After multiple expansions spanning more than a decade, Grand Theatres and Interiors by France keep coming back to Milliken for their floor covering needs. The classic cinema experience is a lasting and memorable one for moviegoers in Bismarck, North Dakota. This project highlights the collaboration between Interiors by France and Milliken to provide a regal environment for Grand Theatres in Bismarck. The custom carpet for the theatre was so successful that it not only became the inspiration for the entire interior design, but also lasted for more than 13 years and three building expansions. Milliken carpet is simply a great product. We often use Grand Theatres to show others how well the carpet performs against daily traffic, especially when comparing old and new sections. If we were going to choose a floor material that was this plush, we wanted it to last. Thirteen years later, we re pleasantly and shockingly surprised at how the Milliken carpet has performed. - Jerry Brekke, owner of Grand Theatres Offices - Grand Theatres custom carpet pattern When the building was first constructed, Jerry Brekke, owner of the Grand Theatres, had a vision to provide a classic cinema experience brought to life through an Egyptian design. After years of working hand-in-hand with Milliken on a number of projects, Interiors by France knew that Milliken was the manufacturer to provide a functionally and aesthetically superior floor covering. The Grand Theatres project had many floor covering requirements, including: Cushioned carpet padding for comfort and a plush aesthetic Durability for high traffic areas, including the theater lobby and corridors A combination of bold colors, including reds, blues, greens and golds Custom Egyptian patterns and motifs that easily transitioned from large open spaces to corridors and flowed down stadium theatre seating 3
Theater - Grand Theatres custom carpet pattern Since originally constructed, the theatre has expanded three times. Interiors by France and Grand Theatres continued to look to Milliken for the same custom carpet, as the pattern and performance had more than exceeded expectations. ENSURING QUALITY AND CONSISTENCY Because the design was created many years before the first expansion, Milliken s new technological innovations required that the floor covering pattern be recreated, in order to print with Milliken s updated colors. Milliken ensured that the new carpet would match the original flooring and was able to provide the same exact coloring as the first installation. With the new additions also came pie-shaped theatres with specific floor covering installation requirements. The pattern needed to meet various floor angles and still look purposefully turned. Different borders and rug inserts were added to the broadloom design to create a flow from the original section to the additions, while lining up the pattern from one corridor towards the other. To accommodate for the unique floor plan, Milliken referenced the original carpet design and replicated the border multiple times. The installers were then able to cut the border into the pattern and seam it at the necessary angle. Installers also went up and down the stadium seating to match the pattern across multiple levels. According to Jerry, the design was so striking that the pattern easily seamed in the aisle areas, seating, and cross aisle, which extends in front of the theatre. With each building addition we kept coming back to the carpet. The striking beauty has become the pillar of the entire interior design. Jerry Brekke, owner of Grand Theatres 4

Throughout each expansion and new theatre design, they ve returned to Milliken for beautiful floor covering with unparalleled performance. Milliken s custom carpet beautifully anchors and connects each space within the theatre.
