August 2011 www.folkproject org New Jersey s Premier Acoustic Music and Dance Organization Hear Ye, Hear Ye! happens only rarely, but sometimes the Folk Project finds a reason to update our Constitution or By-Laws. Making such a change is a two-step process. 1. First we need to announce the change to the general membership (which is what we re doing here). 2. Then we need to vote on it at two successive meetings. If the change is approved by a two-thirds majority of the Board, as well as by a simple majority of the general members who take the time to weigh in, it can be put into effect. The change we re considering has to do with the replacement of Trustees, who normally serve three-year terms. The Constitution now says that mid-term replacements will be appointed by the Board and serve the remaining term of the person they re replacing. However, Trustees are really supposed to be elected by the general members, not appointed by the board. So we intend to change the language to stipulate that mid-term replacements will serve until the next general election (which occurs in December of each year), at which time they ll be approved by the general membership. (The mid-term replacements could still be voted in at that time, if appropriate: Trustees are not term-limited.) If you d like more information, Webmaster John Lamb has prepared a briefing page at http:// folkproject.org/trusteeamendment.shtml, If you d like to express an opinion, either pro or con, just drop a note to secretary@folkproject.org. It s democracy in action, baby! The Minstrel August 2011 Acoustic Concert Series presented by Fri., 8/5: Mara Levine & Caroline Cutroneo with Bill Buttner Mara Levine s & Caroline Cutroneo s strong suit is their voices: rich and strong and blended in gorgeous harmonies. They sing original, traditional and contemporary folk with a dash of blues. Mara has been a welcome part of the Folk Project scene for the past two years. Audience members so inclined will find plenty of opportunity to add their own voices to their choruses and find harmonies of their own. They will be joined on stage by others in their circle of musical friends for a grand evening of beautiful music. Opening act Bill Buttner is a singer/songwriter from Marlboro NY who has impressed us at his numerous appearances at the Minstrel s Open Stages. His songs are best described as folk/ Americana with his major influences being Steve Earle, Springsteen, and Bob Dylan. Fri., 8/12: A Folk Project Special Concert Aztec Two-Step Celebrating their 40th anniversary this year, the venerable duo AZTEC TWO-STEP are true icons of the post 60 s folk-rock genre. Rex Fowler and Neal Shulman s music is filled with poetic image-laden lyrics, close harmony singing, and sparkling guitar work. They ve not stopped writing, and their new work is as exciting as their classic Persecution & Restoration of Dean Moriarty that graced the FM airways in 1972. They also pay homage to their predecessor harmony duo, Simon & Garfunkel with some great renditions of their music. Please note for this Special Concert only, tickets will be $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Fri., 8/19: Open Stage Note: Not the usual 2nd Friday. This is an opportunity for all acoustic musicians to perform a 15-minute set on our stage, and for the audience to be treated to a diverse collection of acoustic musicians. We ve often seen previews of our regular scheduled acts for the first time at Open Stage. For information on how to secure a performance slot, call 973-335-9489, or visit the Open Stage page on the Folk Project web site, www.folkproject.org. Fri., 8/26: Old-Timers Night at the Minstrel In celebration of the longevity and legacy of The Folk Project we present Old-Timers Night at the Minstrel. All performers taking the stage for this very special Folk Project Family event have been active members for at least 25 years! Featuring the first set by Frosty Morning in more than a decade! With performances by Jim Gartner, Frank and Hank, Rick Thomas, Mike Agranoff and many more. Hosted by Old-Timer and MC Jim King, this show will feature extra special goodies for the break and will be a fund-raiser for the Folk Project. UPCOMING 9/2: A Farewell Concert by Dugan s Hooligans; 9/9: Open Stage; 9/16: Toby Walker with openers Jean Scully & Rachel Streich; 9/23: Ilusha Tsinadze; 9/30: Closed for the Folk Project Fall Festival; 10/7: The Jeremy Kittel Band The Minstrel is an acoustic music concert series run by the Folk Project, a non-profit folk music and arts organization. We use the facilities of the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship, 21 Normandy Heights Road, Morristown, NJ. We hold shows almost every Friday, year round, and the second Friday of the month is usually an open stage/audition night. The music we present is folk music in its broadest sense. That is, in addition to traditional American and ethnic folk music (in its purist definition), we welcome music of contemporary, primarily acoustic songwriters, and other types of music more folkie in attitude than in content. Shows start at 8pm; dress is casual. We serve coffee, teas, and baked goods. There is no alcohol or tobacco on the premises. Admission is inexpensive; on our regular Friday concerts we ask $7.00 on your way in, and, if you feel the show was worth it, an additional amount at your discretion on the way out, which goes to supplement what we pay the feature performer. Children under 12 are free. For travel information, or information on shows call 973 335 9489 or visit our website at www.folkproject.org. A Reuest For Participation In The Political Process On the front page of this Newsletter is an article concerning a motion before the Folk Project Board to amend our Constitution. I believe that making any amendment to the Constitution is a big deal and should not be taken lightly so as a Board member I would like to encourage you all to participate in this process. From the FP Constitution: This Constitution may be amended by a two-thirds majority of the Directors at two successive meetings after the amendment has been announced to the general membership and approved by a simple majority of those responding. This means that before the Board can vote on this amendment you get to vote! You can read the other article for the specifics of the amendment and to find a link to the portion of the Board minutes during which we discussed the issue. Thanks Folkies. Scooter, Chair of Minstrel Staffing th Saturday, July 30 2011 at 8PM Festival: A Musical Weekend that s the Best of All! Our Fall Festival has a superb concert lineup, a beefed-up workshop schedule, and great new opportunities to make and share music. The results are inconclusive at this point, but it appears the answer is yes. In the course of his extensive research into the future of technology, he has stumbled upon a little-known web thing called facebook. Apparently, there are those who think this will be a booming community and may even make money some day. I, I mean he, is here to debunk such balderdashery. Why, you, the second person who is not me or even he or she, may ask? 1. Look at the name. Who reads books anymore? Anything with the word book in it is the past, not the future. 2. Why would people want to communicate with others by typing into a device, when they could pick up the phone and call someone? Ridiculous. 3. Who wants to see someone s face anyway? Maybe it should be called belowtheneckbook. Except take out the book part. Belowtheneckagram has a nice ring to it. 4. The money would be better spent making dulcimer strings. That s the business of the future! Pelvis Burlapp, August, 2006 7

Folk Project Board Meeting July Board Meeting: The Summary The monthly meeting of the Folk Project Board was called to order at 8:07 PM on July 5th, at the home of Ed and Robin Roffman. Present were Lois DeRitter, Nancy Dugan, Gloria Freidman, Jim Gartner, Allan Kugel and Ed Roffman (Trustees), Mike Agranoff, Carl Croce, Scooter Ferguson, Nancy Kelner, Sandie Reilly, Chris Riemer, Pam Robinson, Bob Safranek, Rachel Streich, Rick Thomas and Jean Scully (Other Board Members), and Kelvin Domovs, Diane Goodheart, Evelyn Maurer, Mary Beattie Patrick, Robin Roffman, Mark Schaffer and Ellen Schwartz (Guests). Also note that while Ms. Schwartz began the evening as a guest, she ended it as a Trustee! Absent were Connie Crawford, Elizabeth Lachowicz, Bob McNally, Bobbie Rosengarten and Robin Schaffer. The minutes of the June meeting were approved, with two minor corrections, and Treasurer Rachel Streich let us know that we remain on solid financial ground. The largest portion of the discussion this evening went to a proposal to revise the Folk Project constitution as it pertains to the mid-term replacement of Trustees. (You ll find more information on that elsewhere in the newsletter.) There was a lot to be said, both pro and con, and it ended with a very close vote in favor of initiating the revision process. That is, we didn t approve the change itself (which is more complicated), but we agreed to put the wheels in motion. Stay tuned for further developments. In an unrelated development, the board appointed Ellen Schwartz as a new Trustee, which brings us back to a full complement of nine Trustees, following some recent resignations. We also got to meet Diane Goodheart, who together with Pat McDonnell, has taken on the job of preparing our 2012 grant application for the Arts Council of the Morris Area. Otherwise, the committees told us that: The canopy acuired by Community Services for Wayne Day is currently stored in Ed Roffman s garage, but chair Pat Brangs would like folks to remember it s there for any activity that might make use of it. New Jersey Monthly is going to do a feature article on the Folk Project in the August issue, which is published in mid July. Chair Nancy Kelner thanked all those who are engaged in supporting Publicity s work, but could always some more volunteers. Get in touch with her at publicity@folkproject.org. Everything is on target for the coming Fall Festival, which is being supported by a uniue publicity campaign aimed at the folks who play at open mike events around New Jersey. The committee feels this community would be a natural audience for us, given that they like to perform and like to share. Merchandising will have something new for the Minstrel Birthday Party, and intends to keep generating limited edition merchandise rather than going for one giant run of something that takes a year to sell out. They re also looking for volunteer artists to help execute these promo items, so if you re interested, contact publicity@folkproject.org. ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 9:50. Next month s meeting is August 2nd, at the home of Mark and Robin Schaffer, in Rockaway. Please remember that board meetings are open to all general members. If you d like to sit in, send a note to secretary@folkproject. org to get the details. 12 Good of the Order/Community News This is a place to share news about memorable events and challenges you have faced in the past month with your Folk Project Community. Please send items to Eddie Roffman, eroffman@optonline.net. Elizabeth Lachowicz had a great trip to Chicago with her family and all are doing well. She went on a vacation to Mexico with her sister, Frances. She loved the time they spent together but they do not recommend trips to Mexico during hurricane season! Pam Robinson and Bob Safranek enjoyed a great early summer trip to West Virginia. Pam spent time relaxing while Bob did a lot of hiking. Upon return home, they feel well rested and well fed. Siobhan Scully graduated High School as a member of the National Honor Society. She is looking forward to studying horse-breeding at Delaware Valley College. Alan Kugel s presence at the July FP board meeting was only slightly affected by jet-lag, due to his return the previous day from a conference in Montpellier, France. He and Cecilia Rowedder had a great time on the other side of the pond, even dancing together Sur le ponte D Avignon (actually under the bridge, not uite on it) during their travels. As Dugan s Hooligan s prepares for their upcoming Farewell Concert at the Minstrel on September 2, Sharlys Leszczuk Dugan is expressing a desire to form her own band. Sharlys is seeking musicians to build a new band with players of her own age, Without the old people. We can t wait to hear! Pat and husband Paul Brangs are spending a week in July, developing their small craft sailing skills at the Appalachian Mountain Club, Fire Island Cabin Branch Sailing School. They ll be sailing every day while enjoying Fire Island campfires and cookouts in the evenings. Mark and Robin Schaffer held two graduation parties in June for two of their daughters. Skylar Seidenberg graduated with high honors from Morris Hills High School, while Chelsea Seidenberg earned a Masters Degree in Math Education. Skylar s graduation party was actually a music party with songs played by the girls and their friends. Mark is also celebrating his return from a week at Jay Ungar s Western Swing Ashokan Fiddle & Dance Camp. Mark reports that it was a great experience; as good as it has been for him in years past. Thanks & Leftovers Eddie and Robin Roffman thank everyone who came, for making the FP July 4th party so wonderful. Thank you to all who volunteered at the grill and especially those who helped to clean up at the end. Here s what was left over after the party: three camping style folding chairs, one grey that says Coleman, one green that says Boy Scouts, and one red that doesn t say anything; also there s a pair of Foster Grant sunglasses. Please call us at (973) 328-7742; we ll make arrangements to get your stuff back to you. 13
