PRODUCT PROGRAMMING Midian s TVS-2-TAIT and VPU-15-TAIT are programmed via Midian s KL-4 programming cable or using Tait s TOPA-EA-007G. Please reference the KL-4 manual for setup instructions of the KL-4 hardware. Go to our website midians.com and under downloads> software download the latest MPS software version. If using the supplied CD-ROM insert it into the PC s CD-ROM drive. In the browser that will pop-up, install the MPS programming software. Be certain that the Install KL-4 USB Driver box is checked during the installation process. Open Windows Control Panel and go to Device Manager. Open Ports (COM& LPT) to identify the port assignment issued by computer. Plug in the KL4 programmer to the USB port and the screen will flash and show the device location. From the product selection screen on the programming software, select the appropriate product from the list and click OK. Set the parameters of the TVS-2-TAIT / VPU-15-TAIT software to fit the application. If any clarifications on a feature are required, move the mouse cursor over the feature name until the question mark appears and right click, a definition of the feature will be shown. After the latest MPS has been installed default programming files for specific radio models can be found at: C:\Apps\Midian\MPS\MPS_vX_xx\Additional Default Files\ \TVS-2_VPU-15\Tait Set the parameters of the scrambler software to fit the application. If any clarifications on a feature are required, move the mouse cursor over the feature name until the question mark appears and right click, a definition of the feature will be shown. After entering the parameters, save the file by going to File - Save As. Enter the file name in the File Name block and click Save. Saving the file will allow for quick and easy reprogramming of units. Tait Orca Portable Programming: KL-4 Programming: After plugging the board into the radio, but with the radio still open, connect the black lead of the KL-4 to a common ground and the green clip lead to the Program In hole (P11). Turn power on to the radio and click Program Unit in the MPS software. KL-4 Reading: It will be necessary to connect the yellow clip lead to the Program Out pad (link 5 right pad), in addition to having the green clip lead connected to the Program In hole (P11). Follow the same procedure to read the unit as for programming, but select Read Unit in the menu bar. It is necessary to cycle power after programming or reading. Note: When the scrambler is read, the security codes will be read out as zeroes. If another scrambler is then cloned with this information, the scramblers will be incompatible because they have different security codes. TOPA-EA-007G Programming: This enables the scrambler to be programmed through the radio s accessory connector. Plug the TOPA-EA-007G cable into the KL-4 s RJ-11, P10 connector. Connect the TOPA-EA-007G to the accessory connector of the radio. Turn power on to the radio and click Program Unit in the MPS software. Note: The read function is not available when using the TOPA-EA-007G, as well as programming tones. 9

Tait TM-8000 Series Mobile Programming: KL-4 Programming: Connect the black lead of the KL-4 to a common ground and the green clip lead to pin 6 of the DB15 (HD). Turn power on to the radio and click Program Unit in the MPS software. The only indication that the TVS-2 was programmed successfully will be listening for the beeps from the TVS-2 in the radio speaker. The squelch circuit must be open to hear the beeps the TVS-2 generates. This can be accomplished two ways, press and hold the monitor/squelch override button or send a fully quieting signal with no modulation using a communication system analyzer. With the squelch open press program unit and after the program is sent you will hear several beeps in the speaker if programmed successfully. KL-4 Reading: It will be necessary to connect the yellow clip lead to pin 7 of the DB15 (HD), in addition to having the green clip lead connected to pin 6 of the DB15 (HD). 219-03026-0X Programming: The scrambler may be programmed through the radio using the TM-8000 Encryption Direct Programming Cable (219-03026-0X) available from Tait. Plug the cable into the DB-9 connector on the EIM. Turn power on to the radio and click Program Unit or Read Unit in the MPS software. Tait Orca Portables: Display Radios: OPERATION Mode Select: Press the Function Key (1, 2, or 3) that was assigned to this function (short or long press). When the scrambler is on SC will be indicated on the screen as well as the symbol. Code Select: Press the Function Key (1, 2, or 3) that was assigned to this function (short or long press). Then enter 1, 2, 3, or 4 on the keypad for the desired code followed by pressing the green Menu/Enter button. The display will show SC01 for instance when the scramble is on with code 1 selected. If the scrambler is off it would show 01. Non-Display Radios: Mode Select: Press the Function Key (1 or 2) that was assigned to this function (short or long press). The LED indicates Encryption On/Off status. Code Select: Code select is not available in this radio. Tait TM-8000 Mobiles: Mode Select: Press and release the key that was assigned to this function in the radio programming (F1, F2, F3 or F4). F1 is only available as a latched condition. F2, F3 and F4 can be momentary or latched. Code Select: Pressing and holding the mode select key will step the scrambler through the multiple keys if programmed. A number of beeps will be heard that correspond to the code (i.e. 2 beeps for code 2). Code select is only available when using F2, F3, or F4 as momentary. 10

TECHNICAL NOTES Radio Compatibility: Midian has taken the utmost care to ensure the option board integrates into the radio with minimal impact to the features of the radio. However, some features may not be available in the radio when an option board is used. If a feature is not available, please contact Midian to see if the feature can be added. Known Issues: Tones: Tones such as the Go-Ahead Beep, programming tones, etc. are not heard in the Orca radio. Multi-Code: If using multiple codes in the TVS-2-TAIT or VPU-15-TAIT and other Midian TVS-2 or VPU-15 Series scramblers are being used in other types of radios, it should be noted that in the TVS-2-TAIT and VPU-15-TAIT the binary is reversed. This means that code 4 in the TVS-2-TAIT or VPU-15-TAIT would equate to code 1 in a regular TVS-2 or VPU-15 scrambler.
