AP Lit & Comp 9/27 9/28 17 1. Thesis statements for BNW theme essays 2. Theme essays 101 3. The Man Who Spilled Light 4. Socratic prep work seminar next class

Reminders Death to the one word theme. Look back at the BNW theme slideshow on Classroom to choose four themes. Turn those theme statements into thesis statements. Use the formula we went over in class to do this. Thesis statements must be argumentative and clearly state a claim about the existence of a theme. Must have the text s name (punctuated correctly) and the author s name.

TASK Open up a Google Doc. Title it BNW thesis statements Write your four thesis statements (wordsmith and polish them.) Submit to Classroom.

Example The (genre) novel (title) Brave New World by (author) Aldous Huxley (reflects upon/examines, or other strong verb) presents (topic/abstract concept) a society of futuristic humans who are unable to think freely or feel true emotion, revealing that (assertion about human condition) advancements in technology have the potential to destroy what is most meaningful about humanity.

Take about 20 minutes to get a good start on this.

NOW let s look at how one would go about writing a theme essay. Let s use this AP Lit open ended prompt: Novels and plays often depict a character caught between colliding cultures whether they are regional, ethnic, religious, or institutional. Such collisions can call a character's sense of identity into question. Select a character frombrave New World who responds to such a cultural collision. Describe the character's response and explain its relevance to the work as a whole.

Novels and plays often depict a character caught between colliding cultures whether they are regional, ethnic, religious, or institutional. Such collisions can call a character's sense of identity into question. Select a character from Brave New World who responds to such a cultural collision. Describe the character's response and explain its relevance to the work as a whole. So what do I need to figure out first to write this essay? 1. Which character will I choose? 2. What is the cultural collision this character experiences and how does it impact his/her identity? 2. How could this character s response to that cultural collision help Huxley deliver one of his novel s themes? (so I have to pick a theme from BNW) 3. How do I write this into a thesis statement? 4. Working with a partner, figure out and write down your thoughts for # s 1-4 above. Your end goal is a strong thesis statement for this prompt.

Brain Break 1. Stand up. 2. Touch your toes. 3. Touch the middle of your back with each hand. 4. Balance on each foot.

Prepping for Socratic circles 1. Craft 8 high level discussion questions that require critical thinking and textual knowledge to answer. 2. Under each question, jot down your thoughts (if you were answering the question.) 3. Write three additional questions for Brave New World that connect back to Thomas Foster s book How to Read Literature Like a Professor.

Prepping for Socratic circles 4. When writing your questions, try to dig into themes and this unit s essential questions. In fact, you ll want to go back into your essential question s DOC and write any new revelations you have in a different ink color. 5. You ll also need to read the short essay I gave you in class On Silence and answer those questions. 6. Submit your questions to Classroom OR bring me a hard copy (can be handwritten if you write darkly and neatly.)

EXPECTATIONS I support the things I say with specific evidence from the novel. My contributions, many times, pay close attention to authorial intent and purpose. My contributions indicate a strong understanding of characterization and motivation. My contributions, at times, utilize direct quotes as support of my thoughts and opinions. I build on the comments made by other students to help the group come to a deeper understanding. I attempt high level discussion skills like playing the devil s advocate, asking follow up questions, answering with specific textual support, etc. I treat other members of the discussion with respect even/especially if I don t agree with them.

For next class 1. Finish and submit thesis statements 2. Prep for Socratic seminar -Read On Silence -Readdress your essential questions with new revelations 3. Bring me a paper copy of your CAE draft, if you d like my feedback before the final is due.
