Volume 23, Issue 4 April 2017 Author Lori Rader-Day at Library April 15 Award-winning author Lori Rader-Day will bring to us her story of writing The Day I Died, her third thriller. Plan to join us from 2-3:00 on Saturday, April 15, to hear from a former Boone County resident who is now president of Mystery Writers of America Midwest Chapter. Lamb cake and other refreshments will be served. Lori's novels are set in Indiana or feature characters from Indiana living elsewhere in the Midwest. These are truly Midwestern novels. Lori puts Hoosier characters on the page who are active agents of their own fates or they become that way over the course of the book, forced by circumstances beyond their control to fight off Midwestern stoicism, muster their courage, and save the day. In Lori's Anthony Award-winning debut The Black Hour, two Indiana-born characters brush the chips off their shoulders to stop a stealthy campus killer. That book also won the Lovey Award for Best First Novel, the Killer Nashville Silver Falchion for Best First Novel/Mystery & Thriller, and the Illinois Woman's Press Association Mate E. Palmer Award in Communications for Fiction and was nominated for the Simon & Schuster Mary Higgins Clark Award, the Macavity Award for Best First Novel, the Barry Award for Best Paperback Original, and the Left Coast Rosebud for Best First Novel. In her Mary Higgins Clark Award-winning second novel, Little Pretty Things, the setting is rural Indiana, where a young woman fights off stifled dreams and a dreary present to fight ghosts of the past and a murderer getting away with decades of crimes. That book was also nominated for the Anthony Award for Best Paperback Original. Lori's newest novel, The Day I Died, commences in another small town in Indiana, where a woman running from a brutal past will help solve a local murder/kidnapping. It is being released widely by William Morrow Paperbacks on April 11, 2017. Plan to enjoy a lively afternoon at the library and feel free to borrow her first two books so that you may ask questions after Lori s talk.
PAGE 2 Spring Coloring Contest There is still plenty of time to participate in the library-wide Spring Coloring Contest. In the Youth Department there are contests for three different age groups: 4-6 years old, 7-9 years old, and 10-12 years old. There are three different Easter egg designs to choose from for these age groups. There is also a contest for the teens, age 12-18, with two Easter egg designs to choose from. Teens may choose to enter the adult contest if they want a more challenging coloring sheet. The adults are challenged to color an intricate spring design. The contest ends April 15. Prizes will be awarded to winners in each age group; winners will be contacted by April 21. Grab your markers, sharpen your pencils and crayons, and stop by the library for your coloring sheet! The Undertaker s Daughter The Undertaker s Daughter by Kate Mayfield has been selected as the April book discussion title. This memoir is both a recollection of life in the funeral home as well as a young girl s coming-of-age in the segregated South. How does one live in a house of the dead? Kate Mayfield explores what it meant to be the daughter of a small-town undertaker in this fascinating memoir evocative of Six Feet Under and The Help, with a hint of Mary Roach s Stiff (Amazon). Book discussion will meet on Monday, April 10 at 1:30 p.m. in the library s young adult room; meetings usually last an hour. Light refreshments will be available. There are several copies of the book available - we hope you ll join us! April Writers Group Spring has sprung! The suggested topic for our April Writers Group is Easter Memories; however, writers may write and share on any topic they desire. Please join us Thursday, April 20 at 6:30 p.m. in the library meeting rooms. All ages are invited; light refreshments will be served. ReferenceUSA Demonstration The library now offers access to ReferenceUSA, the premier online research and reference tool for area business professionals, job seekers, and students. To access ReferenceUSA, visit the library website (http://thorntownpl.org) and click Our Services at the top of the screen. The software is available now, and the library will host a free demonstration of this database on Tuesday, April 4 from 2-3 p.m.
PAGE 3 Family Genealogy Class The next Genealogy Program will be Thursday, April 6 at 7 p.m. in the computer lab. Since students are on Spring Break this week we will host a Genealogy Family Program. There will be beginner family trees for children to work on and professional pedigree charts for adults. We ll also discuss an assortment of online tools at a variety of levels. For more information please call the library. Family Game Night April 22 We had so much fun the first time, we just had to do it again! Drop by the library from 4-8 p.m. on Saturday, April 22, for a fun-filled Family Game Night. We ll have several games available for all interests and ability levels, including Shut the Box, Left Center Right, Apples to Apples, Scattergories, Balderdash, Candy Land, Yahtzee, and Happy Salmon. Don t know how to play? We can teach you! We ll also have other card, dice, and board games available. The program is open to adults, teens, and families. Water and snacks will be provided; participants may bring their own beverages, preferably in bottles or travel cups. Enter at the east entrance; this program will meet after-hours in the meeting rooms and youth department of the library. You may drop in for a few hours or spend the whole evening with us. No registration is required, but those interested may contact the library so that we may have sufficient snacks for the evening! Tidy Up Your Shelves! From Marie Kondo s book The Life-changing Magic of Tidying Up: the Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing come the following suggestions for how to thin out your book collection. She recommends removing every book from your shelves and putting them all on the floor. ALL of them. You cannot judge whether or not a book really grabs you when it s still on the shelf. You divide them into four categories: general (books you read for pleasure), practical (references, cookbooks, etc.), visual (photograph collections, etc.), and magazines. Then take them in your hand one by one and decide whether to keep or discard each one. The criterion is whether or not it gives you a thrill of pleasure when you touch it. The key word is touch. Do not start reading the book, as this clouds your judgment. Although the most common reason for not discarding a book is I might read it again, when you take a moment to count, you will find very few books that you have read more than once. The author has many other suggestions on sorting papers, clothing, and more. Kondo s book is located in adult non-fiction under 648 KON. The library is happy to receive your clean used books that no longer need to be on your shelves. Any that are not needed in our collection will be made available to others in our May 9-16 book sale.

PAGE 7 Museum Easter Party On Saturday, April 8 from 2-3 p.m. the Thorntown Heritage Museum will host a Hip-Hop-Hooray Easter Party! Grab your peeps and follow the bunny trail through our Military, Native American, Music, and Church History Rooms. We ll have refreshments, an Easter egg game, crafts, activities, and a treasure chest full of prizes. Everyone is invited to this free program. Hope you can join us! Bingo at the Library Did you know? On the second Thursday of each month, Hickory Creek at Lebanon hosts a free bingo game for seniors at the library. CICOA lunch is served at 11:30 a.m., and bingo begins at 12:30 p.m. in library meeting rooms. No registration is required, and there are prizes and treats galore! Make an afternoon of it by booking a CICOA luncheon at least 24 hours in advance, or just stop in at 12:30 for fun, games, and prizes! Next bingo game: April 13. See you there! Sally Perkins, Storyteller - Mark Your Calendars! Sally Perkins will be our special guest at the May 9 Friends of Thorntown Public Library Annual Meeting. At 7:00 p.m., Sally will take you through her storytelling process, beginning with the decision to accept a commission. Sally s process is intense and includes research, more research, interviews, more interviews, and weaving multiple vignettes into a cohesive story. Sally tells stories of all sorts (folk tales, wisdom tales, ghoulish tales, personal tales, and historical tales) to audiences of all ages. She has been commissioned by Indiana Landmarks, Storytelling Arts of Indiana, and the Indiana Historical Society to create stories about historical figures and spaces in Indiana. Sally s library visit will feature vignettes from her 2016 story Keeping Hinkle, Hinkle and will appeal to basketball fans, architecture buffs, historians, writers, actors, and those who enjoy edge-of-your-seat tales.
