Create a travel brochure that would excite potential tourists to take a vacation to Rome. (Do this as if the culture is still thriving and around and you are the one stepping back into time. In other words, don t describe the ruins of the Coliseum, describe it in its glory gladiator events and all.) Take any Christmas carol and rewrite the lyrics to include information about a historical event. You must rewrite the entire song and it should rhyme. Include the lyrics to the original song as well. The information in the song must be complete and accurate. Side Dishes (Choose 1 --- 30 to 45 minutes to complete worth 10 ) Make an acrostic poem (vertical word where the first letter of each line spells a word and each line gives details and helps explain the chosen word) for the phrase Ancient Rome. Create an advertisement for a technological advancement (cultural achievement) in history. This should be a onepage ad that could appear in a newspaper or magazine. Create a top ten list of contributions and achievements from the ancient Roman civilization. Desserts (Choose 1 ---- 20 to 30 minutes to complete Worth 5 points) Write the epitaph (a summary statement of commemoration for a dead person) like you'd find on a gravestone for a person from this unit. Create a wanted/hero poster for a figure from Ancient Rome. If you consider the person to be a villain you will create a wanted poster. If you think the person was good you create a Hero poster. Newspaper Entrees (Choose 1 --- 60 to 90 minutes to complete worth 20 points) Your task: Create a newspaper about ancient Rome consisting of articles, comic strips, advertisements, and editorials. Instructions 1. Give your paper a title that fits with the unit. History newspaper is not enough. 2. Your paper should include 5 items including: a. 2 news articles about events from the unit. These should be written from the point of view of a reporter who witnessed these events and was in the middle of the action. These articles should be a minimum of two paragraphs and should include made-up quotes form people involved in the event. b. 1 obituary of a famous person form this period. An obituary is a short retelling of the major events in a person s life that has died. c. 1 picture (hand drawn) that goes along with one of your front-page stories. d. 1 other item such as: i. Comic strips about either a person or event form the time period. Each comic - strip should be at least 3 panels in length. ii. Advertisements form a company that might have existed at the time. iii. Puzzles about the time periods such as a crossword, jumble, or word search iv. Sports report about a sport played in this period v. Horoscopes vi. Advice column 3. The front page design a front cover for your paper that includes the paper s title, a picture and a table of contents which tells the page that the parts are on. Turn a blank sheet of computer paper sideways and fold it into thirds. 2. Unfold it and number the sections on the back from left to right 5, 6, 1. I know it seems wrong right now, but in the end it will be right. 3. Flip it over and number the sections on the front again from left to right 2, 3, and 4. Now complete each section as follows: Section 1: Write the name of the location (example: Exciting Rome ) and draw a picture of the location. Section 2: Write the word History and briefly describe the important events of this culture s past. Draw a map of the location. Section 3: At the top of the section write the name of a specific site in this culture that every vacationer has to see. Side Dishes (Choose 1 --- 30 to 45 minutes to complete worth 10 ) Acrostic Poem Your Task: Use your notes and the textbook to create an acrostic poem for the term ANCIENT ROME. An Acrostic Poem is a poem where the first letter of each line spells a word and each line gives details and helps explain the chosen word. Example 1: Poems should show Originality, Explain something from the unit, and Make Sense Example 2: How do we learn about the past Investigating ancient ruins, Studying artifacts, Translating foreign languages, Observing human behavior, and Reading primary sources, but we can t time travel Yet. Top Ten List Your Task: Create a top ten list of contributions and achievements from the ancient Roman civilization. Instructions: 1. Create a list of 10 achievements, people, inventions, events, and/or ideas from a civilization. 2. Rewrite your list in order of importance with your top item being the most important down to ten being the least important. 3. For each item write one sentence explain why you ranked it where you did. (that would be 10 total sentences.) These can either be part of your ranking list or in a separate section at the bottom of your list. Each item on the list is worth 1 point. Wanted/ Hero Poster Your task: Create a wanted/hero poster for a figure from Ancient Rome that we have studied. If you consider the person to be a villain you will create a wanted poster. If you think the person was good you create a Hero poster. Your poster must include: 1. A sketch of what the person probably looks like (or print a picture). 1pt 2. A reward amount (it must be in the currency of that civilization and in parentheses tell how much that is in US dollars) 1pt 3. List the specific crime or heroic action the person did. (Example: Wanted for being a menace to society. ) 1pt 4. A made up quote from a person living at the time showing what people might have said about this person. 1pt 5.
