Summer Reading (Incoming 5 th Grade) The summer reading program will help prepare students for the upcoming school year. All incoming 5 th grade students are required to read the book Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Patterson. During the first week of school, students will be tested on this book. This will count as the first grade of the year. Students should also be prepared for class discussions and in class writing assignments related to this selection. It is highly recommended that students purchase this book so that they can refer back to the book prior to the test, for the writing assignments and class discussions. If students purchase their own book, they may write notes in the margins to help them. Students should pay close attention to literary elements like setting, main characters and plot. Make sure to check on my SchoolNotes page throughout the summer. Extra Credit questions will be posted throughout the summer. This book is available at Barnes & Noble, and Amazon.com. Students are reminded to purchase the book early while stores still have it in stock. This is a very popular story. For the second selection, students are able to choose an appropriate 5 th grade Newbery or Caldecott Medal literary selection. They are to read the selection and complete the project idea from below to present that first week of school. This project is due by the 2 nd day of school. Using a shoebox, make a diorama of your favorite scene from the story. Attach a 4x6 note card to your diorama with the following information: o Title of book o Author/Illustrator Name o A brief summary of the story I am looking forward to having a wonderful school year. Happy Reading! If you have any questions over the summer feel free to email me at mkilby@icschoolweb.org Have a great summer! Ms. Kilby
