A NOTE FROM Kristen Chesak Managing Director Escape from the winter blues at the Civic t has taken me 20 years to get used to winter in Michigan and I have to say it is still as unpredictable as the first winter I spent as a very under-dressed and naïve college student from the west coast. Little did I know that those winters would become the norm for me. The good part about winter in Kalamazoo at least for me is that it means another season to produce great theatre. This winter is certainly no different. We laughed our way through January with a great production of A New Brain and continue to enjoy a knee-slapper of a show The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940. February promises to be equally as enjoyable, as we have a fabulous special event in store for you. This very special fundraising event called Love (of wine) Makes the World Go Round is sure to be a spectacular evening. You ll enjoy wine and beer from all over the world, as well as some wonderful food and great entertainment from right here in Kalamazoo. You ll move from room to room (and onto the stage) as you sample your favorite libations. Tickets are just $45 dollars and can be purchased at the Box Office or online at www.kazoocivic.com. Between you and me, I think it s going to be the must-attend FUNdraiser of the season! We have two great shows in rehearsal! Smokey Joe s Café opens March 2nd and is going to rock the Auditorium thru March 18th. Featuring some of the best music to come out of the 50 s and 60 s, this is one show you re not going to want to miss. Be sure to order your tickets soon! Our Youth Theatre production of How I Became a Pirate will open in the Parish Theatre on March 16th. Written by the same talented duo that brought us Sleepy Hollow, a Musical Tale last year, this musical adventure is sure to be an entertaining treat for the whole family. We have been busy putting the final touches on next season, and look forward to sharing with you what we have in store. Please join us on Wednesday, March 7 at 5:30 pm in the Auditorium for a sneak peek at the productions that will comprise the 2012-2013 season. You ll laugh, you ll cry, you ll tell your friends it was better than CATS! Don t miss the announcement! Finally, this month, I want to ask for your assistance. The Kalamazoo Civic Theatre has enjoyed the generous support of our community in so many ways for eight decades. We pride ourselves on stretching every donated dollar as far as we can, and truly being good stewards of the gifts we are given. We are close to making our goal for contributions this season, but we aren t quite there and could use your help. Giving is easy; you can send a check in to the office or make a donation online at www.kazoocivic.com. We appreciate the generosity shown to us by our wonderful donors. Although you may not see it on a regular basis, your support is helping to enhance the quality of life for so many people in Kalamazoo. We couldn t impact our community the way we do without your help. I look forward to seeing you at the Civic, your community theatre! UPCOMING SENIOR CLASS READER S THEATRE PLAY M U S I C A L cripts are available and may be checked out from the Business Office with a $5.00 (cash only) refundable deposit. NOW PLAYING! huge THANK YOU to Laurel and Terry Parrott for allowing us to shoot promotional pictures for The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940 at The Kalamazoo House. We were made to feel so welcome, I can only imagine how special guests of this beautiful bed and breakfast must feel. By John Bishop thru February 11th CIVIC AUDITORIUM COMEDY C omplete with secret passageways, flickering lights and the blizzard of the century, this laugh-filled farce spoofs the great murder mystery movies of the 1940 s. As the murderous mayhem unfolds, an eccentric heiress has agreed to work with the New York police to solve a series of murders. She invites a group of theatre people to her home on the pretense of holding a backer s audition for a new musical. The creative team for this new project had also been involved in Manhattan Holiday, a production that closed abruptly when three of its showgirls were mysteriously murdered. It s not long before bodies are dropping once again and everyone s a suspect. Will the mystery of the Stage Door Slasher be untangled before it s too late?
