NOTES TO THE CONDUCTOR Strollin ith Sammy is my triute to the great Sammy Nestico hose signature style and sound, in my opinion, has ecome a enchmark against hich all other sing charts are measured. I ve tried to capture the same easygoing approach and natural progressions that make Sammy s music so much un to play and listen to. Synonymous ith Sammy Nestico is the Count Basie Orchestra and the great history they have together, the most amous o hich is the recording Basie Straight Ahead. I eel that every student o jazz, young or old, needs to e extensively amiliar ith this recording since it is one o the most accessile examples o hat ig and sing and style is all aout. Simply put, this recording demonstrates ho to play ig and sing. You can listen to the demo recording o this chart at alred.com/donloads. One o the asic stylistic components o the sing is laying ack and singing the eighth notes. While this should e done throughout the chart, there are e places here it can e over-emphasized to good eect. or example: in measure 13, all three eighth notes can e given more eight and delayed just a touch. Measure 22, eginning on the and o eat 3, the entire horn section can e more delierate ith the three eighth notes, and a slight scoop into the and o ould also e appropriate. This does not apply to the rhythm section as they should continue to play steady and consistent time. Another major component o this style is to alays keep the energy moving through the longer notes and to give the notes ull value. This is essential to the success o measures 12, 16 (saxes hal note), 20 (hal note), 22 2, 28, 5, 60, 68 and 80. Applying this same principal to your other sing charts ill add ne lie to them as ell and it ill make the and sound polished and more proessional. It s important to convey, to oth the students as ell as the audience, the musical energy o the chart rom the very irst measure through the end o the piece. I that energy es in the rong places, so does the impact o the perormance. Again, listen to the Basie and or an example o ho to maintain energy and ocus. inally, dynamic contrast is undamental to the Basie style. The simplest o musical passages can e made intensely dramatic ith a change o dynamic levels. or Strollin ith Sammy, that means starting o at a moderately sot level, although ith a ell-supported sound, and making the most out o the crescendos and decrescendos, such as in measures 12, 23 and 27. Also, the direction o the musical line ill oer guidance. Typically, as the line moves up the sta, the volume level goes ith it and vice versa hen it moves donard. The more dynamic shading you can achieve ith your group, the more musical the perormance ill e, and that s hat it s all aout.
