Instruments are classified or grouped into Families.

These are my awesome children, Kelley and Jake! How are they alike? * Cute pug nose! Kelley * Hair color. Jake * Beautiful smile! * Sound of voice.

Instruments are classified into families based on things they have in common. 1. The materials from which they are made, 2. The manner in which sound is produced on the instruments, 3. The ways the instruments produce different pitches, 4. The sound quality or timbre of the instruments (voice), 5. The function of the instrument within the band or orchestra.

Pitched or Tuned Percussion Chimes

Pitched or Tuned Percussion Chimes Some percussion instruments can play melodies or tunes. The musician playing these instruments could play a tune on these instruments. The long pipes on the chimes vibrate slowly and produce low pitches. The short pipes vibrate faster, producing higher pitches.

Percussion

Percussion These pipes are hung from the frame using fishing line. This enables the pipes to vibrate freely. The long pipes on the chimes vibrate slowly and produce low pitches. The short pipes vibrate faster, producing higher pitches.

Pitched or Tuned Percussion

Pitched or Tuned Percussion

Pitched or Tuned Percussion This bright student looked on the Internet and found an article that told her exactly how long to cut each bar on her Xylophone to make each of the pitches. It was perfectly tuned and she could play numerous songs on her two octaves.

Percussion

Percussion The bars on a xylophone must have something like heavy felt or rubber tubing between the bars and the wooden frames. This is necessary so that the pipes or bars can vibrate freely and make a great sound. For the same reason, the holes at the end of the bars must be bigger than whatever you use to hold it on to the bar.

Rubber Gloves Drum heads should be tight in order to make a great sound. Ladies rubber gloves make excellent drum heads and are very durable.

Zip Ties Zip ties are the best to use when attempting to get a drum head to stay tight. Rubber bands stretch out or break resulting in a loose drum head. Zip ties are strong and durable. They can be purchased at any hardware store or other stores like Wal-mart.

Percussion Do not turn in one drum! Your instrument must make two or more pitches. One drum will only make one pitch. Large drums will vibrate slower and produce lower pitches. Small drums will vibrate faster, producing higher pitches.

Percussion Do not turn in one triangle! Your instrument must make two or more pitches. One triangle will only make one pitch. Large triangles will vibrate slower and produce lower pitches. Small triangle will vibrate faster, producing higher pitches.

Percussion Do not turn in one maraca. Your instrument must make two or more pitches. One maraca will only make one pitch. Maracas filled with heavy materials such as dried beans will vibrate slower and produce lower pitches. Maracas filled with light materials such as rice will vibrate faster, producing higher pitches.

Percussion Bellano This inventor attached bells to the strings. One key is attached to a string with large bells. The second key is hooked to a string with medium sized bells. The third key is connected to a string with small bells. His instrument makes 3 different pitches.

This student used more than 200 keys of different sizes and weights. The keys are suspended (hung) from the frame with fishing line.
