Page 12 REING Grade 4 - English Firefighting Then and Now 1 2 3 4 Have you ever seen a fire truck rushing by on its way to a fire? Long ago, there were no fire engines, hoses, or other tools to help fight fires. Many inventions have helped to improve how fires are fought today. Some of the first fire departments were created in the 1700s. The people who were part of them were volunteers and did not get paid. The only tool that they had to fight fires was a bucket. When there was a fire, the volunteers would form a line and pass the buckets from the water source to the fire. Years later, a water pump was invented. These pumps would send large amounts of water out onto a fire. Firefighters had to pull these water pumps to a fire. fter a while, firefighters brought the water pumps to fires using horses and wagons. Today, firefighters race to fires using fire engines and fire trucks. Fire engines carry a large amount of water that is blasted out of hoses to put out the fires. Fire trucks carry ladders, rescue equipment, and other tools that firefighters need. Firefighters fight fires every day, so it is important that they have the best tools to help them! PRI18-OP4-R
