2 Hello Everyone. The Garrick year is well and truly flying by now with our second season all wrapped up. A big well done to Susan Vincent, Kerry Goode, the cast and crew of Garrick Salutes Gallipoli. I saw this show twice and both times it was an amazing experience and so superbly put together. Well done everyone. The committee is now looking at next year and the plays that we would like to see. We have had some submissions already so if you have a play you would like to submit please get copies to us for reading. There s some very important updates in this Gazette so please make sure you have a good read and don t hesitate to get in touch with the committee if you have any questions. We shall see you all back at the club soon. I look forward to the remaining seasons of the year as I m sure the rest of you do. 3 GARRICK SALUTES GALLIPOLI! WHAT A FULL ON SEASON THAT WAS! Congratulations to Susan Vincent, Kerry Goode and their wonderful cast, orchestra, crew and support team. We could have filled another week I m sure. The only negative I can think of is I don t think I could face making another pot of pea and ham soup for a while. That was quite a mission. Enough soup for between 1000 & 1200 people. Thankyou so much to Elaine who was such a wonderful back up for me on the 2 nights I couldn t be there, and the lovely front of house people for their assistance and for putting up with the invasion in the kitchen. The supper was a resounding success. RENOVATIONS As many of you are aware, our landlord, the City of Swan, has embarked on a program of continuing upgrading of its civic historical buildings, and Garrick occupies one of those buildings. The timeline for this project had been a lengthy one, but Geoff Holt has been our Man on the Ground liaising with CoS. Whilst it is a bit disruptive to our 2015 program, it can t be helped, and in the long run we ll be the winners. We are still a little up in the air as to when, even if, the renovations will start. So not only have we deferred Prepare to Meet Thy Tomb to 2016, it is not entirely certain if Silhouette will go ahead this year. To that end, Fred has wisely cancelled his auditions so as not to waste anyone s time. HOWEVER, please contact him with your Expression of Interest. Should the theatre be ready in time for the planned season, Fred will need to cast it pretty quickly. Details of the play on page 4. ALSO...Committee has had to cancel this year s One-Act Season. Keep watching this space for more details. BIRTHDAY WISHES TO THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS APRIL - Ronald Dayman, Val Dreyer, Priya Fewkes, Ruby Gastray, Jonathan Hoey, Jan Bruechle, Kylie Isaia, Jennifer Jobe, Bob Johnston, Sylvia Kural, John Lobb, Anna Pilkington, Clayton Reichert, Norm Sullivan, Susan Welbourne. MAY - Keith Abbott, Rhonda Avery, Terry Brown, Janice Brooks, Elaine Gilberthorpe, Maureen Harvie, Dmitri Kain, Georgie Kinnane, Alan Shaw, Zac Simpson, Brendan Tobin, Michele Varhoe, Robert Whitehead, Persephone Whitelock & Armaan Zoeb. WELCOME TO THE FOLLOWING NEW MEMBERS Patricia Butler, Daniel Avery, Katrina Mortant, Margaret Robinson, Sue Fairhurst
4 AUDITIONS FOR THE WEE SMALL HOURS DIRECTED BY ALICE DALE Two Men are required and a Teenage Girl for a voice over. The Older Man, who needs to pass for 58 on stage should be still attractive and have a very cultured English accent. He is an actor, Gregory Phillips, who became a TV star and is full of himself. He had a relationship with the successful, attractive actress many years ago, then dumped her. The Younger Man, Barry, in his thirties, is a dinky-di loveable Aussie bloke who is the stage manager of the play that is about to open with the attractive actress in it. Both men have had a relationship with her and when the two men find they have to work together the fireworks start flying. The Teenage Girl needs acting experience. Although she will only make a recording of her voice, she is required to get across two different emotions which is quite difficult with voice only. Due to planned renovations at Garrick Theatre, Auditions will be held at the Jack Healey Centre, Kalamunda on Sunday June 7th Rehearsals will commence at the beginning of August and run through till opening on the 1 st of October. To make an appointment for an audition contact Alice on or warandale@iinet.net.au when you will receive an audition piece and a time for your audition. EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST INVITED Silhouette by Simon Brett, directed by Fred Petersen. ROLES TO BE FILLED Martin Powell, a successful charismatic actor (early fifties) Celia Wallis, a successful attractive actress (early forties) Detective Inspector Bruton, good looking (mid thirties) Detective Sergeant Fisher, a burley plain clothes-man. (25-30) WPC Leach, a Police woman ( mid twenties) Detective Constable Wilkins...(35-40) WPC Carter...Police woman (25-30) Neville Smallwood...Journalist (mid thirties Detective Bruton questions actress Celia Wallis about the murder of her husband Martin. Celia is quite obviously in the clear, Neville Smallwood, the drunken journalist sleeping in her bed, is an extremely shady character who argued with Martin before the murder. The solution to the initial puzzle is simple, however, all our expectations of the characters and the plot are turned on their head. Not even the figure silhouetted eerily against the glass front door is at all what he or she seems. The denouement of this witty and original play will surprise and perplex. Fred Petersen / or - fredjean1@bigpond.com At this point in time we are still uncertain if this production will be able to go ahead in CALLING FOR SUBMISSIONS FOR 2016 Prospective directors for 2016 need to get their submissions in as soon as possible. The deadline for this is 30th June. We ask that you provide 2 copies of the script if possible. In order to plan a balanced program for the year it is helpful that you submit 2 plays of different genre. Although this is not compulsory, it will increase your chances of obtaining a production season. Contact Secretary Elaine Gilberthorpe to arrange submission. There was a big chuckle at the last Committee Meeting concerning a Finley Award Adjudicator, who shall remain nameless. We received the usual critique after the adjudicator had been to see our last production Garrick Salutes Gallipoli. These critiques are headed with the name of the production, date, adjudicator etc. Well... Whilst there were a few, well maybe a lot, of risqué moments, and we did feature some ladies of the night, renaming the show Garrick Does Gallipoli is going a little overboard don t you think?
5 New Website for Garrick Theatre: Garrick Theatre Technical News: To compliment the proposed renovations by the City of Swan to the theatre, the Garrick committee has decided to fund the replacement of our ageing production equipment. Our technical supervisor, Geoff Holt, is busy planning and preparing to upgrade equipment including: digital audio mixer, audio amplifiers, bio-box monitoring and recording equipment, computer automation for the operation of lighting, sound and effects for shows, high definition video monitoring system for back stage, flat screen TV monitors, wireless mike system, lighting patching system, complete rewiring of the audio and video systems, and upgrading of the stage lighting wiring, stage lighting mounting hardware. Geoff is keen to hear from anyone who is interested in becoming involved in the technical aspects of the theatre, from lighting and sound design, and operating shows, to rigging, installing and maintaining equipment. On-going training on this new equipment, and acquiring of skills will be a priority. Please feel free to contact him on or grholt@iinet.net.au BREAKING NEWS 2017 will be Garrick s 85th anniversary. To celebrate this event we thought a Garrick Recipe Book would be a fantastic way of recording for posterity so many of our members and their other talents. So please could you put your aprons and thinking caps on and come up with your favourite dishes. I shall be collecting all recipes so my contact details are in the directory inside cover page. Garrick Theatre is pleased to announce the launch of our new look website. The site still has the same address: Check in often to find out all about the productions and the latest news from the club. Club newsletters in glorious colour will now be available on the site. In the future, to save volunteers time and considerable expense, the Garrick would like to move towards having the newsletter delivered by . However, this will not suit everyone, so mail-outs will still be available. More to come on that subject. A longer term work in progress will be to transfer the reams of archives on to the website, so we can all enjoy the rich history of Western Australia's longest running community theatre. GOLDEN GAZZUNDER Once again I appeal to people to squeal on their directors, fellow actors, techies and crew. You need to give me tales of humiliation, horror, clumsiness, error, corpsing, outright hilarity etc. Sadly we had no nominations for 2014, which means you were all bloody perfect, are lacking in a sense of humour or scared to death of your director. Remember - Nothing is sacred. Rest assured that all snitches will remain anonymous* (*conditions and a nominal fee apply) GARRICK CLASSIFIEDS Wanted - Who likes working with a camera and would like to volunteer their talents? We need someone to be available to take photos of rehearsals at all stages of a production, sometimes at short notice, including full dress and tech. Also portrait pix for billboards etc. Garrick owns a decent camera so please give me a call if you would like to come on board.

7 GARRICK S GOLDEN YEARS FIFTY YEARS OF DRAMA For those of you lucky enough to have a copy of this wonderful History written and compiled by the late Meg & Noel Tanner, congratulations. This publication sold out many years ago. After discussions with Meg over the years, we decided that I should take on the next chapter, so to speak, so I am slowly gathering enough information in the archives to write the sequel. The Committee have discussed this and we feel that we should publish a second edition of the original to fill the gap. I have been in touch with the original publishing company but it has changed hands, and they no longer have the work in their data base. So we are currently about to embark on gathering quotes for re publishing. Meantime, perhaps you would like to register your interest in buying a copy when they are available. HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO US GARRICK THEATRE CLUB CELEBRATES 83 YEARS ON MAY 13TH THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS OF FULL LENGTH PLAYS FOR 2016 IS 30TH JUNE 2015 MILESTONE BADGES It was discussed at the last meeting that the theatre community is more transient these days. People tend to move around much more than in the past. So to be a member of a club for 10 years or more can be viewed as a much bigger milestone and quite an achievement. As a result we will be awarding 10 year badges at the next AGM. If you feel you qualify please register with Elaine our Secretary. GET WELL ANYONE WHO IS NOT FEELING WELL AT THE MOMENT
