Huffy Using Our Vocabulary in Sentences! Schlep I get huffy when my sister blasts her music while I am trying to study. A. It was a schlep to the supermarket. B. I complained to my sister about our schlep to school because the mile hike always made me tired. Which sentence is better? Why? Sentence B is better because it gives the reader more details that allow them to use context clues to determine the meaning of schlep. The siblings walk to school is a difficult journey because of its length and exhausting effect. In Sentence A, the narrator gives us no details to prove that the supermarket trip is a schlep.

But these two Star Wars characters are father and son, respectively. Auggie and Julian didn t want to be associated with one another through their costumes. Auggie makes a fake excuse, telling his dad the Boba Fett costume was too difficult to get on so he switched to Bleeding Scream. 1. Why was Auggie homeschooled for 5 years (K-4)? Include cleft palate.

1. Why was Auggie homeschooled for 5 years (K-4)? Include cleft palate. Auggie was homeschooled until the fifth grade because he had an enormous amount of surgeries 27! throughout his childhood. Several of them were to fix his cleft palate. Auggie had most before age four, but averaged approximately three surgeries every year. He also got sick a lot because of his other medical mysteries. In the chapter, Why I Didn t Go to School, Auggie states that people often think [he hasn t] gone to school because of the way [he] look[s], but it s not that. It s because of all the surgeries [he s] had (4).

2. Explain how this line supports Auggie s initial attitude toward starting school? Okay, so I admit that the first day of school I was so nervous that the butterflies in my stomach were more like pigeons flying around my insides (35). 3. Who is Auggie s only real friend at school? Explain your answer.

2. Explain how this line supports Auggie s initial attitude toward starting school? Okay, so I admit that the first day of school I was so nervous that the butterflies in my stomach were more like pigeons flying around my insides (35). This line from Wonder supports that Auggie was petrified, or incredibly scared, to start school because it states that Auggie could feel the nerves in his stomach, and butterflies were too gentle an insect to describe them accurately. Instead, Auggie s nerves were so big and intense and prodding that they were like pigeons. 3. Who is Auggie s only real friend at school? Explain your answer.

Auggie s only real friend at Beecher Prep is Summer because she has willingly sat with him at lunch everyday since the first day of school. Even though Jack Will sits next to Auggie in most classes, Auggie overhears Jack Will badmouthing and complaining about him at the end of Part One, so whether or not he is a true friend to Auggie is in question.

5. How do we know that Julian s behavior is affecting Auggie? What does Auggie do in response to Auggie s bullying?

5. How do we know that Julian s behavior is affecting Auggie? What does Auggie do in response to Auggie s bullying? Auggie tries to ignore Julian.

5. How do we know that Julian s behavior is affecting Auggie? What does Auggie do in response to Auggie s bullying? Auggie tries to ignore Julian. We know that Julian s behavior is affecting Auggie because Auggie gets visibly upset over his bullying and makes a drastic change to his physical appearance in direct response to a mean comment by Julian. Julian questions Auggie s hair length during the summer tour of Beecher Prep, and Julian brings up his braid in front of the class on the first day of school. That night at home, Auggie chops off the braid that took years to grow without even informing his parents. After Auggie overhears Julian comparing Darth Sidious s melted face to his facial difference, Auggie starts sweating, feels like his face is on fire, feels like he has been kicked in the gut, and hides in the bathroom to cry. In response to two separate incidents involving Julian, Auggie expresses a desire to disappear.

In Wonder, open to page 94: After School.

Ella and Miranda hung out together without Via over the summer. On first day of school, Via s friends dressed in unexpected ways: pink hair and tube top. At home, Via acts huffy and gets really mad that Auggie cuts off his braid without telling her. Via takes the subway home instead of carpooling with Miranda s mom.
