Andrew D. Keller Young Artist Competition 2017-2018 Announcement: JULY 2017 To: Young instrumental musicians, music teachers, parents, and accompanists - The 2016-2017 LSO season has been exciting for the symphony. We celebrated our 50th season and have a new conductor/music director, Dr. Elliot Moore. We made accommodations in our 2016-2017 season calendar for these events. Now we begin the new season with the announcement of the annual LSO Andrew D. Keller Young Artist Competition. This is an opportunity for young musicians, 1st through the 12th grade, to gain a unique positive experience in a competition situation. In addition to monetary prizes, one (or more) winner may be selected to perform with the Longmont Symphony Orchestra. THE CHOSEN WINNER(S) MUST BE AVAILABLE FOR REHEARSALS AND PERFORMANCE. For fairness and to encourage participation, the rules are stabilized and explicit. Refer especially to section 2.0, which describes eligibility. Please read rules carefully, and if you have any questions, please contact me at the number below and leave a message. The performance date will be at the LSO Family Concert: Saturday afternoon 4 PM, January 27, 2018. There is a non-refundable $20 entry fee per person per audition. There are a couple of changes to the rules and entry form: please take time to read them thoroughly. Please copy these materials and make them available to other young musicians who may be eligible for the competition. Information and forms may also be found on our website: longmontsymphony.org Key dates: The deadline for receipt of application is THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 2017. The competition will be held SATURDAY, DECEMBER 9, 2017. Family Concert will be SATURDAY, JANUARY 27, 2018. Best Regards, Barbara Merrell, Chairman, Andrew D. Keller Young Artist Competition Committee 416 Sterling Lane, Dacono, Colorado 80514 303-833-8939 (leave message) bmerrellfeydlr@gmail.com Attachments: Rules (2 pages) Application form (2 pages)

3.0 Judging 3.1 Two or more qualified judges will be recruited. 4.0 Competition Criteria 4.1 Instrumentalists must perform, by memory, one movement or section of a concerto or other form for which orchestral accompaniment is readily available. 4.3 Each competitor must submit a CD-R [format in audio CD file only - do not use mp3, mp4 or other format) - of the competition piece with accompaniment as described on the Application Form. Entire audition must be on ONE track. Please use a new CD, not previous used even through erased/deleted. When saving to CD, please verify that you have clicked AUDIO CD in the formatting information, otherwise it could default to a different format. If you do not have access to this recording medium, contact Ms. Merrell (303-833-8939 - leave message) to discuss alternatives. The LSOs Music Director will audition each recorded competition performance and select finalists for the live competition. Accompanists: All auditions must contain both the soloist(s) and the accompaniment to be considered. Please make arrangements with your accompanist to avoid last minute recordings or recordings without accompanist. Duets: each person must submit entry form and the $20 entry fee, but the recording must be on one CD, and the entry forms and $20 entry fees must also all be in the same envelope. 4.4 For the live competition, the repertoire must be the same as submitted on the recording. It is suggested that the audition performance be about 10 minutes long, and not to exceed 12 minutes. Shorter performances are acceptable, if full pieces or movements. Contestants must furnish their own accompanist. 4.5 Tuttis may be shortened or eliminated on the recording and at the competition to limit the work to about 10 minutes. Note that if selected for concert performance, the work must be uncut. 4.6 The live competition will be held Saturday, DECEMBER 9, 2017, at Longs Peak United Methodist Church, Longmont. Approximate time for appearance will be provided a week before the competition. 4.7 Note for piano contestants: Those selected for live competition may be offered the opportunity to practice on the piano at the Longs Peak United Methodist Church during times to be specified. Details will be provided. 4.8 Competitors in each category must compete with their competitors during the category times to be eligible for an award. Students who cannot compete with their category may be offered the opportunity to play for comments, but will not be eligible for an award. Key Points: Please note Eligibility rules, section 2.0 regarding place of residence. Deadline for receipt of entry: THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 2017. For guidance about music for competition, see your music teacher. There is an non-refundable entry fee of $20 per person.
