1 APPLICATION GUIDELINES 2017 TEEN ARTISTS ACADEMY WHAT The is an intensive arts program for serious students ages 13 to 18 in visual arts, music (instrumental and voice), dance, and theatre. Participants receive concentrated instruction and training in the discipline of their choice from professional artists through lectures, master classes, and exposure to art experiences. Participants also work on a collective production and art exhibition that they present to the community at the end of the program. Participants MUST be available to attend all weeks of the program. WHEN Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. The culminating visual arts exhibition opens July 28 and runs through August 5. The stage production takes place July 28 and July 29. WHERE Southwest Arts Center, a Fulton County facility located at 915 New Hope Road SW, Atlanta, GA The closest MARTA bus stop (#72) is approximately one mile away. COST If accepted into the Academy, there is a $50 activity fee for Fulton County residents and a $60 activity fee for non-fulton County residents. All fees are due by the first day of the program. AUDITIONS & PORTFOLIO REVIEWS SATURDAY, MARCH 18, 10:00 AM 3:00 PM CALL TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT Applicants must follow the guidelines for their discipline that are outlined in this packet. The application process includes: Audition for dance, music, and theater applicants Portfolio Review for visual arts applicants One Typed Paragraph describing the applicant s artistic practice. Paragraph should include (a) why applicant is an artist, (b) what motivates her/him to create or be involved in their arts genre, (c) what art area(s) he/she is interested in pursuing, and (d) any significant achievements to date. One (or more) Letter of Recommendation (on form included in this packet) from an arts professional in the applicant s field. This letter must be submitted in a sealed and signed envelope. Interview with instructors Acceptance Notices will be sent via by April 14. Applicants arriving late or without a completed application packet (including all required support materials) will not be allowed to audition or interview.

4 Review Format 2017 CREATIVE WRITING PORTFOLIO REVIEW GUIDELINES Saturday, March 18, 10:00 am 3:00 pm Creative Writing is for people who love to write and who are not afraid to get on stage to showcase their work. During the summer, about 60 percent of your time will be spent crafting short stories, essays, poems, and spoken word pieces; the other 40 percent will focus on performing your work. Bring a portfolio of your best writing. Perform a dramatic reading of an original work that you have written. Be prepared to discuss what motivates you to write and your writing process. At least one recommendation from a current English or literature teacher Portfolio Applicants arriving late or without a completed application packet (including all required support materials) will not be allowed to audition or interview.
5 Audition Format 2017 DANCE AUDITION GUIDELINES Saturday, March 18, 10:00 am 1:00 pm Auditions take place as a group and begin promptly at 10:00 am. You should arrive 30 minutes beforehand to warm up. The entire audition process lasts approximately 1-1/2 hours: Participate in a condensed group class consisting of ballet barre and modern combinations. Perform a short (1-minute) solo that you have constructed yourself or have done before. You must provide your own music. Interview with instructional staff after your solo. At least one recommendation from a dance professional Resume listing prior dance experience, including years of training and your teachers names and schools Dress Requirements Females black leotard (any style) pink tights for ballet black footless tights for modern pink or brown ballet shoes hair in a bun Males black or white short-sleeved shirt black footless leggings or male tights ballet shoes Applicants arriving late or without a completed application packet (including all required support materials) will not be allowed to audition or interview.
6 Audition Format 2017 MUSIC AUDITION GUIDELINES Saturday, March 18 Voice - 10:00 am 3:00 pm Instrumental Music 10:00 am 3:00 pm Voice Sing one (1) piece in any style that shows vocal range, skill, and agility. Demonstrate knowledge of basic music notation and sight singing. Piano Play two (2) works of a contrasting manner. Play three (3) chromatically adjacent scales. Wind Instruments Play three (3) major scales. Perform a solo piece with contrasting sections. Your solo should demonstrate technical ability and lyrical playing. No band or orchestra music. Strings Play two (2) major scales 2 octaves (see list below): o Violin G and A Major o Viola C and D Major o Cello C and D Major o Bass F and G Major Perform a solo piece with contrasting sections. Your solo should demonstrate technical ability and lyrical playing. No band or orchestra music. At least one recommendation from a music professional Dress Requirements Black and white or all black performance attire Applicants arriving late or without a completed application packet (including all required support materials) will not be allowed to audition or interview.

Sing 16 bars of a song of your choice. Be prepared to perform a scene from a side with 4 to 6 other participants. At least one recommendation from a theatre professional Headshot (photo of applicant) Resume Dress Requirements You should be dressed for movement (there will be a brief movement segment). Attire will be factored into the overall audition score. 8 Review Format 2017 VISUAL ARTS PORTFOLIO REVIEW GUIDELINES Saturday, March 18, 10:00 am 3:00 pm Bring a portfolio of your best work that contains: o 2 drawings from life (still life and landscape) o Figure drawings from a live model and from photographs o 1 painting (can be any medium) at least 8 inches by 10 inches or larger that shows a command of color and composition This can be a school assignment that is either figurative or abstract. o 1 "personal painting" of your choosing This should demonstrate your creativity and choice of subject matter outside of school assignments. A 3-dimensional piece can be included as long as you can easily transport it. You must have all of the items listed above in order to be considered. Work created in previous sessions of the will not be accepted. Be prepared to discuss your work as it relates to concept and technical process. At least one recommendation from a visual arts professional Portfolio There are no dress requirements.
