Introduction Introduction Caterpillar Engine Vision System displays information for Caterpillar electronically controlled marine engines. The Engine Vision System displays current engine and transmission data, trip data, historical data, maintenance and diagnostic information, and troubleshooting information. It can also interface with vessel global positioning systems to display vessel position and speed. A single Engine Vision System can simultaneously display data for two or three engines. Each engine s ECM is connected via Cat Data Link to Engine Vision. Features Touch screen technology provides fast, easy access to desired information Function keys mounted on the housing below the screen provide additional access to desired information The high resolution, multi-colored LCD screen provides superior readability in all lighting conditions Displays current engine operating parameters Continually updates engine historical data Global positioning display with GPS Interface Module Graphic displays of critical operating parameters Trip and lifetime histograms for engine speed and load Trip and lifetime totals for engine operating hours, load factors, and fuel rates Diagnostic information Maintenance information 1

Configuration and Power-Up Configuration The One Time Configuration menu will appear when the Engine Vision display is first powered up. Select the appropriate engine family and confirm the selection. The Engine Vision display will prompt the operator to cycle the power to the display (shut the power off then turn the power on). When the engine family is confirmed, the Engine Vision display deletes the One Time Configuration menu. For all successive power-ups, the main gauge screen will be the first screen displayed. NOTE: If the wrong family is selected, the correct engine configuration can be uploaded using the latest software update. The factory software is the only software that gives the One Time Configuration menu. WARNING: ONE-TIME CONFIGURATION SELECT 3176B SELECT 3176C/3196 SELECT 3406E SELECT 3400C SELECT 3500 Power-Up Each time Engine Vision is powered up, the system will go through a boot sequence. This sequence takes approximately one minute. The Main gauge screen will appear when the system is ready for operation. 2

System Configuration Screen The System Configuration Screen (Accessible only by the function key) Pressing the system configuration function key will display a screen from which the units of the engine parameter values and the display mode of the gauge screens can be changed. The options that are currently displayed will appear as white letters on a blue background. System Configuration U. S. METRIC DAY NIGHT This screen indicates that U. S. units are displayed and the gauge screens are in DAY mode. 5

Gauge Screens Gauge Screens The gauge screens display engine and vessel information in one or more of the following configurations: 1) Analog gauge 2) Digital gauge 3) Bar gauge The gauge screens and the navigation screen have an analog tachometer with digital rpm readout or a digital tachometer for each engine. Vessel speed is displayed on a bar graph in knots on most gauge and navigation screens. All gauge screens have a indicator and indicator as well as different buttons to move to other screens, such as, or,,. The main gauge screen also has a U. S. and a NIGHT button, a and indicator. 3500B Engines The main gauge screen has a (start/stop engines) button in the center. Touch this button to select a screen that displays current engine speed, position of the control switch, status of the remote start switch, and remaining time for cooldown. Touch the button at the bottom of the screen to select a menu with Start Port, Stop Port, Start Starboard, Stop Starboard, Start Port and Starboard, and Stop Port and Starboard. Touch one of these buttons and a screen will appear to confirm your choice. Gauge Displays The outside of each gauge face has a green area that shows the normal operating range, a yellow area for caution zone, and a red area for warning zone outside the normal operating range. Below each gauge is a window that displays the digital value of that engine parameter. When the needle is in the normal range, the digital readout will be black with white numbers. 6

Gauge Screens When the needle is in the caution zone, the digital readout will be yellow with black numbers. This indicates that a high temperature or low pressure limit is about to be reached. When the needle is in the warning zone, the digital readout will be red with black numbers. Inside the gauge face, the words Warning, Low Oil Pressure will appear below the gauge label Oil Press, as an example. This indicates that the low pressure limit has been reached. If the word Error appears in the digital readout in red with white letters, the Electronic Control Module (ECM) has detected an invalid signal from the respective sensor. If the fault is intermittent, the indicator will turn red for each new occurrence. Touch the indicator to view a screen that has Port Active and Logged Diagnostics. Touch the button to view the Starboard Active and Logged Diagnostics. Press again to view Center Active and Logged Diagnostics. The diagnostic screen contains: Message Number Fault Code Description Occurrence Count (number of times the fault has occurred) First hour logged (engine hours when the fault first occurred) Last hour logged (engine hours when the fault last occurred) Status (active fault or logged fault) The most recent codes will be at the top of the screen in order of occurrence by engine hours with the active diagnostic codes displayed first. 14

Diagnostic Indicator Touch the Message Number to view a screen with a more detailed description of each respective diagnostic fault code, and information on the Possible Performance Effect and Recommended Action. Note: Not every diagnostic has more detailed descriptions. The operator must use judgement to determine further action from what is displayed for Recommended Action. 15
