Voca Plot Ok to photocopy or edit for classroom use =) Remembering and Applying Information from Course Content [summarizing] Highlight words that are important. After reading or listening, arrange the keywords to support summary. My Voca List: From: [title of reading passage] Auggie Wren s Christmas Story [sample words to be written by the student] owner cigar store shoplifter outrun the owner wallet address old blind lady grandson feel sorry celebrate bathroom a pile of cameras puts one under his arm Summary: [Sample Summary] An owner of a cigar store chases a shoplifter down the street. The thief manages to outrun the owner, but drops his wallet. The owner of the cigar store finds the address in the wallet, and on Christmas day goes to return it. But a very old blind lady opens, and takes the owner for being her grandson (the shoplifter). The owner plays along, feeling sorry for the old woman and celebrates Christmas Eve with her in her apartment. In her bathroom, stacked behind the toilet, he finds a pile of cameras still in their boxes. He puts one under his arm, does the dishes and leaves the now sleeping old lady in chair. HAPPY CORNER: What should I do? Auggie stole a camera from the old woman, but put it to good use. If you were Auggie, how would you put it to good use?

I the Book Constructing Sentences [making connections] Write about a character or anything a character in the story does. Make personal connections from the characters with yourself, somebody you know or close to you, or something (idea, event, experience, quote or concept) memorable. About the character what the character does Auggie [name of a character] Auggie is described as an impish person. [sample] Title of the story: Auggie Wren s Christmas Story My connection with [name of character] Auggie: [sample] Auggie reminds me of a long-lost friend of mine. Every time I write about something, he would make a parody version of it. HAPPY CORNER: Learn to forgive. Robert Goodwin stole something from Auggie s store. If you were Auggie, what words of forgiveness would you tell Robert?

Scrambled Stories Monitoring [follow-up story] The teacher writes a scrambled summary of the story; the learner does, too. After writing the summary, the teacher and the learner exchange with each other. The teacher puts the pieces of the story back together in order to create a cohesive summary; the learner does, too. 6 write a number here to identify the order [sample]the thief manages to outrun the owner, but drops his wallet. In her bathroom, stacked behind the toilet, he finds a pile of cameras still in their boxes. But a very old blind lady opens, and takes the owner for being her grandson (the shoplifter). An owner of a cigar store chases a shoplifter down the street. He puts one under his arm, does the dishes and leaves the now sleeping old lady in chair. The owner of the cigar store finds the address in the wallet, and on Christmas day goes to return it. The owner plays along, feeling sorry for the old woman and celebrates Christmas Eve with her in her apartment. HAPPY CORNER: Be a friend. Auggie pretended that he was Robert; the grandson of Ethel. What good things can you do for the blind grandmother?

Please say it again Paraphrasing [restatement of ideas] Restate or explain ideas in your own words while retaining the meaning and ideas in the original selection. Auggie and I have known each other for close to eleven years now. Since it's the only store that carries the little Dutch cigars I like to smoke, I go in there fairly often. For a long time, I didn't give much thought to Auggie Wren. He happened to be looking through a magazine in the store, and he stumbled across a review of one of my books. I was no longer just another customer to Auggie. I had become a distinguished person. HAPPY CORNER: Make a gratitude journal. Paul thanked Auggie for a wonderful story about Christmas. Who would you thank for? What about?

Wonderings Classifying Information to Be Learned [questioning strategy] Learner s Question: Who was Auggie Wren? Questions are generated by the student and the teacher while reading or listening to the story. Then, the student and the teacher exchange questions. Take turns in asking and answering written questions. Teacher s He was the man in the cigar store. [sample] Teacher s Question: The setting of this Christmas story is... Leaner s The setting is Brooklyn, New York. [sample] Question: Auggie considered himself as an artist because of his... Question: Auggie's story started with... Question: Auggie pretended that he was Robert because he... Question: At first, the author found Auggie's pictures... HAPPY CORNER: Be a tutor. What if any is the importance of Auggie s photographs? How can they be understood as a work of art?
