The New Garrick Gazette Garrick Theatre Club Inc. 16 Meadow Street, Guildford, WA 6055 PO Box 122, Guildford WA 6935 www.garricktheatre.asn.au EDITOR: TOM GOODE PRINTED BY DOCUPRINT Issue No. 549 OCTOBER 2017

GARRICK THEATRE CLUB INC. NOTICE OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2017 The 2017 Annual General Meeting will be held at the Theatre 16 Meadow Street, Guildford on Friday 15 December 2017 at 7.30pm (registration from 7pm) All nominations for committee must be received no later than 5pm Friday November 24 and no nominations will be accepted after this date. Nominations will be published in the next Garrick Gazette. The nomination for committee form is included in this issue. You must be a financial ordinary member to vote so please ensure your membership is current. Junior, Student or Production Members are not eligible to be either the Proposer, Seconder, or to be nominated, for any Committee positions. A Word from the Club Vice-President As editor of the Garrick Theatre newsletter, I have used my authority to usurp the space usually allocated to the President. I wish to urge all members to consider carefully for whom they vote in the upcoming elections for the Club officials and committee. Garrick is having a stellar year under the Presidency of Ken Harris with our productions creating both box office and critical acclaim. It has been a number of years since Garrick s One- Act season achieved Sold-out status. Next year looks equally exciting. Through his theatrical contacts, Ken has been able to secure the services of Ray Omodei and his professional support team to direct a revival of The Way of the World for our opening season of 2018. To complement this success we have enjoyed some highly successful social events and perhaps more importantly introduced a more formal process by which Committee members meet and greet cast and production teams early in rehearsal and then formally and publicly thank them on final night. Ken has lead the way in taking Garrick out into the community, ensuring that the Club participated in the Guildford Heritage Festival and that the club was represented in the Hills One Act festival. Liaison and cooperation with the City of Swan is at a high level with the club able to work harmoniously with the city on issues such as key security. This could be essential for the future of Garrick as we exist in an ever-changing world. Closer to home is the improved relationship with the Stirling Arms, reopening their car park to our members. In between all this activity, Ken accepted the responsibility for the membership portfolio using innovative methods to bring new members and skills to the club. I ask again that you think carefully and consider the best interests of the Club in casting your vote. Tom Goode Vice President 2017

Rehearsals are in full swing and its looking good. Opening Night is 23 November With casting finally complete rehearsals are underway. The Glass Menagerie In rehearsal

2018 Season 1 - The Way of the World by William Congreve, Directed by Ray Omodei Production meetings have been held and planning is well underway for this production. Season 2 100 Lunches by Leo W Sears, Jack Sharkey directed by Les Lee. Season 3 Beyond a Joke by Derek Benfield directed by Andrew Watson Season 4 Natural Causes by Eric Chappel directed by Susan Vincent Season 5 Red Riding Hood directed by Anita Bound Looking Ahead Garrick is currently battling two serious disadvantages. Storage space for set materials, props and costumes is inadequate and there is a serious need for a rehearsal room in addition to the Foyer. Goodwill and commonsense means these issues are managed but the situation is not ideal. There are also external influences that impinge on Garrick. Within the past 12 months, the City of Swan commissioned a review of the Meadow street heritage precinct. The recommendations from this review were only narrowly defeated at Council. More recently members will have noted a Council proposal to close Guildford Library To tackle these and other related issues a special sub-committee is to be formed. Club Notes Garrick is well on the way to establishing a tradition of visits to Northam to support Theatre in that town. Thanks again to Sue Vincent for organizing the visit. Our links with Northam will be strengthened with Northam resident Les Lee directing Season 2 next year. Les is playing Alfred in Cocky s Crossing. Welcome to the following new members: Carlise Kearney, Anita Bound, Jacqueline Warner, Timothy Presant, Laura Goodlet The following members will chalk up another milestone in October: Kheira Berche, Peter Bourke, Simon Brown, Lynne Devenish, Derek Jobe, Linda Knight, Graham Miles, Victoria Pavy, Jean Petersen, Jonathan Pilkington, Senga Searle, Mary Macbeth Pleased to hear Robert Vincent is well on the road to recovery.
