4 th Stradivarius International Violin Competition (July 11th July 16th, 2016) University of Utah School of Music Salt Lake City, Utah, USA Junior Division Rules Updated 04/08/2016 Eligibility 1. The Stradivarius International Violin Competition Junior Division Category (hereafter referred to as the SIVC) is open to violinists only. Contestants must be between the ages of 12 and 18 years as of July 11 th, 2016. Persons under professional management are not eligible. Entry Procedures 2. Formal application must be mailed to: Stradivarius International Violin Competition C/O Charles W. Liu Fine Violins 7450 South State Street Midvale, UT 84047 U.S.A. All applications must be postmarked by April 15 th, 2016. 3. In addition to the application, the following items must be enclosed with the application package: a. Unedited high quality recordings on DVD and CD of all pieces selected and played by the contestant. Recordings must be in readable formats for the United States. Each piece must be on individual tracks. Unreadable discs will automatically disqualify the competitor. b. The entrance fee is $80.00 U.S. Dollars. US competitors may pay with a major credit card or send a check or money order payable to Stradivarius International Violin Competition. International competitors must pay with a credit card. We take Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express or an arrangement of secure transfer of funds. This entrance fee is nonrefundable. c. Copy of a birth certificate or similar official document proving date of birth. (i.e. driver s license, passport, etc.)

d. For tax purposes, we require the candidate s social security number for admittance into the SIVC. If the candidate is living in the United States, but not a legal citizen, proof of legal residency is required for admittance into the SIVC. If the candidate is not a citizen of the United States and will be applying from a different country the candidate must enter the United States legally (i.e. legal passport, visa, etc.). e. One high-quality full color digital headshot (on CD-ROM) or one glossy full color photograph (at least 9 x 12 cm) to be used in all publications and websites for the competition. f. Documents attesting to the personal qualifications of the candidate, including: 1. Two original references for the candidate from two prominent musicians ( the Referees ) attesting to the candidate s suitability to participate in the competition. One of the referees may be the candidate s current teacher. The referees must not have a past, present or pending family relationship with the candidate. 2. The candidate s biography. 3. Photocopies of any other documents which the candidate may wish to produce for consideration by the competition committee (for example diplomas, certificates, press materials, etc.). 4. The candidate must select all of his/her competition repertoire from the following list: a. Any TWO contrasting movements from the unaccompanied J.S. Bach Solo Sonatas and Partitas OR the Chaconne from the Partita No. 2 in D minor. b. Any TWO contrasting movements from a violin sonata by the following composers: 1. Beethoven i. Sonata I ii. Sonata IV iii. Sonata V iv. Sonata VII v. Sonata VIII vi. Sonata X 2. Bartok 3. Brahms 4. Copland 5. Debussy 6. Faure 7. Franck 8. Mozart 8. Prokofiev 9. Schumann 10. Hindemith 11. Britten 12. Saint Saens 13. Shostakovich

c. ONE show piece chosen by the competitor. (i.e. Sarasate s Zigeunerweisen, Ravel s Tzigane) d. ALL movements of any listed concerto by one of the following composers (Please reduce all tutti passages in the piano for the recording): 1. Barber 2. Bartok 3. Beethoven 4. Berg 5. Brahms 6. Bruch 7. Dvorak 8. Lalo 9. Mendelssohn 10. Paganini 11. Prokofiev 12. Saint Saens 13. Sibelius 14. Tschaikovsky 15. Wieniawski 16. Any major concerto from the 19 th or 20 th Century The performer must record all works with no audio editing. The CD, the DVD, and all accompanying cases must clearly display the name of performer, order, and length of the works contained in the recordings, and all works must be separated into individual tracks. Candidates should retain duplicates of the recordings as the SIVC will not return CDs or DVDs after the competition. 5. Candidates must play all pieces from memory, excluding chamber sonatas. 6. The SIVC will accept the candidate s application package providing the following requirements are met: a. The candidate is standing at a distance facing the video camera lens which ensures that he or she is clearly visible. b. The quality of sound on the DVD and CD is of a high fidelity to enable the competition committee and/or judges to make an accurate assessment of the competitor s performance. c. The DVD and CD recordings are of the same pieces, although the video and audio recordings do not have to be made simultaneously. d. The individual movements and works are separated into their own track. e. The video and audio recordings must have been recorded no longer than 6 months prior to their submission to the competition office. The date and location of the recordings must appear on the cover of the video and audio recordings. 7. The competition committee will accept a maximum of 15 competitors from the CD and DVD Pre-screening Round to advance into the semi-finals. The Semi- Final and Final Rounds of the competition will be held in Salt Lake City, Utah July 13-16, 2016.

8. The SIVC will notify the applicants who have been selected as competitors no later than May 15 th, 2016. The SIVC will inform all applicants electronically and/or in writing of selection or rejection. Candidates accepted as competitors must confirm their intention to participate in the competition by returning the confirmation form sent to competitors within two weeks of receipt. The SIVC must receive the confirmation form no later than two weeks following the initial notification. If a candidate declines the offer to participate, another candidate may be selected in their place. 9. Pieces other than those performed in the video and audio recordings can be included in the competitor s program for the Semi-Final Round and Final Round as long as the music chosen meets the requirements stated in section three. Any changes to the competitor s program must be finalized by May 15 th, 2016. After that date, no changes shall be permitted. Following reasonable negotiation with the competitor, the decision of the competition committee on this matter is final. 10. The competitors agree to the use of their names and/or photographs and/or biographies in the publications and on the websites of the Stradivarius International Violin Competition and Charles W. Liu Fine Violins. 11. The Stradivarius International Violin Competition authorities retain the right to reject any application that does not conform in its entirety to the competition regulations. 12. By signing the application, the applicant agrees to accept the rules and regulations of the Stradivarius International Violin Competition. Competition Procedures 13. All Junior Division competitors must be accompanied by a supervising adult (i.e. parent or legal guardian). If the adult accompanying the competitor is not a legal guardian, SIVC must have written consent from the legal guardian of the competitor. The SIVC is unable to provide a hotel stay for its competitors. Host families will be provided for those who request accommodations. Host families will provide room and transportation for the competitor and ONE parent/guardian. If the competitor is accompanied by more than one adult, they must find their own accommodations. Competitors and their guests may choose to stay at a hotel of their choice or in the University of Utah dorms at their own expense. Staying in the dormitory will allow competitors and their guests to have access to a free shuttle to and from Libby Gardner Hall. Please contact the SIVC for details. The SIVC will be happy to provide a list of local hotels, with possible event discounts. All requests for accommodations should be made no later than June 1 st, 2016. 14. Competitors may choose to bring their own accompanist or use one of the official accompanists of the SIVC. The SIVC will provide highly able piano accompanists for those competitors who do not wish to bring their own. The accompanist fees for the SIVC range between $75-$100 dollars per hour. Should the competitor choose to bring their own accompanist, they will be responsible for

all associated expenses. The SIVC will provide official rehearsal times, including a dress rehearsal in Libby Gardener Hall prior to the Semi-Final Round. Further rehearsal times will be scheduled as a candidate advances through to the Finals. 15. The Pre-screening Round of the competition will run as follows: The pool of candidates will be based exclusively on the application form, supporting documentation and materials, and the video and audio recordings provided by the candidates. The SIVC will consider no other material. A pre-selection jury, appointed by the competition committee, will undertake the selection process. The competitors will remain anonymous to the jury during the CD pre-screening. When a competitor makes it past the initial screening, the jury will listen and watch the DVD performance to verify identification of the performer. Following adjudication, the pre-selection jury will submit their recommendations to the competition committee for review. Competitors will be selected based on these recommendations. The decision of the competition committee on candidates selected for competition is final and there is no right of appeal to the decision. The recommendations of the pre-selection jury and the deliberations of the competition committee are not available for public scrutiny. 16. The SIVC Junior Division Competition will provide a panel of 5-7 judges. The SIVC has arranged to have a panel of five, highly-qualified judges to adjudicate at the July 2016 competition. If, because of extreme circumstances, a judge is unable to attend, the SIVC is not liable and is under no obligation to hire another judge. The panel of judges must be at least five in number, and the SIVC committee will find replacements as needed to fulfill this requirement. 17. The competition committee will accept a maximum of 15 competitors to participate in the Semi-Final Round. The SIVC will hold the Semi-Final Round in Salt Lake City, Utah on July 14 th & 15 th, 2016. The judges will allow up to 5 semi-finalists to advance to the Final Round. The names of those competitors who will participate in the finals will be announced at approximately 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 15 th, after the Semi-Final Round is completed. Competitors must be present at the announcement in order to advance to the Final Round. The 5 finalists will compete on Saturday, July 16 th. The winner will be announced that same evening at the Final Concert. 18. The Semi-Final Round (July 14 th & 15 th, 2016) of the competition will run as follows: A. Semi-Final Round programs are limited to 25 minutes each. They will be accompanied by piano where appropriate. This round will be hosted at Libby Gardner Hall at the University of Utah, School of Music. B. The competitor s order of appearance in the competition shall be determined alphabetically by the competitor s surname. The SIVC will use letters from the English alphabet.

C. The judges will score each competitor s performance separately, without any communication with other judges or the SIVC committee. The Semi-Final Round programs will include: Performance (July 14 th ) a. Two contrasting movements of any unaccompanied Bach Sonata or Partita b. One show piece of the competitor s choice Performance (July 15 th ) a. One movement of a Concerto from the required list b. Two movements from any violin sonata selected from the required list above (see section 22 for elimination procedures) 19. The Final Round (July 16 th, 2016) of the competition will run as follows: A. Five finalists will be chosen from the Semi-Final Round by the jury. The finalists will be announced at approximately 7:00p.m. on July 15 th, 2016 at Libby Gardner Hall. Competitors MUST BE PRESENT or they will be automatically eliminated. After the announcement, the five finalists will draw numbers to determine the order in which they will play in the Final Round. B. The Final Round program will be a full Concerto from the required list in section 4d. C. The Final Round will be accompanied by the piano, and hosted at Libby Gardner Hall in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Saturday, July 16th 2016. (see section 21 for ranking procedures) 20. All competitors must register in person at the SIVC information booth at the University of Utah on Tuesday, July 12th before 6:00pm. At the time of registration, the competitor will receive a detailed schedule of their rehearsal and performance times as well as activities and concerts. All competitors will have a scheduled rehearsal and a dress rehearsal time in Libby Gardner Hall with their accompanists prior to any performances. Rehearsals will begin on July 13 th. If a competitor misses their allotted time for rehearsal, there will be no makeup times. NO EXCEPTIONS. 21. The SIVC will hold the opening ceremony of the competition at the University of Utah at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, July 13th, 2016. All competitors must attend the opening ceremony or they will be disqualified from the competition. It is at the opening ceremony that the competitors will draw lots for their times as well as be introduced to the judges. 22. Elimination from the rounds shall proceed as follows: a. The jury will not discuss with each other the scoring of the competition. Competitors will be scored and ranked by each judge individually and separately. b. The jury will select 5 competitors from the 15 original competitors in the Semi-Final Round to compete in the Final Round. The judges will score each

performer separately. The 5 competitors with the highest scores will advance to the Final Round. c. The combination of the jury s scores will determine the rank of the 5 competitors from the Final Round as Winners first, second, third, fourth, and fifth. Prizes will be awarded for all Winners. d. The final jury will establish the ranking of the final 5 Winners, but shall not disclose that order until the end of the concert on Saturday, July 16th. e. The decisions of the Jury in these respects are final and the competitor shall be permitted no appeal. f. Following the completion of the competition, the competitors eliminated shall have the right to discuss any aspect of the competitor s personal performance in the competition with any member of the jury. The competitor is not obliged to have such discussions. 23. Competitors are not permitted to speak to any member of the jury for the duration of their participation in the competition (or after their elimination) except at the conclusion of the competition as provided in Rule 22f above. 24. Competitors are not permitted to take instruction and/or coaching for violin from any person for the duration of their participation in the competition, commencing on July 11 th, 2016. 25. The Semi Final and Final Rounds of the competition are open to the public. 26. The final jury of the competition will award first, second, third, fourth, and fifth prizes. The top three competitors will be asked to play at the Final Concert. The Winners are required to perform at the Final Concert in order to receive their awards. All five competitors must be present at the Final Concert or their awards will be forfeited. All eliminated competitors must be present as well. The performers will not be informed of their rank until the public announcement is made. The SIVC will announce the results at the conclusion of the Final Concert on Saturday July 16 th, 2016. The jury is entitled to absolute discretion not to award any prize or prizes. 27. We place these conditions of acceptance on the 1 st place Junior Division Winner: a. Perform at the Final Concert of the SIVC on July 16, 2016. b. If requested, the Junior Division Winner will be available to perform at the opening ceremony of the subsequent edition of the SIVC. c. First Prize Winner agrees to perform with the Utah Symphony as part of their Deer Valley Concert Series in the summer of 2017, and also the China Hunan Symphony Orchestra in its 2017 2018 music season. d. Repertoire for the Utah Symphony and China Hunan Symphony Orchestra performance will be mutually agreed upon between the concert s conductor and the Winner. If no mutual agreement is made, and the concert is therefore cancelled or postponed, the SIVC will be under no further obligation to provide performance opportunities or any correspondence between the two parties. All arrangements will be made strictly between the Orchestras and the Winner. e. Winner agrees to furnish photographs, biographical materials, and the usual printed matter necessary for the adequate promotion of these concerts. If the SIVC, Utah Symphony or China Hunan Symphony Orchestra requires

more materials than what was given in the original application, the Winner will be notified personally. The Utah Symphony and China Hunan Symphony Orchestra shall have access to all these materials and may use them for the above-mentioned purpose. f. In the event that the performance of any of these agreements on the part of the SIVC, Utah Symphony, China Hunan Symphony Orchestra, or the Winner, shall be prevented by act of God, physical disability, the acts or regulations of public authorities or labor unions, labor difficulties, strike, lack of funds, civil tumult, war, epidemic, interruption or delay of transportation service or any other cause beyond its control, both parties to this contract shall be respectively relieved of their obligations hereunder with respect to the performances so prevented. Soloists must receive 24 hours advance notice of cancellation or payment will be due for that specific performance. g. Winner agrees to furnish all information necessary for the procurement of an O-1 work visa from the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services upon request from the Utah Symphony. h. Upon completion of the performance, the Utah Symphony will make arrangements with the winner for a performance in their upcoming season. Winners will receive no compensation from the Utah Symphony. The SIVC will provide hotel accommodations for up to two people/one room during your stay for the performance in Utah. The competitor is responsible for their own travel expenses to Salt Lake City. i. Regarding the performance with the China Hunan Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra will make arrangements with the winner for a performance in their 2017-2018 music season. Winners will receive no compensation from the Hunan Symphony Orchestra. The competitor is responsible for his/her own flight into a major city in China such as Beijing or Shanghai. SIVC will then be responsible for the inland travel to Changsha where the Hunan Symphony Orchestra is located. During the solo appearance with Hunan Symphony Orchestra, SIVC may arrange some performances in other major Music Conservatories, such as the China Central Conservatory of Music or the Shanghai Conservatory of Music etc. While in China, SIVC will be responsible for the hotel accommodations directly related to the performance(s). The competitor is responsible for any other unrelated expenses and travel/ sightseeing. 30. The organizer is entitled to make audio and video recordings of all performances and other events during the competition and to use them in connection therewith. The organizer shall record all performances and other events in part or in whole and shall broadcast them live and/or later and/or pass these recordings on to other broadcasters. Competition participants shall not be entitled to claim any remuneration for these recordings. 31. SIVC holds the privilege of modifying these rules at any time before June 8 th, 2016. After this date, all rules are final. The SIVC also reserves the privilege of making minor schedule changes during the course of the competition if it becomes necessary.

32. Awards and Prizes 1 st Place Winner: $7,500 cash, Solo appearance with the Utah Symphony Solo appearance with the China Hunan Symphony Orchestra 2 nd Place Winner: $5,000 cash 3 rd Place Winner: $3,000 cash 4 th Place Winner: $2,000 cash 5 th Place Winner: $1,000 cash All participants will receive a certificate detailing their success.
