loss, ad maximum average power. Arrestor Plus gas tube arrestors offer the widest badwidth available of ay gas tube surge arrestors o the market. Ulike quarterwave stub arrestors, Adrew APG gas tube arrestors ca be used for applicatios uder 400 MHz. A sigle uit ca be used for broadbad applicatios over the full frequecy rage of 0 2000 MHz. Figure 5 shows the measured widebad S11 retur loss plot of a gas tube surge arrestor. Note that i the commoly used 800 960 MHz ad 1700 2000 MHz bads, the S11 levels are typically better tha -30 db. S11 vs Frequecy for a APG gas tube surge arrestor S21 vs Frequecy for a APG gas tube surge arrestor Ulike QWS arrestors, a gas tube arrestor ca pass dc curret alog the ceter coductor, as is ofte required for today s wireless commuicatio systems icorporatig tower top active electroics. VSWR ad isertio loss measuremet of APG gas tube surge arrestors ca be made by usig vector or scalar etwork aalyzers as well as a variety of other readily available types of field test equipmet. The arrestors are dc passig broadbad devices ad ca therefore be used with time domai reflect meters or fault locatio equipmet. System requiremets ofte dictate that surge arrestors will be istalled outdoors. The Arrestor Plus APG series surge arrestors from Adrew are ideal for these applicatios ad are desiged to withstad the harshest eviromet. They are extesively tested to meet idustry stadard specificatios for waterproofig, vibratio, thermal cyclig, mechaical shock, salt spray, fugus, ad moisture resistace. Adrew Arrestor Plus gas tube surge arrestors are a excellet choice for broadbad frequecy applicatios or whe a dc bias is required for providig power to tower top devices. Please visit our website at www.adrew.com for more iformatio. Frequecy (MHz) Figure 5 Over the operatig frequecies of the Arrestor Plus surge arrestor, the isertio loss is less tha 0.1 db, o more tha addig a coector to the trasmissio lie path. Figure 6 shows the measured S21 (isertio loss) performace for a typical APG family arrestor. Note that i the commoly used 800 960 MHz ad 1700 2000 MHz bads, the S21 levels are typically -0.05 db ad -0.12 db, respectively. 45

Appedix 3 dc Passig T-Series Surge Arrestors dc Passig T-Series Surge Arrestors Adrew Arrestor Plus dc passig surge arrestors (US patet pedig) are true broadbad RF devices that are capable of allowig a dc bias to pass alog the ceter while shortig the lower frequecies associated with lightig iduced trasiets to the outer coductor ad to earth groud. By removig the gas tube from the RF path, they allow dc voltage to pass ad greatly ehace power hadlig capability. Arrestor Plus dc passig widebad surge arrestors are the same geeral shape ad size as a typical quarterwave surge arrestors. The arrestor is comprised of two coaxial coector iterfaces joied by a ceter coductor passig through a coaxial arrestor body. A shortig stub coects to the ceter coductor o a axis perpedicular to the ceter coductor through a port i the arrestor body. A gas discharge tube sits directly o top of the RF shortig stub, uder costat pressure applied by the gas tube sprig clip. The shortig stub, RF shortig stub, gas tube, ad gas tube sprig clip are sealed iside of the shortig stub sleeve ad arrestor body by compressig a o-rig betwee the screw-i gas cap ad the shortig stub sleeve. The fuctio of the various elemets i the dc passig T-series surge arrestor described above are best uderstood if modeled as a simple electroic circuit as show i figure 1, below. Figure 1 Electroic circuit diagram of dc-passig widebad surge arrestor The two coaxial coector iterfaces, ports P1 ad P2, provide couplig to coaxial cables that ru betwee the output of the radio equipmet ad the surge arrestor ad the surge arrestor ad the atea. This cable is idicated as havig a omial impedace (Zo) of 50 Ω. The ceter coductor sectios that are betwee the coaxial coector iterfaces ad the shortig stub are modeled as trasmissio lies TL1 ad TL2. The shortig stub is modeled as a iductor (L1) that coects to the ceter coductor betwee TL1 ad TL2. The outer surface of the RF shortig stub is coated with a dielectric material to create a series capacitace (C1) betwee the ed of the helical shortig stub ad the shortig stub sleeve, which is a groud (G1). A gas discharge tube with capacitace (C2) sits i parallel with capacitor C1 ad groud (G2). The iductace, L1, of the helical shortig stub ad the effective capacitace of parallel capacitors C1 ad C2 tue the surge arrestor givig it a broadbad frequecy respose. Uder ormal operatig coditios, the RF sigal will pass straight from P1 to P2 sice the iductor, L1, appears as a ope circuit. Whe a dc bias voltage is applied at either P1 or P2, it will also pass straight through the device. The dc bias voltage is preveted from shortig to either earth grouds, G1 or G2, by capacitors, C1 ad C2, because these capacitors appear as ope circuits to low curret dc bias voltages typically applied to power tower mouted amplifiers or active ateas. The gas i the gas discharge tube will ioize uder lightig strikes or other high voltage coditios allowig the trasiet to go from the ceter coductor to the outer coductor or groud (G2). For purposes of effective groudig, the surge arrestor ca either be mouted to groud through a bulkhead iterface or by moutig the surge arrestor to a copper groudig buss bar via threaded moutig hardware that is provided with the surge arrestor or ordered separately. 46
