Book by: Mark O Donnell & Thomas Meehan Music by: Marc Shaiman Lyrics by: Scott Wittman & Marc Shaiman Based on the New Line Cinema film written and directed by John Waters Orchestrations by: Harold Wheeler Arrangements by: Marc Shaiman HAIRSPRAY is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). In HAIRSPRAY, it s 1962 the fifties are out and change is in the air. Baltimore s Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, has only one passion: to dance. She wins a spot on the local TV dance program, The Corny Collins Show, and overnight is transformed from an awkward overweight teen outsider into an irrepressible teen celebrity. But can Tracy overthrow the program s reigning princess, win the heart of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a television show without deflating her hair??? You ll find out if you audition for this year s All-State Production HAIRSPRAY. The musical is based on the John Water s 1988 film HAIRSPRAY. The musical opened on Broadway in August 2002 to rave reviews and sold-out box offices. Now is your opportunity to be part of the first nonprofessional production in Illinois. We are looking for a diverse cast of actors who can sing, act, and dance well. If you feel you have what it takes to say Good Morning Baltimore! or in our case Hello All-State 2009! read the necessary information and return the materials by the deadline date. Each school will have a total of 30 slots for auditionees. The slots can be used any way your high school sponsor chooses. Your school may not nominate more than 30 auditionees total to audition for All-State. However, if you would like to audition for more than one area your audition only counts as one student. For example: Jane Smith chooses to audition for the show and audition for the pit, and be interviewed for tech crew, her audition only counts as one auditioned for her school. ***DEADLINE for all forms: Received by May 16, 2008*** There is a $10 processing fee for auditions. Checks should be sent with the audition forms and made out to Illinois Theatre Association. Note: You only have to pay once, even if you are auditioning for more than one area. www.illinoistheatrefest.org - 14 - An event produced by the members of the

ALL-STATE PRODUCTION COMMON QUESTIONS Q: Can I apply in more than one area? A: Yes, you may. Be sure that you are truly interested in being considered in each area. While we may consider your preference, you will be placed primarily according to the good of the show, not according to your preference. Q: Do I need a résumé? A: Yes. A résumé is a key component of any job interview. PLEASE FOLLOW THE RÉSUMÉ GUIDELINES AND VIEW SAMPLE RÉSUMÉS AT: www.illinoistheatrefest.org/all-state Q: Where will auditions take place? A: Actor, technician, and musician auditions/interviews will take place at Effingham School (Effingham, Illinois) June 7, 2008 and Nazareth Academy (LaGrange Park, Illinois) June 14 and 15, 2008. Q: Can I do other things at the Theatre Festival? A: No. Being a part of the All-State ensemble will be a full-time job while you re at the Festival. There is one exception: YOU ARE ABLE TO ATTEND THE COLLEGE AUDITIONS. Q: Can I do other shows at my school if I m in the All-State ensemble? A: That depends on your school s production schedule. Being a part of the All-State show is a major commitment. You must be available for ALL rehearsals; we will not make exceptions. Be clear on your obligations to your school before you apply. Q: Is there an application fee? A: Yes. $10.00 Q: What are the other costs? A: All ensemble members will be responsible for costs incurred for meals, lodging at auditions, all rehearsals, and at the Festival. Adding up all the weekends involved: food, lodging, and Festival expenses will be no more than $450. Q: How can I get help? A: You may be able to find a sponsor in your community who could help defray the cost. At some schools, the administration will support your All-State production participation the same as they would support an all-state athlete. If you are selected for the ensemble, we will send a letter to your principal suggesting he/she consider this kind of financial support. We will also provide you a tips for fundraising sheet. WE HAVE A LONG HISTORY OF SUCCESSFUL INDIVIDUAL STUDENT FUND-RAISING AND SPONSORSHIP. This year, a limited number of scholarships are available to students with financial need. Q: Do I have to be at all the rehearsals? A: Yes, plan on it. Each All-State ensemble member is expected to attend every scheduled rehearsal, and of course, the Festival performances. Check your school and family calendars. BE PROMPT. We will begin at the specified call-time. Q: Will you really kick me out of the show for not coming to rehearsals or Tech calls? A: Yes. Q: If I have conflicts with the schedule, should I audition? A: No. The All-State production process is intense. And, many people want to be a part of it. We have to make positions available to those who are truly able to commit to the entire process. - 15 - An event produced by the members of the
