GRADE 1 It is difficult to provide specific titles for our soon-to-be first graders as their reading abilities and skills are limited. Therefore, we are requesting that you read the following types of stories with your child and tailor your choice to reflect your child s reading level and interests. Please read one book from each category with your child this summer: One excerpt from the Children s Bible Joseph and his Dream) (examples - Noah and the Ark, One book from the Dr. Seuss series (examples Hop on Pop, 10 Apples Up on Top, The Eye Book, etc.) One Caldecott Award winning book: (available at Barnes and Noble, Scholastic Books or Amazon.com) Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey Lilly s Purple Plastic Purse by Kevin Henkes A Sick Day for Amos McGee by Philip C. Stead or If You Give.(book series) by Laura Numeroff Students should draw a picture and write two sentences (Main Idea) for each book they have read. Please include Title, Author, and Illustrator for each book. Compile all sentences and drawings into MY SUMMER READING BOOKLET and bring this booklet to their First Grade Teacher in September. GRADE 2 Three Books to read & One Bible story Please choose ONE: This is the House that Jack Built - Simms, Taback (Caldecott Medal Winner) The Little House by Virginia Lee Burton (Caldecott Medal Winner) A Tree is Nice by Janice May Udry (Caldecott Medal Winner) Zen Shorts by Jon J Muth (Caldecott Honor Book) Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst Please choose TWO: Any book from the Frog and Toad series by Arnold Lobel Any book from the Cam Jansen series by David Adler Any book from the Henry and Mudge series by Cynthia Rylant Any book from the Nate the Great series by Marjorie Weinman Sharmat Any book from the Mercy Watson series by Kate Di Camillo Bible Reading: Please choose ONE: Samson and Delilah The Battle of Jericho King Solomon s Wisdom Tower of Babel After reading each book, complete a book report form (see attached). Choose one form for each book. The book reports will be collected on the first day of second grade. After reading the Bible Story, create a poster (see attached). GRADE 3 Please read 2 of the following books plus the Bible Reading and complete the attached 2 book reports over the summer. All of the books can be found at either your local library or at Barnes and Noble. The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies The Chocolate Touch by Patrick Skene Catling Third Grade Angels by Jerry Spinelli Ramona Quimby, Age 8 by Beverly Cleary (or another Ramona book) Judy Moody by Megan McDonald Fancy Folder Book Report: Follow directions on the sheet to make a book report folder. Fiction book Report: After completing the book report, on the back of the paper draw a colorful picture of an important event in the book. Bible Reading: Genesis 6, 9-17 The Story of Noah All assignments will be collected on the first day of Third Grade.
GRADE 4 Read three of the following books and write a book report for each on the form provided. Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume Fourth Grade Rats by Jerry Spinelli Summer Reading is Killing Me by John Scieszka ( Time Warp Trio humor series) Sideways Stories from Wayside School by Louis Sachar Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo The Trumpet of the Swan by E.B. White Bible Reading: Genesis Chapter 1 All assignments will be collected on the first day of Fourth Grade.
GRADE 5 All incoming fifth graders are required to read all three. A test will be given in September on each of the books. Students should use index cards to make a short summary of each chapter so they can review these notes in the fall. GRADE 6 Summer Reading is an enjoyable experience designed to keep reading skills active. Students are required to read two books over the summer. Books are available at Barnes and Noble. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L Engle Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson Students must complete Summer Fiction Book Report Form for Bridge to Terabithia. There will be a test on A Wrinkle in Time in September. IXL: Complete 5 th Grade Measurement, then proceed to 6 th Grade Measurement
All students must read two books. GRADE 7 That Was Then, This is Now by S.E. Hinton (test in September) Wonder by R.J. Palacio Summarize each chapter on an index card (cards are due the first day of school). All students must also read the following passages from the Bible: Acts of the Apostles 17:24-25 27-28 Matthew 16:14-16 26:63-66 Luke 22:19-20 24:26-31 Ephesians 4:4, 5-6 After reading these passages, write a brief summary (3-5 sentences) on index cards for each and be ready to discuss on the first day of school. They should be stapled together with your name on it for collection. IXL: Complete 7 th Grade Measurement, then proceed to 8 th Grade Measurement
GRADE 8 All students must read two selections as well as the Bible selection from the Old Testament. Milkweed is a must for all students. Students may then choose one of the other selections. Hinton or Scorpia by Anthony Horowitz Old Testatment Reading: Micah 6:3-8 The students should be ready to discuss the material during the first week of school. Tests will be administered on assigned dates. These scores will be calculated into the first trimester grades for Literature/Religion. Barnes and Noble at Clifton Commons have been notified of our summer selections. Books can also be borrowed from the public library or from students who have previously read them.
