February 1 st, 2013 Dear parent/guardian: We are pleased that your child is interested in participating in this year s SuperFly Filmmaking Experience hosted by LONGHOUSE MEDIA in partnership with the Seattle International Film Festival. The gathering will be held on site at a Coast Salish Reservation in Washington and finish in Seattle on Capital Hill. We will begin with orientation, a hosted dinner, and group planning/storyboarding on May 30 th, 2013. We will be joined by adult mentors and guest artists for the welcome/introduction, icebreaking activities, and a discussion centered around filmmaking as a tool for youth empowerment, artistic expression, and cross-cultural dialogue. Youth will begin full-scale production/filmmaking Friday morning; splitting into five production groups to shoot and edit a pre-determined script. Teaching artists and media educators will mentor the participants through the process. Youth will have a late night editing Friday, and submit their final cuts Saturday morning. Their films will premiere on Saturday, June 1 st at the Seattle International Film Festival at 4:00 p.m. in Seattle at the historic Harvard Exit. The workshop portion is covered by a full scholarship for the selected filmmakers; Longhouse Media will provide all meals, equipment, and instruction for youth participants (we may be able to help with transportation upon request).
