NYPALA Productions presents Nathan RIPPY Fiamma BENNETT Gregory GOOD Colors under a Cloud a short story by Matthieu Silberstein

a man and a woman in a coffee shop. how much can really happen?

THE STORY A man and a woman in a New York coffee shop. He is a writer, stifled by his own somberness, refusing to write about anything other than the problems he sees everywhere in the world. She would like him to take her someplace else, to look at her again. But when she challenges him, his only answer is to undress her. Is this story being lived or written? It becomes clear that he is writing this story, but a writer doesn t always have control: her cell phone keeps ringing and the waiter looks strangely like her ex-boyfriend. Still, she tries to bring him back, to give them another chance, but he doesn t hear her. And so she decides to leave. Her empty seat is filled by an old man who invites him to a game of checkers. Maybe he can remind this young writer, that after all, this all might be just a game. The writer loses at checkers, but he doesn t lose the game. He realizes that with a little bit of imagination, even sitting in a coffee shop, you can take the woman you love to the far corners of the world.

DIRECTOR S STATEMENT What is a good story? Where is the line between the life we live and the story we tell? What does it mean to commit to a woman? How do we find happiness amidst the onslaught of the world s problems? Is this all just a game? I believe that humor and poetry can answer most of these questions. So let s ask them! Because we live in a time where it s good to remind ourselves once in a while that, despite the clouds that sometimes cover our world, there is also great beauty we just have to be willing to see it. MS.

THE DIRECTOR Matthieu SILBERSTEIN Matthieu Silberstein was born and raised in Paris, France. In 2002, freshly graduated from high school, he created a collective of artists called Fée du Cinéma through which he produced and directed four short films. Two of them, Hold On To The Smile and This Little Spark, were showcased in festivals both in France and the United States. After graduating with a degree in Cinema Studies from the Sorbonne in 2005, he received a scholarship to study at New York University. This time spent in New York, and other subsequent trips to America, have greatly shaped Matthieu s work. He showcased two collections of photography in 2008 and 2010 in Paris, New York Promenades and En Route, results of his many trips across the United States. During this time he also worked on several commissioned book projects, including his first published book of photography, Lycée Michelet, which was released in September 2010. In 2008, he expanded Fée du Cinéma into a production company, NYPALA Productions (New York - Paris - Los Angeles). He aims, through this company, to develop the artistic bridges between the two countries that share his heart. That year he directed the short film Another Night. His new short film Colors Under A Cloud (his first film in English) premiered in Paris on July 1, 2011. Matthieu moved to Los Angeles in September 2011.
