Welcome to the American Feng Shui Institute s Advanced class slide show. We hope you are enjoying the material so far. I m Chris Shaul, a senior instructor and webmaster for the Institute. In this presentation, we will show you various environments that are unfavorable and should either be avoided or remedied where possible. By seeing these environments, we hope that they will stick in your mind so that when you come across these situations, you will be able to identify them as potentially unfavorable Feng Shui environments. Let s begin 1

This is a lot plan of a basic neighborhood. Some lots are triangular or pie shaped. In Feng Shui theory, we prefer to take a square or rectangular lot. Pie shapes or irregular shaped lots are always not preferred. In this lot plan, if a client asks you to select a lot, try to avoid the pie shaped lots. 2

This shaped house could be difficult for you to get the sitting and facing. By the perspective of this picture, the side with the chimney is the facing and the side with the swimming pool is the sitting. By this photo, you can see that the building was built on a slope. This slope is draining the qi away from the home. We need to add a remedy to prevent the loss of the qi otherwise, this could be considered an unfavorable environment. You can see the slope down along the right side of the image. The hedge line along the right can help to hold the qi. Overall this lot is a pie shape. People living in a pie shaped lot will feel irritable and unstable. 3

This is a house below street level. This is not auspicious at all. First off, it is too yin. Then you also have the problem of all the dirt and dust falling into this house. Thinking of it practically, the dirty rainwater drains right into the property. Being that it is on a slope, it is difficult to hold the qi. Further, it appears that the plants are not green and beautiful. Further, if a car loses control, it may go right into the house. 4

Again this house is below the street level. Based on Yin and Yang theory, yang qi goes up and yin qi goes down. This house receives yin qi more than yang. We need a balance of yin and yang. We do not like extremes. The qi is running down the road and down the hill. This house is not receiving enough yang qi. 5

This house has an ugly external environment. This house has a lot of dead vegetation. Notice the dead tree too. This house does not have the appearance of being cared for. This house also is receiving pressure from above. 6

This house has a cave-like entrance. This is an example of an entry that is too yin. This entrance is too dark. Additionally, the entrance is at a lower level, so when it rains, all the dirty water and garbage will flow in. Outside of the house does not have a beautiful opening or Ming Tong. (This is discussed in the Advanced Sitting and Facing class.) The Ming Tong plays a very important role in Feng Shui. 7

Another yin entry. Additionally, this house is also below street level. Do you see how dark it is? Would you want to live here? The remedy here would be to lighten up the entry and to clean it up. Notice also the long staircase leading to the entrance. This kind of external environment is uncomfortable and it is difficult or costly to apply remedies. 8

This is a house on stilts. Stilt houses are definitely not preferred in Feng Shui. There is too much qi flow under the house and no stability. This lends itself to the people having unstable natures and also can lead to abdomen problems. 9

This is the same house from a different angle. Notice too that the house has an 'S' shaped road directed at it with the 'blade' side cutting into the house. This is inauspicious. 10

This is a very cold looking building. This home needs some warmth to it. It is too austere. These rocks also look like graves. This might be suitable for a library or museum, but is definitely not suitable for a home. 11

This house is at the outside of the curve. The qi is too strong here. The remedy would be to plant some large bushy plants to soften the flow of the qi. This house is also below the street level. Because this is a main road, this house will receive a lot of dust from the traffic. 12

This house has a lot of issues. This is perhaps a case where there was an east group person and this is a west group house. The 'Feng Shui Master' recommended adding the door extended out and and facing the east direction. This unfortunately does not change the direction of the house and this type of Feng Shui remedy is commonly used by practitioners who have an entry level knowledge in the Asian community. The doorway is difficult to enter and the appearance is unnatural. Something else to notice is that the windows are not uniform. Do not mix squares and rounded windows. 13

This is the Shi Lai temple near Los Angeles. This picture illustrates that the houses are very close to this overwhelming temple. Living so close can be very yin and is a little intimidating. Fortunately, these houses are occupied by the employees of the temple. 14

This is the same temple, but looking up from the perspective of the houses. You can see how imposing it is. 15

In Feng Shui, we do not prefer living across from a church or temple. There is often too much sorrow from funerals. Unhappy feelings are sha. We do not like extremes in Feng Shui. We prefer a place that is balanced. 16

In this picture the door is too narrow and small. Also the bushes are overgrown and blocking the flow of the qi. The address sign is askew and does not look natural. Also there are some repairs needed. In Yang house, if the door is too small proportionally with the building, the people living inside are not assertive. 17

This house has several problems. There is overgrown and dead shrubbery. The pointed roof eves create sha for those around this house. This house has not been kept up. This is a sight sha for those houses around. Also the walls are vary stark and blank. 18

This slide illustrates earth sha generated from construction. Disturbing the earth in certain directions can create problems. This is referred to as earth sha. This is the one case where you would recommend a metal wind chime as a remedy. You would place it between the house and the earth sha. 19

This hole in the earth is another earth sha. This is a very strong sha. 20

This slide illustrates noise sha. 21

This is a church construction site. This is very imposing as well as being a construction sha (noise, sight, sound, etc.) 22

This is a closer view of the same church construction. 23

This is a wash or culvert. It is preferred not to live near a wash. The dirty water flows through here and there is usually sight sha or even garbage collected in the wash. If you live nearby, add trees and bushes to block the sha. 24

This is a picture of the ramp out of a police parking structure. The point is to show how dramatic a flow of qi would be if you were directly opposite this ramp. This would not be a good place to have a house. Additionally, think of all the sha that goes on around a police station. Noise sha, and a lot of negative qi energy. 25

This is a closer picture of the ramp. 26

This picture illustrates a downward flow of qi again. This staircase is running down next to this house and away from the house. You can say that this is like a water flow running away from the house. Additionally, this house has a blue roof on a reddish house. The heavy color is on top and the lighter color is on the bottom. This creates pressure for the occupants. 27

Here is a closer picture of the stairway. 28

We mentioned that the stairway was like a water flow. Well next to it is an actual water fall. So this is an area where the qi is really flowing downhill. Standing in front of this, you can really sense the flow. 29

Closer picture of water flow. A water feature like this is beautiful looking, but it makes a lot of sound. If you are living too close and the noise bothers you, then it can become a noise sha. 30

This is a pretty obvious sha qi. These high tension power lines are too strong of a fire element. Plus the towers are a visual sha as well. The solution is to try not to live nearby. If you cannot avoid it, then adding a lot of earth between the power lines and the house can help some. These are so overwhelming though, that it would be difficult to remedy. This is an example of how the bigger environment can influence a house. 31

Another example of power lines. This is a school and the classroom is right below these power lines and transformers. 32

This is an example of someone trying to funnel qi from a different direction. This is unfortunately a common practice with people who do not know Feng Shui well. They know that their good direction is to a certain direction, so they use pathways to direct the qi. But this does not change the fact that the door is facing a certain direction and that the house is oriented a certain direction. They will still receive the qi from straight on. This is a common method used by Feng Shui practitioners who misuse the pie shape to read a yang house for receiving the water road. The literary name water road came from old books. These books only focused on yin house - grave sites, not yang house. Because these practitioners learned Feng Shui by book learning without experience or a without a true Master passing this knowledge to them, they mixed up the knowledge. The dangerous thing is that most people who use the pie shape to read a yang house do not own the yin house knowledge. 33

Here is another shot of this funnel. You will notice that the bushes are growing over the path. This can be a sha in itself as it does not feel inviting. 34

Another shot showing the bushes. This house would feel much better without these bushes. 35

Here is an illustration of a driveway in disrepair. We do not like to have cracks in the house or the driveway. This should be corrected immediately. 36

Same house. Here though we notice that there are 4 steps leading to the house. We do not like even number steps. People naturally walk on odd numbers of stairs. Even numbers throw people off balance. Most good contractors know this. Also, the stairs create an angle sha to people approaching. This is a repelling feeling. It would have been better to round these stairs off. 37

While this is a beautiful house, there are several things here that warrant our attention from a Feng Shui perspective. First and foremost is that they are using a small bagua mirror above the door. This is meant to repel negative energy, but as we have discussed, bagua mirrors do not do anything. If you look at the proportional size of the house and the mirror, does it really seem to help? Further, it is a sha on the house. People walking up will think that the owner is worried about something to have hung this bagua. Many have joked that it looks like a pimple on the face of this house. 38

Here is a good example of using mountain earth in the facing. The rocks and even the posts are an ideal solution. There is a raised stone Japanese lantern also present. The trees to can create a raised effect. On this house they even went so far as to put a rock facing. This is a beautiful example of how the earth element can be applied. 39

Here is another example of the same house. The pillars and the stones add to the earth remedy. 40

In this slide, you can see how a curved driveway creates a blade-like cut across the front of the house. To counter this, the architect, used a counter arc in the stairs to offset this environmental sha. 41

Here is another shot of the same house. You might notice that there is a raised lawn and a brick wall in front of the house. This is a good example of putting Mountain in the facing. It looks very natural, but it raises the earth in front of the house. The trees assist in creating this raised mountain effect in the facing. 42

This is a wider shot of the same house. Even the lamp post can be a form of mountain for this house. 43

Here is a shot of a one building being overpowered by another. This could lead to people working in the smaller building feeling oppressed. Notice too how the building is shorter on the left side than it is on right. This means that the women will be weaker. (Yang side is left and Yin side is right. But we need to think in terms of the Sitting Perspective. Here the Yin side is is out of balance) 44

Closer shot of the same building. Also you can notice how the roof is really heavy on this building. This too is creating a heaviness in the people. 45

Here is another building just like the last (actually it is next door). The other problem with this building is the sign. The letters have no symmetry. This is not comfortable to people and so it is not good Feng Shui. 46

A closer picture of the same building. 47

Here is a shot of an inside water remedy. This is moving water so it is even stronger. 48

Same fountain, but notice overhead the hanging metal sculpture. The metal helps to strengthen the water effect since the metal is productive to water. 49

Here is another water remedy. Again, they have used a metal effect to add to the water. There are 7 fountains and 7 is a metal number. This is believed to help strengthen the water effect. The black definitely helps make the water effect stronger, as does the metal pots. 50

Another view of the fountain. 51

Another view of the fountain. 52

In this slide we see how they have applied mountain earth to a building as a remedy. 53

This shows a sculpture outside the same building as shown in the previous slide. This is actually a sha since it is broken and feels like it is falling over. Red color represents fire, so red is not a color to paint a metal object because fire dominates metal. Additionally, the use of red and black (fire and water) is too extreme. You can see also that the rocks in front can help with the mountain remedy, but for such a large building, they are proportionally too small. 54

Here is a house under construction. There are a couple of things that are unfavorable here. One is that the house is on a split level. After walking into the house, you immediately descend down a level. Additionally, while this picture does not show it, the kitchen is visible from the entry. This is not preferred. 55

Here is a better shot. This shows how dramatic the descending stair case is and notice too that there is another staircase leading up. So many levels is not comfortable for people. Also you can see the kitchen right from the entrance. 56

This is an example of a stairway leading straight to the door. This is not good as the qi can flow right out the door. We would prefer that the stairway not come right at the door. The solution is to perhaps put a landing and turn the stairs to the left. Or, at the very least to put some bushy shrubs along the stairway to slow down the qi. Also, if you have the option, you can avoid using this door and use another. 57

This is an example of an angle sha. You do not want to place your desk or chair in front of this angle. You can use a bushy plant or tree in front of this angle to soften the flow of the qi. 58

Here is an example of a beam above the bed. This beam is not so bad since it is off to the side of the bed. If it were directly above the bed, then the couple here could have marital problems or even health problems. Ideally, this beam is covered by a false ceiling. 59

Here is a closer look at the beam. Notice how if the qi were flowing along the ceiling, that it is then directed straight down. The larger the beam the more undesirable it is. 60

Here is a large custom built house in Southern California that was home to a self-proclaimed Feng Shui Master. We can see things that do not make Feng Shui sense. Apparent in this picture shows the dead grass in the landscaping. The main entrance is too tall in proportion to the house. With such a large lot, the opening should be more beautiful and spacious. The right and left side of the house do not feel balanced. 61

Here you see in front of the house mounds of grass. This is not preferred for a yang house. Obviously one landscaped this house based on yin house concepts. 62

You can see the hilly grass. This makes it look like a grave mound. 63

This house too was done by the same type of Feng Shui concept. The most apparent thing is that there is a large closed dry pond and wall facing the entrance like a tombstone. 64

This is a different view. You can see this pond/fountain. Notice though how it looks like a mausoleum wall. Plus this really blocks the qi in front of the house. Further it is ugly. 65

Here is a picture of a cemetary in Los Angeles. Can you see how the grass has mounds? The purpose of the mounds is to accumulate the qi for the lower part of the land. 66

Here you can see another shot of the cemetery. The graves close to the roadside is too yang for the yin house due to the movement of the traffic. 67

Here is another view of the cemetary. 68

Another view of the cemetery. Feng Shui for yin house is completely another field of Feng Shui. It is very complicated and profound. Even today, there are very few yin house Feng Shui practitioners. In the old days, Feng Shui practitioners preferred to read 5 yang houses than 1 yin house. You can see how difficult it is to actually take a yin house reading. With more than 14 years of teaching and thousands of students, there has only been one class in Yin House Feng Shui and not more than students were qualified to go into the yin house introductory class. 69

This is our last slide. Feel free to review the slides again and see what else you can spot in the slides. Feng Shui is an observational study of the environment, as well as mapping the qi with numbers. You need to look at both. Thank you for participating! 70
