How To Get The Most Out Of This Book Congratulations for taking the plunge into learning to play piano! If you follow the book closely, listen to the musical examples and play everything in the book, you will soon be the kind of pianist that you hoped you would be. It's not difficult to do if you take the time to practice on a regular basis, go slowly, and allow yourself to make mistakes. Some guidelines to help you make your learning experience a success: 1. Print out just one chapter at a time. This makes it easier to focus on what you are working on, and complete all of the examples before moving on. 2. Move on to the next chapter when you can play everything comfortably. You don't have to play the examples at the same tempo as on the audio files, but do feel comfortable playing them at a steady, even pace. Try to play each example at least 3 times per day. 3. Reserve a good time in your daily schedule for piano practice. Setting aside a particular time for piano makes it more likely you will practice on a daily basis. Plan on practicing at least a half hour per day. Try to practice at least 3 to 5 times per week, but remember that the more you practice, the faster you get to be the pianist you want to be. 4. Go slowly. It is much more important to play the music correctly at a steady, even tempo than to play quickly. Playing quickly will come in time. 5. Count out loud. You'll know more about what this means as you get into the book. This is where most people fail at learning music. Many people think "I'll just count in my head," but what really happens is that you quickly forget about counting, and the steady tempo, note values and the pace of learning all suffer. Counting out loud helps you focus on the music, keep steady time and learn the music faster! 6. Make your own pace. Find what works best for you, but stick with it on a steady, regular basis. 7. Review earlier chapters occasionally. When you go back and play the examples from the earlier chapters, you'll find that the pieces you originally struggled with are much easier to play. You'll prove to yourself that you are indeed learning to play the piano! 8. Play the pieces in the Supplemental Repertoire Book. Play the pieces that go with the chapter you are working on, or when you have completed the chapter. This gives you more music to play and enjoy, and reinforces the material covered. 9. Print and keep this page on or by your piano. It can serve as a reminder of how to make the most of your piano practice. 10. Have fun and reward yourself when you have completed chapters, or simply learned to play a piece of music! Music is about enjoyment! - 6 -
