Video Auditions for Student Actors: You must submit a video audition on YouTube. Prepare one audition monologue to perform from a play. Audition monologues from films will not be considered. We recommend that you do a monologue (timed at about two to two-and-ahalf minutes) that you believe will show you to your best advantage. Try to avoid monologues with extreme characterizations; we want to see the person, not the mask. Costumes and elaborate properties are not appropriate, but if you wish to use simple hand props or rehearsal furniture you are free to do so. Videos of live public performances will not be accepted. Treat this monologue as you would a live audition. When uploading your video to YouTube: Make sure that your video is NOT set to Private o You may set the video to Unlisted to prevent unauthorized viewers Title your video Whittier Theatre Audition: [Your Name] Indicate what play your monologue comes from in the description Email the video s link to talent@whittier.edu Please contact Talent Scholarship Program at talent@whittier.edu if you need assistance submitting your YouTube audition. We would like to request that you take a few minutes on that video either before or after your monologue to talk directly to the Scholarship Committee about yourself. Be very direct and informal; tell us about yourself, your theatre background, what you like about it, your future life and/or career plans, and anything else that you might wish to share about yourself. We want to get to know each candidate in the limited time available so that the Committee s decisions can be as well informed as possible. Student Designers, Technicians, and Stage Managers: You don t need to do an acting audition (although you are welcome to do so). The Committee would like to see as many examples of your work as possible, so please submit a resume of your production work. Student stage designers and technicians are encouraged to submit portfolio materials consisting of any of the following: photos and/or photocopies of stage designs, scene painting, lighting designs, costume designs, freehand drawing and painting, mechanical drawing, computer-aided drafting, and examples of scenery and/or costume construction. Stage managers are encouraged to submit stage management prompt books or other related materials. Please call Professor Brian Reed at (562) 907-4731 to discuss your portfolio and to schedule a phone interview. If you need more information about preparing for the auditions as either an actor or a designer/technician/stage manager, please feel free to contact Talent Scholarship Coordinator David Laine at talent@whittier.edu. Best wishes for your audition and break a leg! Sincerely, Jennifer Holmes Professor and Department Chair Department of Theatre and Communication Arts
