CARL ROHRS Ghosts of calligraphy & calligraphic type Carl Rohrs has been a lettering artist and signpainter in Santa Cruz, California since 1977, an instructor of Lettering & Typography and Graphic Design at Cabrillo College since 1984, and has been teaching in workshops and at calligraphy conferences since 1986 in the U.S., Canada, Europe, England, Japan, South Africa and Australia. From 1989 to 1992, he was the editor/designer of Alphabet, the Journal of San Francisco s Friends of Calligraphy. Contemporary calligraphy is a combination of thought, touch, technique -- and inspiration. So, we ll be exploring some of the specific, specialized techniques for making modern letterforms with flat pen, flat brush, pointed brush and ruling pen. At the same time there will be a thorough and loving introduction to the work of my favorite 20th Century calligraphers and script type designers. The class workbooks will virtually be a massive gathering of their unusual letters, the writing and sketches that led to some of the most distinctive type of the 20th century, which will supply us with a forest of inspiration for using the moves that will be covered. We will be interpreting and stealing from the following gentlemen -- Ray DaBoll, Walter Brudi, Roger Excoffon, Albert Kapr, Rudolf Koch, Alfred Linz, Oldrich Meinhart, Herbert Post, Heinz Schumann, Ernst Schneidler, Villu Toots, Georg Trump, Hildegarde Korger and many more. Most of them were type designers, most of them were teachers, most of them were calligraphers of startling originality. Take it from someone who loves to be startled. These men came up with new ways of using hands centuries-old as well as their own completely original styles that have been hiding from you for 50 years and more -- some that retain the marvelous feeling of their time and some that look as fresh as today. We ll combine things we like from their work with those modern calligraphy moves to expand our own repertoire of styles and flavor, and help us find our own unique paths to our writing and ultimately, perhaps to our own unique typefaces. What we want to do is use some of the most original and powerful writing from the nooks and crannies of the twentieth century to help us to discover our own vision and style in the twenty-first. ADVANCED LEVEL Cost: 400,00
EWAN CLAYTON Inspirations from Hans-Joachim Burgert Hans Joachim Burgert was a painter, sculptor, musician, graphic artist and poet. Working all his life in Berlin and remaining unknown in the English speaking world until his visit to Britain in 1989 Burgert has turned out to be the crucial influence in modernizing western calligraphy at the beginning of the twenty-first century. In this workshop we will explore his ideas on letterform and composition and how these can guide us in our own work. Ewan wrote the first article on Burgert s calligraphic theories in English, a piece that Burgert liked and had printed in the catalogue for his retrospective exhibition at the National Library of Luxembourg. This workshop is guaranteed to help you see calligraphy in a new way. INTERMEDIATE LEVEL Cost: 370,00 (300,00 for students*) Ewan Clayton enjoys working with his fellow calligraphers whatever their level of experience from beginners to experts. He grew up near Ditchling, Sussex, home to the calligrapher Edward Johnston. An early friendship with Irene Wellington encouraged him to join the course at the Roehampton Institute run by Ann Camp for whom he then worked as a teaching assistant. Today Ewan is part-time Professor in Design at the University of Sunderland. He also makes commissions, curates exhibitions, and writes about calligraphy. In 2015 his book Il filo d'oro della scrittura, a history of writing was published by Bolatti Boringheri.
GIOVANNI DE FACCIO Italics and the freedom of a gesture Giovanni de Faccio was born in Italy in 1966 and he lives in Austria. He has been a professional calligrapher for 27 years and in 1991 he was one of the founders of the ACI. If you are interested in improving your italics this is a course for you. From our starting point of the standard cursive writing of the Renaissance we shall develop dynamic, gestural and expressive writing. No particular artistic merits are required of participants. This course is aimed at discovering the creative resources that each one of us possesses. It is based on examples, from single strokes to composition of the page, practical help and exercises with the purpose of rediscovering the joy of writing harmonious, rhythmic and contrasting letters. Writing for pleasure, writing for readers, writing as an aesthetic quest in search of the soul. Writing to feel good. FOR BEGINNERS AND WHOEVER WISHES TO GAIN A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING Cost: 370,00 (300,00 for students*) Besides his work as a teacher he is well known for his dedication to calligraphy and typography. Rialto.df is the most popular of his font designs. He also cuts letters in stone and teaches calligraphy and type design at the New Design University in St.Pölten in Austria.
ANNA SCHETTIN Calligraphy from the beginning: minuscules and Roman capitals The perfect harmony of the CIRCLE and the SQUARE is the core of this calligraphy course which is dedicated to Roman minuscules and capitals and their historical development from the Roman Empire to the Renaissance. First we shall study the Carolingian script and learn how to write it with a broad pen following the principles laid down by Edward Johnston. Following this we shall analyse the skeletal structure of the Capitali Quadrata made up of circles, rectangles and triangles and with the same geometrical approach we shall tackle the less complex minuscules. Using pencils and a rotis pen we shall study the capitals first and then the minuscules, with special attention to the composition of texts and spatial relationships between written strokes. We shall then return to the broad nibbed pen analyzing historical and contemporary variations of detail as a starting point for personal versions of the alphabet. This course is for those who WISH TO MAKE A START IN CALLIGRAPHY. Participants will be instructed in use of tools and materials. The course is also open to those who already have some experience and wish to strengthen their abilities while working on a personal project. FOR BEGINNERS AND WHOEVER WISHES TO GAIN A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING Cost: 370,00 (300,00 for students*) Anna Schettin first came into contact with calligraphy in 1986 and since then she has continuously developed her formal and expressive writing in many courses in Italy and abroad. Her work as a calligrapher has also benefitted from experience in typography, printing, engraving and bookbinding. She has contributed to the spread of calligraphy in Italy as a teacher and also through her work in the Associazione Calligrafica Italiana, of which she was a founder in 1991.
