10th Annual Stetson University Saxophone Workshop July 7-12, 2014 Congratulations on your decision to attend the 10th annual Saxophone Workshop at Stetson University. We are looking forward to a wonderful clinic. Throughout the website, you will find the following: directions to Stetson University, a what to bring list, Rules and Regulations, a tentative schedule of the week, a medical release form, a media release form, and audition placement music for the first day of the workshop. Please read everything carefully. If you registered for the camp, and did not receive an electronic version of this packet via e-mail, that means we do not have the correct e-mail address on file. Contact us via email to confirm this information. The remainder of your tuition is due by the first day of the workshop (July 7). Total tuition is $515.00. (Most of you who sent in the minimum $100 deposit would now be responsible for the remaining $415.00) However, all remaining tuition must be paid by credit card or cash on or before July 7. Remember that you may pay any tuition using a credit card on the Stetson School of Music Website. When you check in you will also need to bring your medical release form (notarized) and media release form. Registration check-in will be on Monday, July 7th at HATTER HALL, which is the main dormitory for the workshop. Check-in will begin at 8:00am, and end at 11:30am. Parents should plan to leave immediately after students move their belongings into their dorm room. Prior to July 1st, registered campers should fill out the electronic audition check-in form from the workshop website: www.stetsonsaxophoneworkshop.org Placement auditions will occur also in HATTER HALL. Students will be assigned a placement audition time immediately upon check-in. Placement auditions will begin at 8:30am and conclude around 1pm. Students may use their dorm room to warm up in preparation for their placement audition. Students will be escorted by counselors to lunch at the Carlton Union Building (CUB) around lunch time when they do not have a scheduled audition. We will have our first student meeting at 2pm (bring your instrument) in Feasel/McMahon Hall. Jazz placement auditions will occur in Presser Hall immediately following this meeting. See Music Activities. If you have any question, please contact the Stetson University School of Music 822-8950 or the workshop coordinator: Mr. Williamson - jawillia@stetson.edu - (407) 782-2729 We are looking forward to seeing you this Summer Sincerely, Jeremy Williamson, Workshop Coordinator

WHAT TO BRING *Your Saxophone(s). *At least 1 box of Vandoren or Hemke reeds (no harder than a 3.5 & no softer than a 2.5). *Current method books, solos and ensembles you are working on. *Your OWN metronome and tuner if you own either/both. *Any reed or cleaning supplies and/or music related to instrument. *Please bring working reeds. (you may want to bring reeds for more than one type of saxophone in case you may be assigned to play another saxophone). *Students who stated they can bring a Tenor, Soprano, or Baritone Saxophone may do so for themselves or a member of their assigned chamber group to use. *Please have all instruments clearly labeled with student s/ or school names. *Chamber assignments will be made following the auditions on the first day of the workshop. *Folding music stand. DO NOT forget a stand Please try to borrow one if you do not have one of your own. *Remember to put your name on the stand. *Casual clothes, athletic wear, swimwear, pajamas, robe, sweater. *Raincoat or umbrella.....(it WILL rain). *DRESS CLOTHES FOR THE CHAMBER CONCERT & FINAL CONCERT. (Does not need to be a school uniform or all black). *Towels, washcloths, towel, soap, toiletries, sunscreen, sheets, pillow, blanket (dorms are often cold at night). *NOTE: Beds are slightly longer than standard twin - an extra top sheet works better than a fitted bottom sheet if you do not have an extra long set. *Spending money ($30 should be plenty) for snacks, souvenirs, etc. *All admissions and meals are pre-paid in the tuition/dorm fee. PLEASE DO NOT BRING LARGE AMOUNT OF CASH. *There will be a local store at the School of Music for any accessory needs within the first 2 days of the workshop. *Workshop T-shirts are available on the first day of camp for $16. If you pre-ordered ($12) a t-shirt, be sure not to count it as part of the $100 deposit. Recommended: All students are recommended to get Daily Studies for All Saxophones by Trent Kynaston, published by Belwin/Alfred. This is mainly a scale book, but also has other exercises and a comprehensive extension to most fingering charts. Students entering 7-8 grade are recommended to have Rubank Advanced Method for Saxophone, Volume 1. Students entering 9-10 grade are recommended to have Rubank Advanced Method for Saxophone, Volume 2. Students entering 11-12 grade are recommended to get 48 Famous Studies by Ferling, Southern Music Press. We will be coaching students for FBA All-State audition music and the material will come from these books. Also, many counties use one of the All-State exercises for their All-County auditions. Please remember to use the grade level you will be in NEXT YEAR If you are attending the workshop from outside of Florida, please feel free to bring the All-State audition material for your state.

Regulations and Things to Note e e e e e e e e e e e e e e Students are expected to be at all events unless officially excused by a faculty member. STUDENTS MAY NOT LEAVE STETSON CAMPUS DURING THE WORKSHOP. This includes going out to eat with friends, parents or relatives. In the event of an emergency, students may leave campus with a chaperone that is approved by the workshop directors. Students who drive themselves to the workshop must relinquish their vehicle s keys to the workshop coordinator on the first day of the workshop. Students will be responsible for their personal belongings as well as materials used by the faculty. Students are also expected not to use/disturb the belongings of others without permission. Smoking, alcoholic beverages, other chemical abuse, firearms, fireworks or explosive devises will not be allowed under any circumstances. Violators of this regulation will be immediately dismissed from the workshop at parental expense. Any medical emergencies will be handled through West Volusia Memorial Hospital in DeLand. PARTICIPANTS MUST BRING THE ENCLOSED 2-page CONSENT FOR TREATMENT FORM TO REGISTRATION. THIS FORM MUST BE NOTARIZED. Your bank will generally do this for free. There will be a $25 charge per lost key payable immediately upon checkout. Students are expected to go nowhere alone and are to keep the directors or counselors advised of their whereabouts at all times. All workshop attendees are expected to be at all rehearsals, classes, and performances as specified in their schedule. Many students may be assigned to play Soprano, Alto, Tenor, or Baritone saxophone in either a chamber group or one of the saxophone bands - even though it may be their first experience on that saxophone. These assignments are determined by the needs of the workshop and the Saxophone Workshop Faculty. So everyone can have a great experience, students should turn cell phones or PDA s off during all rehearsals & performances (including texting). Students may use these in between activities as needed. Stetson s public safety office is open 24 hours a day and the campus is patrolled on a regular basis. Security s number is (386) 822-7300. In addition there are call boxes (identified by the blue lights) located at many points around campus for emergencies. Students are expected to exercise good judgment at all times and to look out for each other as well. Members of the opposite sex, except parents, are not allowed in the dorm rooms. Visitors outside of the workshop are also not allowed in the dorm rooms without the consent of the workshop directors. Please DO NOT bring expensive items such as game systems or stereos to the workshop. MOST OF ALL HAVE A GREAT MUSICAL EXPERIENCE

MUSIC ACTIVITIES Placement Auditions On the first day of the workshop after students check in at HATTER Hall, placement auditions will take place in assigned rooms. Students will audition on one of the following saxophones: Alto,Tenor, or Baritone Saxophone. These placement auditions are to assign students to a specific chamber group. This may also determine which type of saxophone the student will play in these chamber groups. These placement auditions may also determine which masterclass rotation and morning warm-up class students are assigned to. See Placement Audition Music near back of packet. Private Lessons Private lessons are an optional part of the saxophone workshop, included in the tuition. Students interested in receiving a private lesson should prepare one of the following in addition to their workshop audition etude to perform in their placement audition: A selected solo (or movement) from the FBA solo & ensemble list (see recommended list) One or both audition etudes for 2015 Florida All State Band (for their respective grade) Private jazz lessons are also an optional part of the saxophone workshop, included in the tuition. Students interested in receiving a jazz private lesson may make arrangements immediately following their jazz placement audition. Master-classes & Technique-classes Students will rotate four days to different topic master-classes. These will cover numerous specific concepts of saxophone playing. There, they will be instructed by four of our saxophone faculty. The technique-classes will focus on improving different physical saxophone fundamentals & musical playing. JAZZ Classes Most evenings during the workshop, students are split up into one of two types of classes. Students may choose to sign up for: 1) a jazz improvisation class, focusing on jazz theory, ear-training, and technique for improving jazz improvisation. (offered at the beginning, intermediate & advanced levels) 2) a jazz reading class focusing on jazz style playing within a jazz band/ensemble setting. Students should decide which jazz setting they wish to try-out for before the workshop begins. Students should also consider how much jazz experience they have before making this decision. Ensembles: Saxophone Choirs & Saxophone Chamber groups Each participant in the workshop will play in one of two saxophone choirs. Both groups perform in the final concert on Saturday. Each participant will play in either a saxophone quartet or other small saxophone chamber setting. All chamber groups perform in the chamber music concert on Friday evening. Both concerts are free and open to the public. Some students may play a different saxophone between these ensembles. Student Honors Recital Students who wish to try out to perform on the honors recital should prepare a saxophone solo (or movement) from the FBA solo & ensemble list. Auditions for this event will take place on Tuesday of the workshop. The Student Honors Recital will take place on Thursday evening right before the guest Jazz Artist Concert. Both of these events are free and open to the public. Faculty & Staff Performances Many of the staff and faculty perform four evenings during the workshop. Thursday s faculty performance is reserved for our guest jazz artist. The other three feature much of our faculty & staff in a variety of musical settings on different saxophones. All faculty concerts are free and open to the public.

Students may prepare either their All-State Audition Music or a solo from the State Solo & Ensemble List if they wish to be considered for receiving a private lesson. Please remember that a private lesson is an optional event during the workshop. This material may be available through Eble Music, Dorn Publications, or JWpepper music. Below is a selected list from the FBA Solo & Ensemble list. Although there are many other selections on the FBA list, these are merely hand selected based appropriate quality literature. Saxophone Workshop Placement Auditions Used for: Saxophone Band placement Saxophone Chamber Group Placement Technique/Master Class Rotation PLEASE READ THE AUDITION INFORMATION CAREFULLY On the first day of the workshop after students check in at HATTER Hall, placement auditions will take place in assigned rooms. Students will audition on one of the following saxophones: Alto,Tenor, or Baritone Saxophone. These placement auditions are to assign students to a specific chamber group. This may also determine which type of saxophone the student will play in these chamber groups. These placement auditions may also determine which masterclass rotation and morning warmup class students are assigned to. A private lesson with one of the workshop faculty is optional, and not required. See the Music Activities page for specific requirements. Students who wish to tryout for a private lesson will do so during the placement audition time. During the workshop, there are two saxophone choirs: Concert Saxophone Band & Symphonic Saxophone Band. All students are automatically assigned to the Concert Band, unless a student chooses to take the Symphonic Band audition, and is accepted. The Symphonic Saxophone Band is considered an advanced level performing ensemble. Students who choose to audition for the Symphonic Band will still audition on the same musical exercise within their grade level as everyone, and will also prepare two more short exercises and more scales. (Auditioning for Symphonic Saxophone Choir does not guarantee placement in this ensemble, regardless of experience or age.) The next pages include all placement audition requirements. Please read the descriptions carefully. Some of this material will be included on practice mp3 tracks on the saxophone workshop website: www.stetsonsaxophoneworkshop.org later in June.
