APPLICATION GUIDELINES 2017 TEEN ARTISTS ACADEMY WHAT The is an intensive arts program for serious students ages 13 to 18 in visual arts, music (instrumental and voice), dance, and theatre. Participants receive concentrated instruction and training in the discipline of their choice from professional artists through lectures, master classes, and exposure to art experiences. Participants also work on a collective production and art exhibition that they present to the community at the end of the program. Participants MUST be available to attend all weeks of the program. WHEN Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. The culminating visual arts exhibition opens July 28 and runs through August 5. The stage production takes place July 28 and July 29. WHERE Southwest Arts Center, a Fulton County facility located at 915 New Hope Road SW, Atlanta, GA 30331. The closest MARTA bus stop (#72) is approximately one mile away. COST If accepted into the Academy, there is a $50 activity fee for Fulton County residents and a $60 activity fee for non-fulton County residents. All fees are due by the first day of the program. One (or more) Letter of Recommendation (on form included in this packet) from an arts professional in the applicant s field. This letter must be submitted in a sealed and signed envelope. Review Format 2017 CREATIVE WRITING PORTFOLIO REVIEW GUIDELINES Saturday, March 18, 10:00 am 3:00 pm Creative Writing is for people who love to write and who are not afraid to get on stage to showcase their work. During the summer, about 60 percent of your time will be spent crafting short stories, essays, poems, and spoken word pieces; the other 40 percent will focus on performing your work. Bring a portfolio of your best writing. Perform a dramatic reading of an original work that you have written. Be prepared to discuss what motivates you to write and your writing process. Audition Format 2017 DANCE AUDITION GUIDELINES Saturday, March 18, 10:00 am 1:00 pm Auditions take place as a group and begin promptly at 10:00 am. You should arrive 30 minutes beforehand to warm up. The entire audition process lasts approximately 1-1/2 hours: Participate in a condensed group class consisting of ballet barre and modern combinations. Perform a short (1-minute) solo that you have constructed yourself or have done before. You must provide your own music. Interview with instructional staff after your solo. Wind Instruments Play three (3) major scales. Perform a solo piece with contrasting sections. Your solo should demonstrate technical ability and lyrical playing. No band or orchestra music. Review Format 2017 VISUAL ARTS PORTFOLIO REVIEW GUIDELINES Saturday, March 18, 10:00 am 3:00 pm Bring a portfolio of your best work that contains: o 2 drawings from life (still life and landscape) o Figure drawings from a live model and from photographs o 1 painting (can be any medium) at least 8 inches by 10 inches or larger that shows a command of color and composition This can be a school assignment that is either figurative or abstract. o 1 "personal painting" of your choosing This should demonstrate your creativity and choice of subject matter outside of school assignments. A 3-dimensional piece can be included as long as you can easily transport it. You must have all of the items listed above in order to be considered. Work created in previous sessions of the will not be accepted. Be prepared to discuss your work as it relates to concept and technical process.
