About Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia ~From Tokyo to the rest of the World, we continue promoting new films and filmmakers~ Over the last 17 years, our festival has attracted an audience of more than 300,000! Short Shorts Film Festival (SSFF) began in Harajuku, Tokyo in 1999, and in 2004 it was recognized by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences as a qualifying festival for the short film categories of the annual Academy Awards. Receiving more than 5,000 short film entries per year, we have become a major international short film festival where many young filmmakers take their first steps into the film industry. History of the Festival 1999 American Short Shorts Film Festival is born For the first time in Japan, a film festival dedicated to short films is created. In 2002, the festival becomes international, with the title Short Shorts Film Festival (SSFF). 2004 Short Shorts Film Festival Asia (SSFFA) is launched SSFFA is established following an idea proposed by Gov. Shintaro Ishihara of Tokyo Metropolitan Government. SSFFA focuses on Japanese shorts as well as other Asian short films. SSFF becomes a qualifying film festival for the annual Academy Awards. The festival Grand Prix winner is now eligible for nomination in one of the short film categories of the annual Academy Awards. 2005 The two festivals become SSFF & ASIA SSFF and SSFFA are held at the same time, as SSFF & ASIA. Short Shorts Film Festival EXPO 2005 is held:an official festival sponsored by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Economy, the festival is held at EXPO 2005 in Aichi, on the theme of Nature s Wisdom. 2008 10 th Anniversary of the festival New competitions, such as Stop! Global Warming and Online start. Brillia Short Shorts Theater, the first theater in Japan dedicated to short film, is established. Mark Osborn, who participated in SSFF 2000, makes Kung-Fu Panda. Jason Retiman, who participated in SSFF in 2001, makes Juno, which grossed over US$200 million world wide. Jason Reitman and writer Diablo Cody participate in the festival with the premiere of Juno. Ben Suzuki is the first Japanese filmmaker to win a Grand Prix at the festival. 2009 Two new competitions are established Music Shorts Competition, including music video and creative categories, is created. Let s Travel! Project, co-organized by Japan Tourism Agency, is launched. 2010 New challenges with 3D A collaboration with Asiana International Short Film Festival (Korea) begins. A 3D short film program is shown for the first time. Online short film project is launched. 2011 Revive Japan with the power of images Charity activities including a short film production organized in aid of the Great East Japan Earthquake. 3D program, CG program and Football program are established. 2013 Festival celebrates 15 th anniversary Anniversary programs are shown Screenings are held at Tokyo SKYTREETOWN for the first time. 2014 Style Of Cinema Celebrity and film commentator LiLiCo becomes the Festival Ambassador. The Tokyo Metropolitan short film project and UULA Short Film Production Project are established. Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Food&Agri Program is launched 2015 CINEMATIC MOMENT Southeast Asian Program and Symposium supported by Asian Center is held. Andaz Toranomon 1 st Anniversary Party of Andaz Toranomon with filmmakers in attendance. Attendance of George Lucas at the Embassy party in 1999 Festival is held at EXPO 2005 in Aichi prefecture, Japan Jason Reitman and his producer participate in the 2008 festival Actor Koichi Sato participates in a charity short film SHORT SHORTS FILM FESTIVAL & ASIA 2016 3
