ABRACT ii Mikel Kueh, Advisor Masks, scored for flute, oboe, clariet, violi, cello, percussio, ad piao, is orgaized ito eight sectios that are based upo woodwid multiphoics. Each sectio is based o a sigle multiphoic or a combiatio thereof distributed across the wid istrumets. These combiatios costitute the sectios of the piece as follows: I: clariet, II: clariet ad flute, III: flute ad oboe, IV: oboe ad clariet, V: flute, clariet, ad oboe, VI: o multiphoics, VII: oboe, VIII: flute. The eight sectios represet the seve possible combiatios of the three wid istrumets (each of which feature at least oe multiphoic), with the additio of oe sectio sas multiphoics. Harmoic ad melodic material for every sectio is derived from the spectral compoets of each multiphoic with the additio of other pitches that serve to erich the harmoic cotet of the overall esemble. These other pitches come from pitchsets that are complemetary to the pitch-sets of each multiphoic. The ability of every istrumet to bled ad distiguish themselves from oe aother is exploited i Masks through the iterplay of short, violet gestures ad soft, sustaied gestures. Melodic lies ofte emerge covertly from withi a multiphoic texture, ad at other times a multiphoic is created sythetically through the layerig of distict voices.
