About us Contributions Order form In 1954 a group of classical music aficionados in Croton, tired of going down to New York City to hear live music, pooled their resources and invited the young Juilliard String Quartet to perform in the gym of Croton Elementary School, also giving a special concert for students the day before the next night s performance. That set the standard for our continuing mission: to bring to Westchester audiences musicians of world renown and those relatively new to the burgeoning musical scene; to include students in special ways in order to help build future audiences; and to make our concerts as affordable as possible. This eclectic 64th season kicks off with Emerson String Quartet, making their 19th appearance on our stage. They will be followed by our eighth Performance Awardees, the young Zorá Quartet, and the welcome return of the Modigliani Quartet. Our first spring concert will feature the cellist Edward Arron and friends pianist Jeewon Park and violinist Tessa Lark, to be followed by the acclaimed and edgy Brooklyn Rider quartet. The season will close with a return appearance by pianist Charlie Albright. Friends of Music Concerts again will offer Partnerships in Education, a program now in its tenth year, that helps selected schools in Westchester supplement their own music education efforts. When ArtsWestchester (then the Westchester Arts Council) gave this non-profit, all-volunteer organization its 2004 Arts Organization Award, it recognized our concerts quality and the fact that they remained, as they are today, among the best bargains in the New York metropolitan area. This year we again will be admitting those 18 years and under free of charge. Our success depends on volunteers time and expertise, and on funds contributed by those who believe in our mission and enjoy our concerts. Friends of Music Concerts, Inc., is an all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization. Ticket sales pay for only a portion of concert expenses. In this era of rising costs and government grant cutbacks, you can help keep our concerts affordable by adding a tax-deductible contribution to your ticket payment. Contributors names will be printed in each concert program the way they appear on the order form. The category under which your name is printed will reflect any matching funds from your employer. Contributor under $100 Donor $100 $249 Sponsor $250 $499 Patron $500 $999 Benefactor $1000 $2,499 Grantor For more information, visit our web site, www.friendsofmusicconcerts.org or call (914) 861-5080. State of the Arts NYSCA $2,500 or more These concerts are made possible, in part, by a Project Support Grant made by ArtsWestchester with funds from Westchester County Government, by a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, and by gifts from corporations and numerous private individuals. Travel directions North Mobil Gas Station Depeyster Traffic Light Route 9 (North Broadway) Bedford Rd. (Route 448) Korean Church To Overflow Parking Auditorium Entrance Our concerts take place in the beautiful Kusel Auditorium at Sleepy Hollow High School, 210 North Broadway in Sleepy Hollow, New York. It is spacious, air-conditioned and accessible; its comfortable seats have plenty of legroom. Sleepy Hollow High School is located on the east side of North Broadway (Route 9), between Route 448 and Tarrytown. A traffic light on Route 9 at DePeyster Street signals the very well marked entrance to the grounds. From there, follow the left-hand access road around the main building to the auditorium entrance and parking areas. Taking the right-hand access road will lead to overflow parking. All parking is free. The entrance from Route 448 is most direct for those coming from the east (e.g. the Taconic and Saw Mill River Parkways, Route 9A, Pleasantville and environs). Take Route 117 east to the first traffic light after Route 9A; turn left (south) onto Route 448, following it as it makes a right-angle turn to the west in the hamlet of Pocantico Hills. The entrance to the high school is on the left before Route 448 s junction with Route 9. The well-lit ground-level entrance to the auditorium is on the north side of the high school building, opposite the parking lot off Route 448 and slightly up the hill to the east of the parking lot along the access road from Route 9. Handicapped parking is available close to the auditorium entrance and is clearly marked. There is a drop-off and turnaround area close to the auditorium entrance. With Friends of Music Concerts, what you see is what you get. The energy and excitement of chamber music ranging over four centuries in live performances by some of the finest musicians of our time. Charlie Albright, piano Photo: Lisa Mazzucco Emerson String Quartet Saturday, October 7, 2017 Saturday, May 12, 2018 Acclaimed by audiences and critics around the world, the Emerson returns for its 19th appearance on our series. Said The New York Times recently, The performances were everything we have come to expect from this superb ensemble: technically resourceful, musically insightful, full of character, and always interesting. Their program will include Beethoven s String Quartet in F Major, Op. 135; Schumann s String Quartet No. 3 in A Major, Op. 41; and Beethoven s String Quartet in E-flat Major, Op. 127. One of our first Performance Awardees, and a favorite of the Friends of Music audience, Charlie Albright returns for his second appearance on our series. The program of this American-born pianist, composer, and improviser will include two impromptus from Franz Schubert s Opus 90 (No. 3 in G-flat Major and No. 2 in E-flat Major); Concert Arabesques by Schulz-Evler on themes from Strauss s On the Beautiful Blue Danube; Variations, Op. 41 by Nikolai Kapustin; and selected Etudes from Frederic Chopin s Opus 25.

Brooklyn Rider Zorá Quartet Saturday, April 28, 2018 Saturday, October 21, 2017 This breakout ensemble, whose performances attract legions of fans from classical and world music, has been hailed by some as the future of chamber music. Said the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, They are four classical musicians playing with the energy of young rock stars... Their program will include selections from Bach s Art of the Fugue; Bella by Barlight by John Lurie (b. 1952); BTT by Colin Jacobsen (b. 1978); and Beethoven s String Quartet in B-flat Major, Op. 130. Winner of the 2015 Young Concert Artists International Auditions in New York City, the Zorá Quartet is the eighth recipient of our Performance Award. Commenting on a recent performance by these musicians from Thailand, South Korea, China, and Spain, The New York Times praised their depth and maturity as well as their affecting impetuosity. Their program will include Mendelssohn s String Quartet No. 2 in A minor, Op. 13; and Beethoven s String Quartet No. 15 in A minor, Op. 132.

Edward Arron, cello Photo: Ellen Appel Modigliani Quartet Saturday, November 18, 2017 Saturday, April 14, 2018 A favorite of the Friends of Music audience, the Modigliani Quartet returns for its third appearance on our series. They have been praised for their elegance and shaded refinement [that brings] a distinctive style to the tapering of phrase, balance, and quality of sound. The French ensemble s program will include Mozart s String Quartet in D Major, K. 575; Saint Saens s Quartet in E minor, Op. 112; and Mendelssohn s String Quartet in F minor, Op. 80. This Westchester-based artist, known worldwide for his elegant musicianship and satiny tone, will be joined for this concert by pianist Jeewon Park and violinist Tessa Lark. Their program will include Beethoven s Piano Trio in D Major, Op. 70, No. 2 ( Ghost ); Ravel s Sonata for Violin and Cello (1920-22); and Dvořák s Piano Trio in F minor, Op. 65.
