WOODWINDS The Section Head is Carolyn Fumalle (778-265-1905 or cfu55@shaw.ca). The Section Head should be contacted for details of requirements for classes in this Section. Woodwinds Sessions are scheduled for April 28-30, 2019. Woodwinds will be part of a Highlights Concert on May 2, 2019 with Classical Guitar, Brass and Percussion, and Composition Sections. PLEASE NOTE For the purposes of awards, scholarships and candidacy in the Provincial Festival, the Adjudicators will keep private records. Performance in two solo classes is required in order to qualify for awards. Participants are advised to free their time in their sessions in order to avoid conflicting activities. The order set in the program will be altered only in an emergency situation. The Section Head cannot advise participants of their exact playing time. Modern symphonic or concert band instruments only. Exception: see Solo Baroque Instrument subsection and Traditional Instrument class Repertoire will appear on the adjudication sheets exactly as input by the registrant. Therefore, it is important that the spelling, punctuation and composer s name be as accurate as possible. Festival staff and Section Heads will not make any corrections to the repertoire as input by the registrant. Changes to repertoire are permitted only after consultation with the Section Head, however any change in repertoire cannot exceed the original performance time. Please number the first bar of each line in the copy for the adjudicators. PROVINCIAL AND NATIONAL RECOMMENDATIONS Participants must enter at least two solo classes in order to be eligible for recommendation to the Provincial Festival. The Adjudicator will consider number of classes entered, display of knowledge of various styles of music, and standard of accomplishment when making recommendations. The Provincial Festival has changed the upper age limit to enter at the Senior level to 23 and under. This means if you are 24 or older you WILL NOT qualify for Provincials in the Senior level. Memorization is mandatory at the Provincial Festival for National level solo classes. Participants interested in a recommendation to the National solo class at the Provincial Festival must be prepared to perform two consecutive movements of a senior concerto or a complete concerted work. A concerto or a concerted work is defined as any composition originally written for solo instrument with orchestral accompaniment. Chamber s and Recommendation to the Provincial and National Festivals At the present time the Provincial Festival has only one Section for all ensembles. Local festivals can send two ensembles to each Provincial level: Junior, Intermediate and Senior, and one ensemble to the National level. The appropriate level is determined by the group s AVERAGE AGE but no player can be more than 28 years of age. The average age of Provincial Senior level ensembles must not exceed 23 years. Four instrumental Sections in the Festival offer classes for chamber ensembles. The following process allows adjudication of ensembles in their own discipline and also provides an opportunity for a playoff when more than two ensembles at the same level are eligible for recommendation to the Provincial Festival. Procedure: 1. s will be adjudicated by specialists in their own discipline. 2. s who meet Provincial criteria will be informed by the Section Head. 3. When ensembles at the same level and from different disciplines wish to proceed to the Provincial Festival, the GVPAF will arrange a playoff. 4. Adjudicators for a playoff will be musicians, such as orchestra conductors, with knowledge of and experience in working with all orchestral instruments. ~ 1 ~

AGE CATEGORIES FOR WOODWIND CLASSES Participants may register in classes for higher age groups, keeping in mind paragraph 5 under Festival Rules which states participants may enter only one category. Junior - 14 years and under Intermediate - 17 years and under Senior - 28 years and under (Note: The Provincial Festival has changed the upper age limit to enter at the Senior level to 23 and under. This means if you are 24 or older you WILL NOT qualify for Provincials in the Senior level.) Adult - over 28 years Participants older than 28 years should consider entering the Adult classes. Participants will not be eligible to be sent to the Provincial or National Festivals nor for awards. ~ 2 ~
