Outline of the course Unit 1: Introduction Composition techniques / Forms and structures / Developing melodies. Popular music A study of popular music from 1960 to present day, producing a Pop music composition for coursework. Unit 2: Film music Study of a variety of film scores with an understanding of effects and processes employed by composers. Produce a Film music composition for coursework. Unit 3: Music for Special Events A study of music composed for special events and processes employed by composers to create appropriate effects. Produce a composition to match the requirements of a particular event or occasion. Unit 4:Orchestral Landmarks A Study of the development of the orchestra across three centuries. Produce a composition using the given criteria. Unit 5: Dance music Study a variety of forms and styles of social dance music. Produce a composition from one of the given dance music styles. Final submission for composition tapes with, scores and written evaluations. Two compositions one is based on Music for a Special event and the other an Integrated Assignment set by the AQA examination board. Unit 6:Assessment / Revision To include revision of the five areas of study Pop music / Film music / Music for special events / Orchestral Landmarks / Dance music Final assessments Term 2 Year 11 Year 10 & 11 GCSE Music National Curriculum Pupils will be following the AQA (Assessment and Qualifications Alliance Board) syllabus for Music (3271), which meet the requirements of the Programmes of Study for Key Stage 4. Aims To: build on skills learned in Key Stage 3. To develop an understanding and appreciation of a range of different kinds of music. To extend their own interests and increase their ability to make judgements about musical quality. To acquire the knowledge, skills & understanding needed to make music both individually and in groups. Homework There is one Music homework per week, this will either be a set exercise, practice on pupils chosen instrument or coursework. Pupils should ensure that homework is written in the planner, completed and handed in on the due date. GCSE Music Club Is held on a Wednesday lunchtime from 1.20 1.50 and gives pupils the opportunity to work with support on ongoing composition coursework, homework, or practice on their chosen instrument Coursework Deadlines Individual teachers will set Coursework deadlines. Pupils are expected to meet deadlines. Any pupil not meeting their deadlines for coursework may be putting their GCSEs at risk. Teachers will inform parents if coursework deadlines are not met. Parental Involvement Parents can support pupils and the department by taking an interest in what is being studied, and giving active and positive encouragement. Please check that homework and coursework is being completed and handed in on time.
However the final formal assessment will take place in Term 2 of year 11 and coursework will be given the GCSE grades as per the AQA mark scheme.
