Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 14 151 Watertown Street PO Box 11 Watertown, MA 02471 (617) 926-3315 Leo Falter lcfalter@hotmail.com OCTOBER 2010 NEWSLETTER AOH President s Message Welcome to Fall! It was a really fast summer with everything that was going on. So there are kind of a lot of updates for this bulletin. See all the details below. Omagh Thunder visit: Every once in a while an opportunity comes along to show ourselves why we are Hibernians. That was exactly what the visit from the Omagh Thunder this summer was all about. The visit was a highlight of my Presidency of Div. 14. I was so proud of the men and women of our local divisions who helped make the boys visit so special. The national and state boards organized the trip and helped with some of the expenses; but the divisions made it happen. Our monetary contribution from the division was on the light side; but more than one brother and sister gave a donation to help defray the costs. I want to personally thank them and a certain couple who went far and above with their help. A lot of people helped with the different events and they need to be thanked also. I want to name a few because they donated a lot of their time. Dick Thompson Sr. drove the kids everywhere. Allan Gallagher made it possible for the kids to have a great cook out and fun night in the pool gym and game room at the Boys and Girls club. Coach Paul Connolly worked the boys out in the gym with a clinic and a game. I don t think they will forget Coach Paul or his knowledge. For the sake of not going on and on I want to thank all the helpers, cooks, DJ s, drivers, volunteers, and donors. The boys were a good bunch. They were well behaved and had great fun in the gym and the pool. So we all could see how much they enjoyed themselves. We made some new friends in Head Coach Eamon Daly and his assistants, Arden Bradley, Connor McElroy, and Chris Grimes. They watched over the team and made sure they had a great visit. Every time we did something for them they thanked us and shook our hands, as real gentlemen. Having these boys here and the special time that we gave them, makes 2

(continued) me understand why we keep this great organization going. It fortifies that all our brothers and sisters should realize how special it is to volunteer your time and see what a difference you can make. It feels great! Cincinnati Convention Update: Business-wise it was a pretty quiet year at the convention. So we had a bit more free time than usual. After the business days concluded, we were looking for some place to go. We saw the HeadFrist Sports Bar by the Paul Brown Football stadium. This looked like a good spot for us to watch the soccer game. Once inside, we were warmly accepted into the HeadFrist Sports Bar family. Gary the owner was very friendly and accommodated us by not only making sure he had our brand of refreshments; but opening the kitchen on Saturday (usually closed) to provide us with a delicious pork roast dinner. Our meals were super! They did not even mind that they had planned to paint the kitchen that day; but held off until they could cook up a great dinner for us. The bar patrons were friendly and got a kick out of our funny accents. My response to them was I don t remember my history books telling me the Pilgrims sailed up the Ohio River and settling in Cincinnati. So we had a bit more history on them. We had great bartenders that served us generously Michelle, Michelle, Kristan, Murph, Megan and Peggy. They kept them cold and coming.thank-you. Finding the HeadFrist Sports Bar was a great find on our part. When you go there ask Gary for a Small Pint and say Hi to Jim. Thanks to the staff we will remember the HeadFrist and Cincinnati fondly. We said our Good-byes and left them with an Irish Flag signed by all their friends from Div. 14 Watertown. So a true experience of our motto of friendship! Calendars: We will be selling the calendars this year again. I ask all brothers to at least buy one but also to try to sell one or more. We will offer a prize to whoever sells the most. This is very important to the division we count on this money to fund our charities thru the year. Please don t rely on others do your part the calendars will be available at the October meeting Thursday 10/14/10. Thank you. ~Leo 3

LAOH President s Message It was great to see everyone back from our summer break. We are already quickly diving into the business at hand this fall, so I think we will have a number of great activities for everyone. I would like to remind everyone that the date for October s meeting has been changed to Tuesday, Oct. 12th at 7:00 pm. (Please note for October we will be meeting on a Tuesday night due to the Columbus Day holiday. Also the meeting will start at 7:00 pm as Fr. Bob from St Patrick's will be celebrating Mass.) After mass we will have our regular meeting and annual Baby Shower for our charities. Donations of clothes (up to 12 months), diapers, baby toys, etc are welcome. We are asking everyone to bring in a new, unwrapped gift for a new baby. If you do not have time to shop, please don t worry, Heidi has been shopping for items all summer, so she has a large selection of items all ready and will accept any cash donations towards these purchases. Please bring all donations to the October meeting. I look forward to seeing everyone at the October meeting. ~Maureen 4

INFORMATION AND UPDATES Tailgate Parties Are you ready for some football? We invite everyone down to the lounge for free food and raffles on game day. Bring some friends and enjoy a relaxing day of fun and football. See the enclosed ad for dates. E-mail Addresses Needed From All Members We are trying to set up an e-mail distribution list to cut down the bulletin expenses. Please send your e-mail to AOHDIV14PRES@GMAIL.COM. Some brothers and sister are already receiving the bulletin via e-mail and they get this news so much faster than those receiving the postal mail. We have heard from so many of you that e-mail is such a great communication vehicle. So we look forward to hearing from you soon. Dues: Thank you to members that have sent in their dues. If you have not sent in your dues yet, please do so immediately. Dues can be paid at the club or mailed to P.O. Box 11, Watertown, MA 02471-0011. Please also address to AOH or LAOH on the mailing address. 5
