All About Me, Internet Scavenger Hunt Internet Scavenger Hunt (All About Me) Have students visit the sites below (and maybe a few more) and construct a PowerPoint about themselves. What Does My Name Mean? - Learn the etymology and history of your first name. The Day I was Born Have students find out what events occurred on their birthday. How Old I REALLY Am Use the website to calculate how many months, weeks, days or hours old you are. Students may also want to research where they were born (Country, State, City, etc) Once students have completed their research they can use the information collected to create a PowerPoint presentation.
Venn Diagram and Brochure Venn Diagram Open a new blank PowerPoint Draw a large circle and then duplicate it Arrange the circles so that they are overlapping in the middle Double-click the top circle Change the transparency to about 50% and change the color if you want to Use the text box tool to add labels and to add information to the sides and center of the venn diagram Helpful Hint: Double-click the text box tool to keep it selected, and press the escape key to de-select it Possible Ideas: Presidents States Wars Authors Book Characters Creating a Tri-Fold Brochure Turn on Rulers Add a line from top to bottom at 2 inches on the right and left Change weight of line to 50, and color to light gray Duplicate slide Create brochure: Slide 1 is the outside front of the brochure Slide 2 is the inside of the brochure Delete gray lines Print slide 1, re-insert paper, print slide 2
Crossword Puzzle Have students create their own crossword puzzles about historical figures/events, or book characters Go to There are many puzzle types available on this site, but to create a crossword puzzle, select the puzzle type Criss-Cross On the Puzzle Creation screen you will need to first enter a title for your crossword Leave the Step 2 and Step 3 selections alone (at least for the first time) Enter your crossword words and clues. You will need to enter the word followed by a space and the clue for the word. Enter your next clue on the next line (Example below) GeorgeWashington Our first president AndrewJackson Known as Stonewall Jackson When your clues are all entered, click Create My Puzzle! Students can then Print and submit their crossword puzzle as an assignment, or even better, complete each others crossword puzzles before submitting them to you! Once you are more familiar with the website you may wish to alter the settings found in Step 2 & 3 when creating your puzzle.

Bookmarks Bookmark Have students write a short book review, or summary of a book Open a blank PowerPoint slide Go to View and then Ruler, to turn the rulers on Use the Line tool to draw a line from top to bottom at the 2½ inch mark on the left side Hint: Hold shift on your keyboard to keep the line straight Duplicate the line (ctrl and d) and position the new line at the 0 inch mark on the ruler Duplicate (ctrl and d) one more time Paste an image of the cover of the book in your first rectangle (Barnes and Noble s website is a great resource) To copy an image from the website, right-click on the image and go to copy. Go back to your PowerPoint slide and right-click, then go to paste Adjust the size of the image (if necessary) and position the image in the center of the first rectangle on your side towards the top Add a text box above the cover, and type the title and the author s name Draw another text box below the cover Have your students write their brief summary (or book review) in the text box You might need to make a few adjustments to the font and size of the text to make all of the information fit into the first rectangle
Bookmarks (cont d) Click the title of the book, and then hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard. Keeping the Ctrl key held down, click with your mouse on the cover of the book and on the summary. Let go of the Ctrl key. Press Ctrl and D on your keyboard Press the up arrow on your keyboard 2 times, and then use your right arrow to move the bookmark to the correct place (the line to the right of the bookmark should be directly under the 0 on the ruler) Hold the Ctrl key on your keyboard and then press D two times You should now have a slide with 4 bookmarks on it. Have your students print their slide and cut the bookmarks apart. Idea: Each student could keep one of their bookmarks, and then donate their other 3 to the library. Then when students from the school check-out a book from the library they can get a bookmark that another student has created with a review of a book.
Summary Sleuth Summary Sleuth Have students write summary or report on a topic Open a blank PowerPoint slide Draw a text box at the top of the slide that is the width of the page Type the summary/report in the text box Have the text take up the entire slide (or as close as you can get) Click the oval tool Draw a long narrow oval Double-click the oval and change the fill color to brown and change the line weight to 2 click OK Position your mouse over the bright green dot that is coming off of your oval Click and drag the oval to rotate it (to about a 45 angle) Click the oval tool again and draw a small circle Hint: Hold the shift key while drawing the oval to make a proportionate circle
Summary Sleuth (cont d) Double-click the circle and change the fill color to brown and the line weight to 2, click OK Position the circle to where it is slightly over-lapping the rectangle at the top Select the oval tool one last time and draw a large circle Double-click the large circle, but this time keep the color blue. Change the weight to 2 and set the transparency at 20%. Click OK. You should now have what resembles a magnifying glass (you may have to move things around a little) Add a text box on the blue circle and type the main idea of the report You are now a Summary Sleuth!
Microsoft Word Activity TALL Tales Have students write their own Tall Tale, and then type it into Microsoft Word Format the page by clicking on File and then Page Setup Under the Margin tab set all margins (top, bottom, left, and right) to.5 then click OK Select the text by choosing Edit and Select All Then select Format, Columns, and choose Three, then select OK Print the page, and then cut out the columns Tape the columns together to complete the TALL Tale Extension Use clipart to create a cowboy hat and boots Print the images, cut them out, and tape them to the top and bottom of your Tall Tale
Kidspiration & Inspiration Activities Autobiography Have students (with help from their parents) come up with something that they did for each year of their life In Kidspiration have them create a web with numbers for their age For example if they are 7 years old, they need to use the numbers 0 through 7. Next to the number 0 they put where they were born. For number 1, they put something that they did when they were 1 year old, and continue this for all years. To enter a new bubble click the add symbol button at the top of the page Helpful tip, once all information has been entered press ctrl + e on your keyboard to fit to screen
Kidspiration Activities SuperGroupers Parts of Speech SuperGrouper Open a new Kidspiration Picture Hit the eraser to clear the page Insert a box at the top of the screen In the box type your title (Parts of Speech) You can change your font size and color at the bottom of the screen Click once to select the title box and then go to Teacher and Enable the Teacher Menu (if necessary). Then return to the Teacher menu, and select Locked Item.
