On ordan s Stormy Banks This ell-knon hymn by the Rev. Dr. Samuel Stennett (177 1795) irst appeared in Selection o Hymns, a celebrated hymnal compiled by the Baptist editor ohn Rippon. Published in 1787, Rippon s hymnal also introduced in its enduring orm Edard Perronet s All Hail the Poer o esus Name. A native o Exeter, Samuel Stennett spent his childhood in London here his ather served a Baptist church as pastor. In 1758, he succeeded his ather in the pastorate o the Baptist church in Little Wild Street, London, here he served until his death. A scholarly man, Stennett received a D.D. rom King s College, Aberdeen in 1763. Knon also as a riend o the reigning monarch, George III, Stennett nonetheless reused political or social opportunities to devote himsel to ministry. His prominence among the Dissenting ministers o London aorded occasions to use his inluence ith political igures on behal o religious liberty. Stennett authored 39 hymns, ive o hich appeared in Rippon s Selection (1787). His grandather, oseph Stennett, had also been a prominent Dissenting hymn riter, publishing several hymnals relecting his Puritan-rooted religion o the heart. Samuel Stennett continued the tradition, although ith less passionate language o glory and grace than had marked his grandather s Puritaninluenced notions o Christian experience. Stennett rote seven stanzas or On ordan s Stormy Banks. The hymn is also knon by the title Stennett gave it, Promised Land. Critics have noted that Promised Land echoes a ell-knon hymn by Isaac Watts, There Is a Land o Pure Delight. More than any other o Stennett s hymns, Promised Land ound enormous popularity in 19 th -century America. Its acceptance by American Methodists and its subsequent use in camp meetings and brush arbors help account or this. The hymn has appeared in each American Methodist hymnal since Francis Asbury included it in his Supplement to the Pocket Hymn Book (1808). Stennett s eight stanzas are generally reduced to three or our, and several o these may be slightly altered. The song ound its ay into the 1835 Southern Harmony and is part o the American shape note tradition. At some times in American history, evangelicals have reinterpreted Stennett s biblical metaphors ith a this-orldly eye toard the promised land ust over the horizon on the estern rontier. Promised Land has been set to various tunes. Perhaps the best-knon in the United States today is PROMISED LAND, a traditional early-nineteenthcentury American melody ith a strong resemblance to a once-popular dance tune. William Walker s Southern Harmony attributes the tune to or revie only a Miss M. Durham. Rigdon M. McIntosh revised PROMISED LAND and changed it rom minor to maor tonality. McIntosh also added a rerain. Promised Land can be ound in American hymnals in maor or minor keys and ith or ithout rerains.
